Ask the Geeks: BYE Week Blues

Just as I promised, here are the Ask the Geek’s for week four. We’re still getting questions from people who are undefeated in their leagues, so that must mean our advice is at least helping some of you! Remember, you can send any additional inquiries you have to us here.

    Massie asks…

Ok, so due to bye week and injuries I have to drop a player on my bench to make space for a fill-in. Who do you think will have less value going forward? Anthony Gonzalez, Donald Brown, Lance Moore or Brian Westbrook??

Who should i start out of these 3 pick 2 for week 4?
      Cedric Benson vs. Cle
      Matt Forte vs. Det
      Steve Slaton vs. Oak

      • Brandon 11:31 am on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Benson and Forte, who have the easier match-ups.

    • TIm Foley 12:06 am on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

i was offered a trade for slaton.
      -roy williams – dallas
      -willie parker – pit
for slaton. what do you think?

      • Brandon 11:27 am on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’m not feelin’ that trade. I think it’s safe to say at this point that Roy Williams will not put up the numbers as the Cowboys WR1 that T.O. put up and Parker is on the decline. Stick with Steve Slaton.

    • Jones 3:33 am on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I dropped Reggie Bush for Tashard Choice. Bad move? I missed Coffee and Julius Jones on waivers and I’m very slim at RB this week. Gore, Westbrrok, Williams all out. At this point I have Lynch and Choice in. Not really much I can do I guess, just have to hope my WRs have big games.

      • Brandon 11:30 am on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

While Tashard Choice is the better play this week (over Reggie Bush), he could be pushed back into fantasy irrelevance once Marion Barber resumes his role as the starter and Felix Jones is back from his injury. I would have kept Bush, as he has a chance to put up decent fantasy as long as he’s healthy, whereas in Choice’s situation, it depends on the health of the other two tailbacks on the team. Good luck though!

      should i do this trade..

i give pierre thomas and antonio gates
i receive dallas clark and marshawn lynch

      • Brandon 1:03 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’m not sure I would do this trade. Do you plan on starting Marshawn Lynch or is he going to be your backup? I think the Bills like what they saw from Fred Jackson and Lynch will probably end up splitting carries when all is said and done. Pierre Thomas is the man in New Orleans as long as he’s healthy and he showed what kind of numbers he can put up last weekend with Drew Brees commanding the defenses attention. As for the Dallas Clark vs Antonio Gates comparison, I think their numbers will even out a bit more as the season progresses and you won’t want to get rid of Gates. In short, don’t do the trade.

        • rich 1:55 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Thanks for the input…marshawn would be my 3rd RB since my WRs are weak..not a PPR league..and my 1,2 and RBs are SJax and Slaton who have 0 TDs in 6 games between them..gates is also not performing now that vincent jackson seems to be rivers’ target.

Any idea if i should try to deal slaton?

        • Brandon 10:39 am on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Don’t deal Slaton now, as his value is WAY down. If you can start three running backs, I think you’re pretty solid with S-Jax, Slaton and the PT Cruiser.

      • Brandon 2:12 pm on October 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Glad you didn’t do the trade? 🙂

    • Matt M 1:21 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I have Barber and I recently picked up Choice. I only have 1 open RB slot, who should I start?

      • Brandon 1:27 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’d wait to make this decision till Sunday if possible, as you should know more about Barber’s health at that point. If he starts, he’s probably likely to get more carries than Choice and should have more value.

    • Steven 1:25 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I have Grant, McFadden, T. Jones and Moreno. Need to fill 2 RB slots. I was going to start McFadden and Grant. T. Jones has been disappointing and I am not sure about Moreno. Am I starting the best two?

      • Brandon 1:37 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Ryan Grant has the toughest match-up of the group, going against the Vikings, but I think you still want to start him as he’s the only one in the group that isn’t really splitting carries. Of the other three, go with Moreno, who has been playing better than the other two as of late.

Drew Brees against the Jets D or Eli manning against KC? I am torn.

      • Brandon 10:30 am on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

That’s a tough one, but I think I’d still stick with Drew Brees. The Jets secondary is beat up and it could mean that Brees can actually put up some solid numbers against an otherwise solid defense. Eli is a good play too, but I just can’t justify sitting Brees.

    • Steve 2:33 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

i have Donal Brown, Marshawn Lynch, Michael Bush, LT. Need to fill 2 RB slots.

      • Brandon 10:36 am on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Donald Brown and LT. With Darren Sproles struggling in the ground game, the Chargers will lean on Tomlinson to do most of the running on Sunday night as long as he stays healthy. As for Lynch, I’m worried about how much they’ll use him this weekend and with Bush, it’s hard for me to recommend anyone on the Raiders at this point.

    • Brett 2:57 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I have 2 RB slots, im starting maurice jones drew and westbrook has a bye and gore is out. Do i start marshawn lynch or should i pick up glen coffee, correl buckhalter, or tashard choice

      • Brandon 10:38 am on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Of that group, I like Glen Coffee the most as long as you don’t have to drop anyone too good to get him. Buckhalter continues to split carries with Knowshon Moreno and Choice will probably split carries with Marion Barber (plus he’s on my “miss” list!)

    • Rabbit 6:21 pm on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Can make up my mind on my WRs. I have Calvin Johnson, Devin Hester, mike sims-walker, and Steve smith(nyg). I can have three of thr four, who should, I bench? It may be of note one oF my RBs is matt forte.

      • Brandon 10:34 am on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Calvin “Megatron” Johnson has the worst match-up, but I don’t think you should bench him. I’d sit Mike Sims-Walker, who I’m still not 100% convinced on. If he does good again this week, then you might change your lineup in the future though.

    • Jones 2:35 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Mark Sanchez is available on waiver. I can drop Flacco and pick him up. Currently I have Rivers in my lineup. Take a gamble on Sanchez having a big day against NO or leave Rivers in and hold onto Flacco for upcoming value?

      • Brandon 4:39 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

No way, keep Flacco. He’s done nothing but put up solid fantasy numbers all year and it looks like he’s finally given the Ravens the passing game they’ve wanted. Keep Rivers as your starter and Flacco as your backup.

    • Ken 3:35 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I have a team in a four team league. My wr’s are randy moss, reggie wayne, vincent jackson and steve smith (nyg). I figure moss and wayne are no brainers, but Im torn between jackson and smith. Normally I’d take jackson in a heartbeat, but he’s up against pittsburgh while smith’s at KC.

You think I should play the matchup here and go with the rookie who’s on a hot streak, or should I stick with Vincent especially considering the chargers are probably going to have to throw a lot?

      • Ken 3:37 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

dont know why i said rookie there lol, but you get my point.

        • Brandon 4:42 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Stick with Vincent Jackson. He’s already put up big numbers against two solid pass defenses (Baltimore and Oakland) and should do the same this weekend. Nice group of receivers there though!

    • Shirley 3:56 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Tashard Choice is on the waiver wire. I have Ryan Grant and LenDale White starting this week as my RBs since LeSean McCoy & Michael Turner are on byes. I hate that Grant has to go up against the Vikings defense. I have 3 QBs on my team: Kurt Warner (bye), Matt Hasselbeck (injured) and Shaun Hill (added a few days ago due to first 2 QBs being out. Should I drop any of the previously mentioned players to grab Tashard Choice so that I can get more points from starting Choice than Grant? I’m 0-3 and need a lot of help.
My starting WRs this week are mostly #2 & #3 WRs with a Jets DST & Owen Daniels.
Thanks again for your help as always.

      • Brandon 4:37 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I think Tashard Choice would actually be a better play than LenDale White this week, so if you could get him I’d start Choice and Grant. However, I wouldn’t drop any of the players you’ve listed to get him. If you have an extra wide receiver or tight end or something, then you might consider picking him up, otherwise I’d just try to survive this week with what you have.

        • Shirley 5:13 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

My other WR is Roddy White. So I guess I better wish on a star tonight that LenDale has a big game tomorrow. Thanks, Brandon.

I need WR help this week. I can pick 3 out of the following 5 to start:

      1. M. Colston
      2. K. Walter
      3. B. Marshall
      4. W. Welker
      5. D. Hester

      What do you think?

      • Brandon 8:40 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I like all of those guys this week, but the three I’d go with are Colston, Marshall and Hester. Welker’s injury scares me and I’m guessing Walter doesn’t have two huge games in a row.

so I am in a tough spot this weekend against a great team with Brees. fml.
i am looking to maximize points.
i can start two: Brandon Marshall, Johnny Knox, or Derrick Mason who finally had a good game.
??? thanks for the advice keep up the good work

      • Brandon 8:51 pm on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Most weeks I’d recommend Derrick Mason over Johnny Knox, but the fact that he’s not 100% healthy AND he’s playing the Patriots, who have shut down opposing teams primary receivers this year, makes me lean towards Knox. Go with Marshall and Knox.

I have to win this week against my husband…or I’m gonna pay….Don’t have much depth at running back with the bye weeks…Who should I start for my #2….McFadden or Portis…I know both haven’t been good but they do have good matchups this week.

      • Brandon 12:25 am on October 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’d go with Darren McFadden. First of all, Portis is a game-time-decision, so there’s a chance he could screw you over by not even playing. Secondly though, he didn’t do anything impressive against St. Louis and Detroit, so there’s no saying if he’ll do anything against the Buc’s. Good luck!

I have Steve Slaton, Chris Johnson, Julius Jones and I got (Glen) Coffee 😀 which three do u recommend starting this week?

      • Brandon 10:26 am on October 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Chris Johnson is a must start this week. As for the other three, I’m leaning towards Coffee and Slaton, even though they all have decent match-ups this week.

Go with Harrison, who should have a decent game against the Bengals this week while Moreno splits carries.

Santonio Holmes. Welker is risky with his injury concerns, although they’ve announced he’d be active today, which is promising.

Offered Marshawn Lynch for Ryan Grant? Grant hasnt done much this year, but Cleveland he could put up some nice points.

I dont know who start this week Tom Brady or Josh Freeman. Tom is playing a high powered steelers defense, and Josh is playing the worst in the NFL panthers, Also should i start the Lions or Chiefs?

      • Brandon 11:46 am on November 14, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Actually, in terms of passing yards allowed, the Panthers are the 5th best in the league at 190 yards per game. The Steelers on the other hand are 9th worst, allowing 240 yards per game. Carolina has given up more touchdowns through the air, but I don’t think that’s reason enough to start Freeman over Brady. For defense, go with the Chiefs. Good luck!

Hits & Misses – Week 4: Cutler to the Rescue!

Here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week four, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) This week I didn’t even have to worry about skipping the most obvious choices, as most of the top ranked players have some pretty tough match-ups (Brees/Colston vs Jets, MJD vs Titans, Brady vs Ravens, Purple Jesus vs Packers, etc), so here is your unfiltered hits and misses for the week, starting with the Savior of Chicago… (More …)

        • Brandon 10:25 am on October 3, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Bradshaw, who should put up some decent numbers against the Chiefs. T-Jones is too risky at this point, as you’re basically just hoping he can get a goalline carry to get you some points.

    • Brian 3:38 pm on October 1, 2009 Permalink | Reply

How do you feel about Indy receivers Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon and Giants receivers Steve Smith and Mario Manningham. Both are facing what looks like weak defenses and should fare well. Would you pick these over Hester, Santana Moss and Sims-Walker as you recommended?

      • Brandon 3:49 pm on October 1, 2009 Permalink | Reply

First of all, I’m having trouble thinking of any situation where I would recommend benching a healthy Reggie Wayne. As for Garcon and the two Giants receivers, I like them (plus my “hits”) in this order:

        1) Steve Smith
        2) Santana Moss
        3) Devin Hester
        4) Mike Sims-Walker
        5) Mario Manningham
        6) Pierre Garcon

        • Brian 3:52 pm on October 1, 2009 Permalink | Reply

The league i’m in has only two receivers to chose. So I guess Wayne & Smith would get the start.

        • Brandon 4:19 pm on October 1, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah I’d go with those two. While Moss, Hester and Sims-Walker have good match-ups, they aren’t as consistent as Smith has been this year, as he’s obviously established himself as Eli’s go-to guy.

        • Brian 5:09 pm on October 1, 2009 Permalink | Reply

My starting RBs this week are Benson and Coffee. They both going up against a week defenses of the Browns and Rams respectively. I would have gone with Portis had he not been hurt – he could have gone for close to 150 with that Bucs defense.

        • Brandon 11:35 am on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Portis might end up playing, but I’d stick with Benson and Coffee, who also have great match-ups.

Ray Rice vs NE McFadden vs Houston who’s been horrible agianst the run, or Portis who has been hurting vs the Bucs?

      • Brandon 11:35 am on October 2, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Make sure to check Portis’ status on Sunday, but if he plays, he’s got a much better matchup then Ray Rice. If Portis is held out though, then it makes your decision pretty easy!

Whoa, do NOT drop Pierre Thomas! As for the others, Jackson probably has a little less value than Bradshaw in the long run, but both of them have more value then Glen Coffee once Frank Gore returns to action. If possible, you could drop Fred Jackson now, then when Gore comes back you pick him back up. Good luck!
