Desperation is a Stinky Cologne: Extreme Sleepers for Week 4 2008

In a bind? This column is for those of you who, due to injury or just plain poor team management, find yourselves with a gaping hole at QB, RB or WR. It’s crunch time – let’s head to the free agent pool and see what we can dig up! There’s gotta be a few diamonds in the rough who might be able to help us out this week.

Remember, this differs from a standard “waiver wire” post in that I’m not advising you to pick these players up if you’re seeking long-term production. Thanks to matchups, injuries, or other favorable conditions, these normally ignorable guys might just be useful this week if you really need them, but in most cases aren’t worth a long-term roster spot.

Last week, I predicted that you might be able to get useful production out of the following players. Let’s see how we did: (More …)

Studs and Duds – Week 4: Back in the swing of things

Before I go into this week’s “studs” and “duds”, I must apologize for not getting a post up last week. I was en route to San Antonio to meet my girlfriend’s family, so I didn’t really have too much time to sneak off and blog (hopefully you understand!) Anyways, after a quick review of my week two picks though, it appears that I’m off to a pretty solid start this year. While the guy I mentioned in the title of the post, Ryan Grant, had a terrible game somehow (honestly…this was supposed to be a lock against a bad Detroit defense!), big games from Adrian Peterson, the Denver Connection (Cutler to Marshall), and a poor performance from Derek Anderson led the way as I ended up 15-4-3 (correct-incorrect-push). This brings my current season total to 28-11-9, leading me to believe that my picks have some iota of usefulness to them. So without further ado, here are my “stud” and “dud” picks for the upcoming weekend:

Earnest Graham, RB, TB: Although I recommended starting Clinton Portis and Maurice Jones-Drew over Graham in an Ask the Geeks segment this week, it wasn’t easy. Graham is going against one of the worst run defenses in the league this weekend, as the Packers are letting up a league worst 5.7 yards per carry (they’re also letting up over 150 yards a game on the ground.) Graham should get plenty of chances in this one as it will most likely be a pretty tight game the whole way.

Selvin Young, RB, DEN: Although Young has done nothing special to date, all I want to say is that he’s playing a Kansas City team that is allowing over 200 yards a game on the ground and is the second worst in the NFL in total rushing yards allowed this season with 612 through just three games! Ask the Geeks – Week 4: Bye week blues

Atg ButtonHere are some more questions for week four…and again the theme seems to be surviving a brutal bye week (Detroit, Indianapolis, Miami, New England, New York Giants, and Seattle.)

Jeanne asks: I have a lot of byes this week and quickly need to pick-up….who do you suggest?

Defense – Green Bay, Bills or Steelers
WR – Issac Bruce or Chansi Stuckey
TE – LJ Smith (may be hurt), Jerramy Stevens, Robert Royal

Brandon’s take: Hey Jeanne, welcome to the club (of people struggling with bye’s this week.) In terms of a team defense, I think you have to take the team that plays against the St. Louis Rams if they’re available…and just you’re luck, the Buffalo Bills are there for the taking. For a receiver pickup, I’m liking Stuckey these days, as he’s getting plenty of looks from Brett Favre (having a touchdown in each game so far this season doesn’t hurt either!) Bruce had a big week two, plus he had a touchdown last week, but the offense is too inconsistent and there’s no telling how he will do from week to week, even if it is against a week Saints defense. Finally, go with Rober Royal as your tight end, as he’s going against a Rams defense that is just as bad as their offense. (More …)

Yeah this is a tough one this week. I will probably end up with what you say too. But it is hard with Portis going up Dallas D.

Who should I start J. Delhomme or D. Anderson? I’m a long shot to win this week…and I was thinking take a chance on Anderson, he’s playing for his position against a very bad Defense…what do you think?

@chris: Although he’s been struggling, I have a feeling Derek Anderson will have a solid game this week. Take the risk on him.

@Bolt: In case you read this before the start of the games, I’m thinking you should go with Graham and MJD over Portis…it looks like Dallas is going to be focused on stopping the run.
