Seemed like a good day for defenses too with several scoring very well especially in the flea flicker standard format.

All Around a pretty well scoring week (especially for my teams). All signs point to a 14-2 week this week which is nice after my 6-9 record last week. I’ve got my money league by the balls as long as Leon Washington and Cotchery can combine for at least 3 points in a PPR and return yard league. I’ll get the $10 weekly high score prize if that happens too as my only competition is my opponent. To make things better the owner just added a $50 prize for second to bring the total prizes $870 plus a Titlecraft trophy! Hell of a free league if you ask me!

One of my Flea Flicker leagues has only 9 people so we all had stacked rosters. i was still surprised by this week though. Had Schaub, Turner, Rice, Fitz, White, Winslow and Eagles defense starting. The 6 offensive players combined for 13 TDs! Would have been better if I didn’t start Scobee…

You’re in a free league that offers $870 in prizes?!

        • Squish 4:56 pm on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, it’s a league sponsored by an insurance quote guy. There are tons of them on Yahoo. Apparently he’s making a killing this year from the quotes done by his leagues’ players. You can check them out here:

I’m just happy I was smart enough to trust the guy instead of running for the hills like most people do when they see “free prizes” at the top of a FF league.

Looking back you wonder if it’s even worth wasting a draft pick on DST unless you can grab maybe the likes of giants, vikings, steelers, ravens. It’s really just about match ups don’t you think? I just peruse the waiver each week for a decent one, and viola.

        • Brandon 11:20 am on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, with both Kickers and Defenses there isn’t much rhyme or reason to their scoring on any given week. While the best defenses should at least keep the score down, which helps you get points in that way, it’s hard to figure when a player will fumble and the other team takes it for a score (same with an interception.) All you can do is take your best shot at a match-up and hope it works out for you.

        • Squish 5:02 pm on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I agree. But honestly its even rare for any of the top drafted defenses to be the top scoring one. I went into my draft knowing that the only good defense from last year that was completely in tact was the Eagles defense. Thus, i pretty much drafted the Eagles or nobody. Turned out to be a good choice 😉

I do own the Vikes in a few leagues but I’ll likely be dumping them because their schedule is about to get MUCH harder.

Just goes to show, you never know how these things happen. In the end it’s not at all about how good a defense is but more about how many TOs they force and what percentage of those go to the house.

I played Burleson and Collie on your suggestion and secured a win. Nice job.

      • Brandon 1:37 pm on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Nice! Glad I could help someone out there AND wish I had either of those guys on any of my teams right now.

    • Julie 11:56 pm on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

have to comment– I had Burleson and Bradshaw on my bench per your recommendation. Was still able to pull off the win which made it a little less painful

      • Brandon 1:25 pm on October 13, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Glad you still pulled off the win at least. It was pretty amazing what the return of Matt Hasselbeck meant to the Seattle offense though. Nate Burleson was obviously happy about it! As for Bradshaw, the guy hadn’t scored a touchdown all season (and you would think Brandon Jacobs would be the goalline back) and then goes and scores twice! Oh well, that’s part of the fun/frustration I guess. Good luck this week though!

Wow, I think my eyes are burning out from looking at these Denver Broncos uniforms!

    • Squish 11:04 pm on October 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Whatever gets the job done I guess. I’m just happy to see Royal involved again. If he has to look like a dirty toilet to play that well, I think I’ll be able to stand it.

      • Brandon 9:06 am on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I have to imagine that the uniforms were what cost the Patriots the game. Tom Brady made a few bad throws, likely because of the brown/yellow candy-cane socked defenders all over the place (okay, so the picture is of Jabar Gaffney and the rest of the team wore their socks in a vertical pattern, but still.)

Hopefully you already heard, but Mike Sims-Walker is INACTIVE this week after violating an unspecified team rule…get in a backup if possible!

    • Mal 9:05 pm on October 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

The worst thing about being an Aussie. Sunday football starts at 3am Monday morning for me so Sims-Walker was alongside Megatron (injured in first qtr) in my WR lineup!

But thanks for all the tips as coming off my maiden win last week i’m pretty sure i’ve snagged another (assuming Austin Collie doesn’t bag 35 points)- 2 and 3 now! Big Ben, Burner, and Marshall pretty much brought it home for me by themselves so thanks for the advice to play turner and Marshall.

Queries this week were (noting I’m an Aussie in his first proper season of NFL)… very confused as to why Bradshaw got the goal line carries over Jacobs (make things better I have bradshaw on my bench in case of injury to jacobs).

Also, good to see Marshall bringing it to the house? Turning into a no.1 receiver? What happened to SF D, how come they got so shredded this week, Falcons really turned up the heat? Another one is Jaguars they got smoked, that wasn’t meant to happen was it? After seeing the cowboys this week (and a lot of articles I’ve been reading) has Roy Williams just been a dud buy for Dallas, assuming he comes back from injury do you think he can post some numbers? Hopefully Megatron isn’t seriously injured (and Sims-walker has only a 1 week ban) otherwise i’ll be searching the waiver wire for at least 1 WR with the injury to Williams too.

Also how do you get an avatar? Have to have a certain amount of posts?

      Good to

      • Brandon 8:47 am on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Let’s see if I can respond to all of your questions, but let me know if I missed one!

        – You can get an avatar by signing up here: http://en.gravatar.com/
        – Only one of Bradshaw’s touchdowns was on a goal line carry, with the other coming from 19 yards out. The fact that he got that goal line carry though has to be a bit disconcerting to Brandon Jacobs owners. Up until this game, Bradshaw had zero touchdowns (although Jacobs only had one.) We’ll need more evidence to see if the team really has a favorite running back when they get into the red zone, but it’s apparent that Bradshaw is the real deal and would probably be the starter for a number of teams out there.
        – Brandon Marshall was already a #1 receiver (look at his stats the past two years.) He just had a bad off-season, which carried over into the first few weeks of this season. He’s back and good to go as a WR1 candidate down the stretch.
        – Not exactly sure what happened to the 49er’s defense this week (besides the fact that they got destroyed.) Maybe the BYE week is just what the Falcons needed to get their offense back in gear and it was just too much for San Francisco to handle.
        – No one could have predicted how well the Seahawks would play with Matt Hasselbeck returning from injury…or how badly the Jaguars would play.
        – I’m almost ready to write Roy Williams off as a bust in Dallas, especially considering the talent they apparently had waiting in the wings with Miles Austin! I think Williams can still put up WR2 or WR3 numbers when healthy, just don’t expect him to carry your team.
        – It didn’t look like Megatron was hurt too bad from the replay, but I assume knee injuries are always worrisome to wide receivers. Check back towards the end of the week to see the extent of the injury though, as he could be sidelined for a week or two. Sims-Walker will be back on the field I’m sure next week and will be playing harder than ever to make up for his mistake.

ha, thanks a lot, you got them all

    • Squish 11:02 pm on October 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, that was a pile of crap there. i had him in a TON of Flea Flicker lineups and never saw the news. Luckily it turned out to be a good week for me in all my leagues so it didn’t make a difference.

    Good luck!

Headin’ out for the last boat ride of the season, so won’t be on to give last minute advice. Good luck to everyone though this week!

    • Brandon 9:14 am on October 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Boat ride turned out to be real short, as it was super choppy and windy and after smashing down on a few huge swells we lost control of the boats rudder. Luckily we had twin engines and were able to maneuver using those without the use of the steering wheel!

Ask the Geeks: Let's go Patriots!

Before we get started, I wanted to remind you that New England goes to Denver to play the undefeated Broncos this afternoon, so…LET’S GO PATRIOTS!!! Anyways, here are the remaining Ask the Geek questions for week five. Hopefully they can help a few teams get to the 5-0 mark this week! Remember, you can send any additional inquiries you have to us here or simply leave them as comments on our posts and we’ll try our best to respond to them as soon as possible.

    Lois asks…

Would you start Romo or Garrard? I’m not trusting Romo but his looks like the better match-up? Have one more question…Slaton or A.Bradshaw?

Who’s the better stash: Michael Bush, Shonn Greene, Jamal Charles, or Chester Taylor?

      • Brandon 10:40 am on October 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Chester Taylor if you have AP, Shonn Greene in a keeper league, but Michael Bush for this season I guess…although he probably won’t have much value anyways.

    • Pierre Garcon 10:48 am on October 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

When my teammate, Anthony Gonzalez, comes back from his injury, should I be dropped in all leagues for a better WR Free Agent or will I still have fantasy value?

      • Brandon 4:05 pm on October 11, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hello Mr. Garcon, not often we have a celebrity visit our site! Anyways, I wouldn’t be too quick to recommend people dropping you from their teams. Peyton Manning throws the ball enough to make more than two wide receivers fantasy relevant. I’d say to just be patient.

I need some help here for my last RB spot – Jerome Harrison who’s by himself in the backfield or two more proven guys splitting touches – Ray Rice / M.Lynch?

        Go with Harrison

Wow, did not expect Jamal Lewis or Marshawn Lynch to get the kind of work they did this weekend. Looks like Fred Jackson and Jerome Harrison go back to the bench for the time being.

Start your receivers in the order you list them depending on how many spots you have. Go with Warner.

      Kevin Smith
      Donald Brown
      Michael Bush
