Ask the Geeks: Perplexed by the flex spot

Atg ButtonThis week in our Ask the Geeks post we take a look at the flex spot and who makes a good play:

Paul asks: Hey Guys a quick ? for you, just finished draft I took Josh Morgan (Flex) to go along with Colston, V. Jackson, R. Williams and S Moss. Jamaal Charles and Donald Brown are still available. Should I add one of those 2 running backs and ditch one of the receivers? Thanks for your help and advice. have a good season

    Blogger League team: FFGeekBlog.com

Yesterday was the live draft for The Hazean‘s Blogger League, which he’s hosted for the past few years and features many fantasy football bloggers from across the web. Unfortunately for team FFGeekBlog.com, I logged in about two minutes before the 8 PM start time, only to realize that Java needed to be updated on the laptop I was using! By the time I actually got into the draft room, Rams running back Steven Jackson had already been selected as my first pick (#4). At first I was a little discouraged by this pick, but as the other bloggers reminded me, this is a PPR and S-Jax should see all the work he can handle this season in both the running AND passing game (he had 90 receptions a few years ago!), so it should be alright. Anyways, here is the team I ended up with, along with the round I made the pick in parenthesis. (Note: The league plays a QB, RB, WR1, WR2, TE, WR/RB, K and DEF.)

    • QB Peyton Manning (2)
    • RB Steven Jackson (1)
    • WR Chad Ochocinco (3)
    • WR Eddie Royal (4)
    • TE Zach Miller (10)
    • RB/WR Felix Jones (5)
    • K Stephen Gostkowski (11)
    • DEF New York Giants (8)

Why did you take Peyton in the 2nd? I took Peyton in the 2nd, with the 14th overall pick — but only because I’m in a 2QB league. And even then, I felt like I was reaching for him a little. You’re optimistic about Peyton this year?

You’re right, I probably did reach a bit for Peyton and I might have been able to get him with my third round pick (7 picks later), but I feared that if I didn’t get him there, I wouldn’t get a top tier quarterback because I would have to wait for the draft to snake all the way back around to me for my 4th pick. Considering the league has less roster spots than I’m used to, I was aiming to get one of the top players in a few of the positions to make sure I put up decent numbers each week. I think that makes sense, hah.

Another reason was that this league is my third league (in level of importance to me), so I wanted to switch up my normal draft style, in which I hardly ever draft a top-tier quarterback, just to see how it works out for me.

To answer your original question though, I am pretty optimistic on Peyton this year and I think he’ll put up solid numbers, even without Marvin Harrison in town.
