The Wire – Week 17: Anyone Still Playing?

For those of you in leagues that have their championship in week 17, here are a few quick waiver wire thoughts (since we’re too lazy to put out our full-fledged The Wire this week!) (More …)

Wow, tough loss there. Hopefully they’ll have some late scoring change that helps you win (might be a bit too late at this point though)

Fighting for third as Peyton Manning and NYG’s defense cost me a spot in the top two…
      So, on to the questions:
      Orton or P. Manning?
      WRs Pick 2:
      Fitzgerald
      Colston
      Sims-Walker
      Britt
      Aromashodu
      RBs Pick 2
      Jamaal Charles
      Cedric Benson
      Ganther
      TE Pick 1
      Heath Miller
      Fred Davis
      Flex Pick 3:
Anyone stated above not already picked 1 W/T, and 2 W/R

Also worth noting are some(maybe) attractive options on the wire and my 2 empty bench slots:
      Donald Brown
      Arian Foster
      Josh Morgan

      Thoughts?
(Thanks for all the help this year making my first year of Fantasy Football memorable.)

It sounds pretty crazy, but at quarterback I think your best play is actually Josh Freeman against the Falcons. Last time the Bucs and Falcons played, Freeman threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns, so there’s hope that he can do it again.

As for your receivers, go with Marques Colston and roll the dice on Aromashodu. It’s hard to bench Larry Fitzgerald, but you won’t know if the Cardinals have anything to play for until the start of their game, so it’s a bit risky.

At running back, I’d go with Jamaal Charles and Quinton Ganther. The Bengals are already in the playoffs and have little to play for against the Jets, who have a solid run defense AND are playing for a spot in the playoffs.

At tight end I like Fred Davis against a Chargers team who could be resting their star players on defense a bit early.

Finally, in the flex spots, go with Donald Brown and Mike Sims-Walker.

Just one more week…almost there 🙂 I am leading by 70 points and the championship is determined by cumulative scores of last 2 weeks. I doubt the opponent can cover so much, still have to do my best :):):):):) Alright need your advice on this QB Rivers or Romo? Def : Steelers or 49ers TE: Kellen Winslow or Fred Davis

      • Brandon 8:23 am on December 31, 2009 Permalink | Reply

At quarterback you have to start Tony Romo, who at least has something to play for (playoff seeding.) As for your defense, go with San Francisco against the Rams and then at tight end I’d go with Kellen Winslow against the Falcons. Good luck!

Leading by 39 points into the 2nd-of-2 week of the final match… thinking about dropping Rodgers for a full-game QB like Orton or Young, what do you think?

I am also trying to get Olsen (plays DET) to replace Fred Davis (faces SD) in the TE spot… even with their benchers, San Diego is more likely to stop WAS. No Todd Heap because I don’t want another surprise by the Raiders (this is why I’m also keeping the 49ers DEF instead of BAL… St Louis is way scarier with an injured SJax)

      • Brandon 8:28 am on December 31, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I like Kyle Orton against the Chiefs this week, as Rodgers is a bit risky with very little on the line for the Packers besides maybe one seed difference in the playoffs.

Re: my earlier post – Didn’t get Orton off waivers, someone else had priority apparently. Leaves me with the following waiver choices as an option rather than Manning:
      Freeman, Sanchez, Leinart…
      Wish I’d gotten Orton…

          D. Bowe
          H. Nicks
          D. Aromashodu
          R. Meachum

p.s. would you pick up and play McGahee (v. OAK) in lieu of T.Jones (v. CIN)?

        • Brandon 10:24 pm on January 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

At receiver, go with Bowe, Aromashodu and Meachem. As for your running back question, stick with Thomas Jones, who should have a solid game with the Jets playoff hopes possibly on the line.

Hearing Donald Brown might not get the bulk of the Colts carries. Should I be looking at other options or wait for more updates?

      • Brandon 10:12 pm on January 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

From what I’m hearing Donald Brown could be a pretty risky play. Third stringer Mike Hart could see most of the action in the backfield for the Colts this Sunday and he’s worth a shot against a bad Bills run defense.

At quarterback, go with Brett Favre. For running back, go with Cadillac and Charles. At receiver, go with Fitzgerald and Jennings. Finally, at tight end, go with Jermichael Finley, as there’s worries that Gates will play very much his game.

Just a few of the early INACTIVES reported by NFL.com

    • Michael Turner (ATL) out; Jason Snelling makes a solid play against the Bills and their NFL-worst run defense
    • DeAngelo Williams (CAR) out; Jonathan Stewart will get a ton of carries.
    • Nate Burleson is out.

Great call on the Falcon’s defense this week. They may have put me over the edge in a league I was hurting at defense.

In other news, the yahoo scoring change for the week 15 Warner to Boldin pass/lateral put me in a championship game without my even having realized it. My pride made me fight for the 3rd place spot and I just realized today that I more than likely accidentally won a championship lol. Went from a 2 point loss to a 4 point win! Best part: it was my money league! It remains to be seen whether I’ll get the $330 and Titlecraft trophy in winnings (I’ll believe it when I see it), but at the very least it’s nice to walk away with the championship in an ultra competitive league, prize or no.

Looks to be a 50-50 week this week. Looks like I’ve tied down 4 championships, a second place finish and 2 thirds. Looking like I’ll play for another championship and two more third place finishes next week.

Just wanted to thank you guys again for all the great help! I thought a lot more deeply about my weekly plays thanks to the great articles you post. Usually you were right, sometimes you were wrong, but in each case I was better off because of your advice. Thanks again!

P.S. Any chance you guys will be around after the season to answer some keeper questions? I have a 5th place team that I loaded with dropped IR studs. I’ll need some help sorting it out.

    No stone unturned: DEF sleepers

Whether you’re in the finals or the semis this week, now is not the time to remain blindly loyal to the defensive unit that’s taken you this far. It’s certainly tempting to stick with what works, but given that DEF is by far the most opponent-dependent position in fantasy football, it’s more than worth it to check the waiver wire for defenses with juicy matchups. Hey guys! First time to your blog and love it! Nothing fancy just great infomation! I am in the championship in my league and need some advice.

QB- Schaub at Miami or Mcnabb vs Denver

RB- Barber At washington, Maroney vs Jville, Snelling vs Buffalo, Grant vs Seattle (Pick 2)

TE- Finley vs Seattle or Witten At Washington

By the way I am a huge Packers fan and follow the team very closely. I have seen what Brian brohm can do against 2nd and 3rd stringers during preseason. IF he gets the start on the road in the dome at ATL you have to play ATL D. Last week ATL played another inexperienced QB in Sanchez and the Jets and they shut them down! They will dominate Brohm! Only reason he is still in the league is because of what he did his junior year at Louisville! He is horrible, play ATL D and win your championship!!

Those are some ridiculous options. Andre Johnson is the absolute must-start of this group. Even though you’d normally think of Moss as a must-start, I’d bench him in your case because he’s gone five games in a row without a 100-yard performance, that troubling one-catch game was only two weeks ago, and he’s averaged just over three catches per game over the past five.

I’m looking pretty good going into the championship game with a healthy team and great matchups to boot while my opponent has some really tough matchups, a key guy that might sit and injury problems.

Last week I started (we get return yards btw).:

      Rivers
      Moss
      Fitzgerald
      Cribbs
      Rice
      Wells
      Tony Gonzalez
      Saints
      Tynes
James Harrison (this week I picked up Beason for this slot)

      My opponent has
      McNabb
      Mason
      Cotchery
      DeSean
      Barber
Harrison (he picked him up this week for Forsett, he’s got Turner out)
      Dallas Clark
      Steelers
      Nugent
      London Fletcher

My question is related to my RBs. I had been using Pierre Thomas all year long until 2 weeks ago but it’s been effort poorly spent.

I have been toying around with the idea of starting Wells and Thomas this week to avoid the Steelers run D with Rice but there’s no way to bench him. So Wells or Thomas? Right now I’m leaning heavy towards Wells since hes the man, riding a 2 game TD streak and even the Texans could run on the Rams, plus I expect AZ to get up early.

      • Matt 9:51 am on December 24, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I agree – you’re going with Wells for all the right reasons. This is going to be a rout and the Cards use Wells far more than Hightower in these kinds of games, with last week’s game in Detroit (17 rush, 110 yards and a score) a perfect example of what he can do against a bad opponent. He’s a virtual lock for a nice game, whereas the same certainly can’t be said for Thomas, who hasn’t found the end zone since week 11.

QB – Which Manning? If it’s Peyton, then go with him. If it’s Eli, then go with Ben.
WR – Smith. By a mile. Don’t overthink this one.

this is who I have, who should I start. Some are obvious put I’m still putting my whole line up.

      QB – Rivers, Orton
RB – C. Johnson, Ganther, M. Morris, Jennings, Westbrook
WR – Austin, Ochocinco, Avery, Burleson, J. Morgan
      DEF – SF or NE

      1QB
      2RB
      2WR
      1WR/RB
      1DEF

      • Matt 9:58 am on December 24, 2009 Permalink | Reply

QB – Rivers by a mile, no question.
        RB – CJ + Ganther
WR – Austin + Ocho (by a mile)
        DEF – 49ers. Again, by a mile.

These are all straightforward picks, which is great – no second-guessing.

We play 1 QB and I must start a min of 1 RB and 1 WR above. I have three more slots for RB/WR mix. Who should I start?

I worry about Romo this week – Washington shut him down pretty well earlier in the season, and despite their issues they always show up to play in division games. Smith has Detroit, one of the sweetest matchups for any fantasy QB, and in your shoes I think I’d give him a shot over Romo.

There’s no way you bench Harrison this week. Absolutely no way, especially given that he’s got another sweet matchup. So go with him, both Jacksons, Rice, and Moss.

Fred Davis at tight end, Holmes in the flex spot and at defense, go with the 49ers.

What kills me is that any bozo can make an internet fantasy page. Even the ones that charge typically have incompetent people giving their opinions. Think about this. Buffalo has the #5 pass defense in the NFL for 2009. This week they lost their #1 corner and their all pro safety who has 9 ints. Now, how is it that you can tout the great Buffalo pass defense. THEY’RE NOT PLAYING!!! Do your homework! And their #2 corner is out too! Who’s gonna cover?

Hey Guys, looking for advice from anyone who would like to share it.

My RB situation is totally messing with my head.

      Pick 2

Marion Barber…coming off his best game of the season and up against the pitiful Redskins.
Jonathan Stewart…if Deangelo is out again this guy seems to dominate. Going up against a decent Giants run D.
Lawrence Maroney…at home vs. the Jags, he has been my most consistent back over the last few weeks. I also have Brady though, so if the Pats get shut out or limited to FGs then I’m screwed by playing both guys. (I know its unlikely)
Pierre Thomas…on the best offense in the league, but has really been pretty lousy for the last 4-5 games. No PPR for RBs in in my league, otherwise he’d be a must start. Up against the Bucs worst run D in the NFL.
      And the Sleeper.
Last weeks mystery stud Michael Bush…I’m not really considering him, but he did have a huge game last week, and this week he plays the god awful Browns.

      Thanks!! Merry Xmas.

      Bobby

      QB: Palmer
      WR: A. Johnson
      WR: A. Bryant
      RB: R.Grant
      RB: L. McCoy
      TE: D. Thomas
      FLEX: M. Morris
      DEF: Atlanta
      D: L. Briggs
      D: B. Cushing

      K. N Keading

Here is my bench… If you think anything should switch let me know man thanks.

      WR. A. Collie
      WR. L Moorse
      WR. M. Massaquoi
      RB. J. Forrset
      QB. C Henne
      TE. Z Miller
      K. L Tynes
      D. C. Sessions

The only real change I’d consider making is replacing Antonio Bryant with Austin Collie. Collie will most likely not be one of the Colts benched early if they decide to go that direction in this game. Good luck.

I have a tought choice to make between Santonio Holmes, Ocho-Cinco and Chris Chambers at WR. Who should I start and should I bench Michael Bush against the Cleveland sieve D and use one of the WR as a flex?

      • Brandon 10:05 am on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I like Holmes and Ochocinco at wide receiver, with Michael Bush over Chambers in the flex spot. The worry with Chambers is that Dwayne Bowe will take over as the top receiver now that he’s back in the swing of things.

      Quarterback Dilemma:

I have Manning slated to start v. Jets; but Warner v. Rams on the bench. My gut says go with Warner v. Rams (they are terrible) but he has been average at best the past two weeks. But Manning faces the #1 defense in the NFL, and may have limited playing time…

      What to do?

      • Brandon 10:03 am on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Warner just in case Manning doesn’t play the whole game.

      KEEPER LEAGUE QUESTION —

I’m in a keeper league and think I have a decent idea about who to keep on my roster — does anyone know of any article with a list of possible sleeper keepers for the next year (our rules are you can keep anyone you just lose a draft pick 2 rounds higher than the round they were originally drafted)

      Let me know

Well guy I’m in the championship game and I’d like to say thank’s for your help when I needed it, good luck to you as well. I needed to know If I should start
QB: Peyton Manning or Alex Smith
WR: Randy Moss, Brandon Marshall, or Santonio Holmes (I need two receivers)
RB: Laurence Maroney or Marion Barber
I’d really appreciate your help as you can see I have good players thats why its so hard for me to decide.

      • Brandon 11:42 pm on December 26, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yahoo apparently loves Donald Driver this week, but I’m going with Derrick Mason, who has a touchdown in two straight games is the uncontested number one receiver in the offense.

    • Greg 3:03 pm on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Maurice Morris or Brian Westbrook? Normally a no brainer. You can’t predict BW’s touches but I don’t trust backups who have one good game as a fill-in #1. Westbrook is home and Morris is away. Denver has batter D. I’m squarely on the picket fence and it’s not comfortable.

      • Tommy 6:36 pm on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

10000000% Maurice Morris. Westbrook is a complete gamble, and Maurice Morris is guaranteed carries.

I’ve got Gonzalez at TE. Finley is available, and I’m looking to find points anywhere I can get them. Thoughts as between the two? Gave up Vernon Davis earlier in the season thinking that I would never justify starting him over Tony G. Don’t want to foolishly overestimate Gonzo again. Your advice is always appreciated.

      • Brandon 11:38 pm on December 26, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’d stick with Gonzo this weekend. He’s been getting looks on a consistent basis all season and there’s no real reason to switch to Finley.

In the final – $600 on the line playing the number 1 team
      PPR, 1pt/20yds rush/rec, 6 pts/TD
Need 2 RB: Rice, Wells, PT, Harrison
Need 2 WR: Colston, Driver, Crabtree
      Need 1 TE: Dallas Clark,Finley
Am thinking Rice, Wells, Colston, Crabtree, Finley
      Thoughts?
Worth mentioning that my opponent has Rogers, so Finley over Clark seems like the right move (IND may rest starters). Really torn over Driver vs. Crabtree.
      My line-up (as of now):
Brees, Rice, Wells, Colston, Crabtree, Finley, Bironas, Cards D

      Opponent:
Rogers, AP, Benson, Wayne, Welker, Winslow, Akers, Ravens D
How do you like my chances???

      • Brandon 11:09 am on December 27, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I also like Rice, Wells, Colston and Finley, but at receiver I’d go with Donald Driver, who has proven to have more big game potential than Crabtree at this point.

As for your chances, it should be a pretty good battle, but hopefully Reggie Wayne has a short day and gives you the slight edge. Good luck and feel free to “donate” a bit of those winnings to the FFGeekBlog cause!

Wow, that’s a tough (but good) decision to have to make. Last time the Saints played Tampa Bay, he didn’t rack up all that much yardage, but he still managed three touchdowns. I’m guessing this week he throws for some solid yards and again gets the touchdowns as well as his team fights to clinch home field advantage in the playoffs. Go with Brees.

Here’s my dilemma, heading into the finals…

        We have at QB:

        Jay Cutler vs. Minnesota
        Matt Moore @ NYG

        At running back, pick 4:
        Maurice Jones Drew @NE
        Jamaal Charles @Cincinnati
        Ahmad Bradshaw vs. Carolina
        Jerome Harrison vs. Oakland
        Quinton Ganther vs. Dallas
        Maurice Morris @SF

        At WR, pick 4:
        Vincent Jackson @Tennessee
        Devin Thomas vs. Dallas
        Chris Chambers @ Cincinnati
        Dwyane Bowe @ Cincinnati
        Mike Thomas @ NE
        Justin Gage vs. SD

And also, do you think Brees will play this week? I’m playing him this week…

Thanks a lot for your help.

          My bad, pick *3* WRs

        • Brandon 9:33 am on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

At quarterback, I think you have to go with Jay Cutler (even if he’s been pretty scary this season.) The Vikings haven’t been all that great lately against the pass, giving up three touchdowns to both Kurt Warner and Matt Moore in the past three weeks.

At running back, I like MJD, Charles, Bradshaw (hope he gets a touchdown or two again) and Jerome Harrison, although he’s risky and there’s no way he’s having a week like he did last Sunday.

At receiver, go with Vincent Jackson, Chris Chambers (although you could easily put Bowe in here instead) and take the gamble on Justin Gage.

As for Brees, I’m sure he’ll play most of the game. The team wants to erase the memory of that loss and there’s no way they’ll let themselves limp into the playoffs with two or three losses in the last three weeks of the season.

        • Brandon 11:53 pm on December 26, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Wow Justin Gage…nice game! Hopefully you ignored my advice on that one, but otherwise, hopefully the other guys step it up.

          I started Moore at QB.

Started MJD, Charles, Harrison, and Bradshaw at RB…
and Jackson, Chambers, and Gage at WR.

I’m down 11, guy I’m playing has no players and I have Fred Davis and Danieal Manning. hopefully i win

Lost a few last week, I think I have 4 championships, 4 semi-finals, and 3 third place games this week. Hopefully everything turns out better this week than last!

Go with the Giants on defense, as they still have something to play for. At running back, I think you want to roll the dice on Jerome Harrison and hope he can get at least a third of the numbers he put up last week. Good luck!
