User Requested Player Ranks – Week 2
With week one in the books and waivers processed for most leagues (unless your Yahoo! league is screwed up like ours!) it’s time to begin setting your rosters for this Sunday. As I mentioned in last week’s post, this year we’re trying something a little different when it comes to player rankings, which is to let YOU decide which players show up on the lists. This means less work for me (or at least spreads out the work) while ensuring that all requested players show up on the lists and all quandaries are resolved.
Hopefully last weeks rankings helped at least a few teams out there win their first match-ups and overall I think the process of adding the players on request seemed to go smoothly. If you have any Flex slot questions, continue to post those as comments and we can respond to them individually.
Anyways, feel free to start posting your line-up questions, along with any questions/comments about this new format. As with last week, I’ve kicked off the lists with players from my own teams to get things started. For a permalink to the rankings for the week, view the Google Docs spreadsheet here.

Thanks! Interesting rankings. I expect Washington’s run defense to be much stronger than Indy’s, but there’s still no way anyone should sit Foster.

I’m no Pro (and I disagree with their ranks), but I would suggest going with Schaub. Baltimore’s pass defense shut down the Jets last week (10-21 74yds) and I think Schaub’s low numbers last week (9-17 107 yds. 1 TD 1 INT) were only because Foster was running so well all over the Colts. Looking at the stats I see Washington gave up the 5th most amount of passing yards last week and Baltimore gave up the least.

As far as I’m concerned, this one is nearly a coin flip. The arguments for starting Palmer are that he’s A) at home, B) looked decent last week, C) has more options in the passing game than Schaub and D) isn’t as bad as Mark Sanchez, so he shouldn’t be held in check as easily as the Ravens did to the Jets. Schaub gets to play the team that as Mark mentioned, let up the 5th most passing yards (albeit to a solid quarterback – Tony Romo) last week. I expect that the Redskins see a large dose of Arian Foster again after the team takes an early lead, so I’m a little worried that Schaub won’t be needed to carry the team again. I’m still leaning towards Palmer, but it’s VERY close. Hopefully you pick the right one

Hard to say for the rest of the season, as you never know what will happen in terms of injuries, but at the moment I like Cadillac better. Although the Bucs will probably end up in last place in their division, I like the direction their offense is heading…something I can’t say for the Redskins.

My WR/TE are Reggie Wayne, Jermichael Finley, Steve Breaston, Zach Miller, Mike Wallace, Nate Washington

I believe all of those players are on the lists, so check them out. In terms of WR and TE, I’d recommend you start them in this order: Wayne, Breaston, Finley, Wallace, Washington and Miller.

It’s funny that you put him right next to Garcon, because that’s who I’m deciding between. Percy Harvin in an inept offense with migraine issues or Pierre Garcon who dropped a lot of balls on Sunday. I’m wondering if Garcon will lose any playing time because of it or if he will bounce back this week. Thanks again.

Although we haven’t really had a great chance to see him in the starting role yet, I think Brandon Jackson definitely has the most upside of those three. Spiller was disappointing last week and will compete with Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch. LT shares carries with Shonn Greene, who should end up being the primary ball carrier if he can get a handle on ball security issues.
Jackson will be the starter for the Packers and any backup they have will most likely only be there to give him a breather.

Just added those guys to the list. As for Gronkowski, who would you have to drop and who is your current tight end? He’s got about the same value as Aaron Hernandez right now and Jermaine Gresham of the Bengals will probably be the best fantasy rookie tight end when all is said and done.

I lost Ryan Grant
But luckily was able to pick up Brandon Jackson on waivers 
now, my issue is I have a difficult decision (in this case, a good thing) heading into week 2. I have 4 RBs, must start 2:
Brandon Jackson vs BUF
Matt Forte @ DAL
Jahvid Best vs PHI
LT vs NE
-I feel like Jackson is a sure thing being at home and against BUFFALO, but the other 3 are tough…
-Forte is only projected by Yahoo! to put up about 7 fantasy points, but I feel like they lowball him, especially with his big role in Martz’ offense recieving as well.
-Jahvid will be at home, but lost Stafford, and I cant get over the fact that he only had 20 rushing yards and 36 overall, despite his 2 TDs in week 1.
-LT may split many carries with Greene, but he did look MUCH better in week 1, and I feel he may be given the carry if it comes down to a goal line carry against NE.

Could you put Jacobs and L.T. on the list along with Malcom Floyd… I also would like to know if you think it is worth dropping Lee Evans to pick up Legedu Naanee( my starters are white and austin) so I was thinking I could acquire Naanee for the higher ceiling potential.

I like Naanee’s upside a lot more than Evans at this point. He should be more consistent as well. Pick him up while you have the chance!

I have Mike Williams TB, Randy Moss, Legedu Naanee, and Austin Collie as my WR’s. I am having troubling deciding who to start. Also I have the Cardinals and Ravens defense I am not sure if I feel safe playing either one. I was considering picking up the Panthers defense or the Titans for a one week plug. What do you think I should do?

Added your guys to the list. In terms of your defense, I’d actually stick with the Ravens. If they do well again this week against a decent offense, you could have yourself one of the top defenses of the year and you wouldn’t have to worry about switching them every week.

I have the 49ers defense (playing NO this week) but both San Diego (against Jac) and New England’s (against NYJ) defenses are available. Should I pick up one and play it this week or stay the course? (I would drop Fred Jackson in order to pick up another def.) I’m nervous about the 49ers, based on their performance last week but I’m also nervous about messing with my lineup too much. (Last year, I shot myself in the foot early in the season by messing with my lineup and losing some of my best players.) Thanks!

I’d be nervous when you start talking about dropping running backs to pick up defenses. However, if you just drop the 49ers defense to pick up New England this week, I see no harm in that. Remember in the draft, when no one was picking a defense till the very end? That’s because defensive units score points very inconsistently and in the end, the difference in total points between most of them is very small. I’d just drop the 49ers this week, then when they let up 35 points to the Saints this weekend, you can pick them up again

Vick will post better numbers that Brady this week.
Also Shiancoe Vs. Z. Miller
And Ray Rice is the most overrated RB this year. He is going to get vultured every week by Mcgahee or Mcclain.

I put Brady at the top to start, but I could be swayed slightly. However, I can’t put Vick at the top of the list just because he’s playing Detroit. I make these rankings thinking, “Who would I start?” Would I start Michael Vick over Tom Brady? No. Will Vick score more points than Brady? Maybe, but I’d rather lose with Brady in my QB slot than with Vick there and Brady blowing up on my bench.

You have Celek ranked WAYY too high – He was thrown to like twice last week and they were in a row – Vick only looks for DJAX and Kolb is a sloppy mess

Sooo…I should put Gronkowski, who had one catch for one yard (albeit a touchdown) and is playing the Jets ahead of Celek, who is playing the Detroit Lions and had 76 catches last year? Even with Vick at quarterback, at least for now I’m more comfortable with Celek being a regular target in the passing game, while Gronkowski could be used primarily as a red zone target when Randy Moss is covered.
By the way, when Kolb started at quarterback for the Eagles last year (weeks 2&3), Celek combined for 16 catches, over 200 yards and a touchdown. I know Kolb won’t be starting this weekend, but at least give Celek more than one week to lose complete faith in him

Oh yeah definitely…except for Jason Witten. Seems the team is using him to block a lot more right now as they’re having offensive line issues. I’d play Celek over him until he can show that he’s a viable target for Romo.

Yep – went 3-0 in my 3 money fantasy leagues … that one league where I started Naanee over Boldin was key, won by 2 points. Anyways, this is a collection of my players that I will have questions about, so now you know!
I was thinking, maybe you should take the TOP 50 FPP (fantasy point producers) and just rank them right out the gate … it’ll save some time. Then folks can discuss who to start/sit … I’ll chime in from time-to-time as well …

That’s an idea. The biggest reason I did the ranks this way to start is because I find it much easier to break it down to an individual basis and say “this player will be better than this guy, but worse than this guy”. If I take a list of 50 top scorers and then try to re-arrange them, it gets tricky because their scoring from previous weeks will make me second guess all my rankings I think. If somehow I got a randomized list of the top 50 scorers, then I could re-arrange them easily to my liking maybe. Who knows, I’ll keep your recommendation in mind though for next week. By the end of the year I’ll have a perfect system!

Thanks guys – helps me get a better picture and organize my jumbled thoughts. I have two questions that aren’t answered by the chart if you don’t mind:
1) I need a defense (have Bengals = 0pts last week) and have been eying the Patriots and the Giants. I love the Pats matchup obviously and I have a lot of faith in their coaching. I hate the Giants matchup this week but am thinking they could develop into a good FF-D with their pass rush and potential interceptions. We have limited funds for waivers so I want to avoid shuffling D’s each week. Which way would you go?
2) I also want to pick up a WR. I am looking towards Collie and Nanee (both Williamses avail too). I can’t decide between the two. I currently have Jennings-Nicks-Knox-Wallace

Added Knox. As for defenses, since you’re not trying to play a new one each week, you should probably stay with the Bengals. They just sucked last week because they played one of the best offenses in the league. The Patriots will be decent when they play the Jets and Bills, but otherwise they’ll be very risky with such a young secondary. The Giants schedule looks decent, but not worth wasting a transaction on them.
As for your wide receiver, who would you drop for Collie or Naanee? I like them about the same right now but I guess I’d lean towards Naanee if I HAD to make a choice, just because of his spot on the team’s pecking order vs Collie’s.

Also – NE over Baltimore… I have both DEF and put NE on my bench week 1. I was obviously disappointed as NE scored much better than Baltimore. I’m deciding which to start week 2. Baltimore going up against Cin, who NE did so well against (in terms of DEF points) or NE against the Jets. What reason do you have for putting NE ahead?

Just added Benson and Williams. As for defenses, I would have definitely benched the Pats defense in week 1! They looked absolutely horrible in the preseason. The only reason they did well last week from a fantasy perspective was due to two returns for touchdowns. Don’t expect that again this week (although a few interceptions wouldn’t be unexpected with Sanchez throwing the ball!) I still like NE over Baltimore this week only because of how inept the Jets offense looked last week. I think it was more them being bad than the Ravens being good…although that helped too! Both make solid plays though. Good luck!

Just added them. I like Flacco a little bit more this week, primarily based on the receivers he has to throw to. I also think MJD has a bigger role in the Jaguars offense this week. If Garrard gets three touchdowns on just 170 yards passing again though, all bets are off

I have CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson–should I be dumping them and looking for a different 2 guys? They’re on my bench, which also includes Reggie Bush and Fred Taylor. I start DeAngelo Williams, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson.
Also–is Devin Hester worth keeping? I saw on some late pre-season sheets that he was #1 starter for Chicago, but I don’t think that’s true.

Depends on what alternatives you have. I’d probably hang on to Spiller and Jackson for a bit and see if they improve over the next few games. Will be interesting to see the split of carries when Marshawn Lynch returns though.
As for Hester, I’m not sure he’ll ultimately be worth a spot on your roster, but for now keep him there unless you have a better alternative in free agency. Any decent receivers available?

I added Kansas City to the list. I really don’t like San Francisco this week after that embarrassment with Seattle last week, plus the fact that they’re playing the Saints this weekend. Are there any defenses higher up on my list than Kansas City available in your league? If so, I just recommend you drop SF and pick up one of them for the week. You’ll be able to get SF again next week I’m sure if you really want them.

He’s on there now. Have him basically dead-even with his teammate Mike Thomas. I doubt we’ll see another no-show from Sims-Walker this weekend, but he and Thomas could be pretty equal in terms of targets from here on out.

Okay so I won my matchup in week 1…thanks for the help!!! Question though, can you add Philadelphia for the defense list. Also, wondering about P. Thomas versus C. Benson. I see where they are ranked above, but which one fairs better in a PPR league? Also, given Sims-Walker’s non existing play last week, I would be afraid to play him, but I need 2 receivers of these…M. Wallace, A. Collie, J. Gaffney, or Sims-Walker. I will play Wayne as my WR1 and I hate putting two WRs from the same team in my lineup, however I was kicking myself last week for benching Collie over Wallace. Also, I have V. Davis and Z. Miller as my tight ends…I see Davis is ranked higher? Even considering the opponents? Is NO easier on TEs than StL? Just wanted to double check! Thanks again!

At tight end, go with Vernon Davis. The Saints just gave up lots of fantasy points to Vinsanthe Shiancoe and should do the same for Davis.
For receiver, I think you have to go with Wallace and Collie. Gaffney was the third best fantasy receiver on the team last week and Sims-Walker put up a goose egg. Make those guys prove themselves before putting them in your roster. Don’t kick yourself over last week though. In week 1, all you can do is go with the guys you drafted higher and expected to be better. Good luck!

I currently own Shonn Greene in a fantasy league on NFL.com. After watching his Monday Night game and reading the reports, I’m less than impressed with his performance and he seems to be losing a lot of carries to LT. I received a trade offer for Ahmad Bradshaw, who shows promise. Should I sit on Shonn to see if he pulls through? Or make the trade?

Added them to the list. Not high on McCluster until he actually does something other than return kicks. Maybe your league rewards for return yardage though? I like Eli this week against the Colts, where he should throw a lot.

My issue is for the flex spot in a ppr league. Choices are: Reggie Bush, Mike Sims-Walker or Mark Clayton. I can see Clayton ahead of Mike Sims-Walker by a tad, but what do you think?

I like Reggie Bush over the other two. I think Clayton will be covered by Nnamdi Asomugha and won’t be as successful as last week. Sims-Walker scared me too much last week.

I have a question. In a dilemma about what receivers to start tomorrow. I have Calvin Johnson Jr, T-O, Sims-Walker, and just grabbed Legadu Naane through waivers 6 pt td league 10 yards/ point. Stafford not playing on sunday kinda discourages me from starting johnson jr.

How many receivers you starting, three? I’d go Calvin Johnson, T.O. Naanee and then Sims-Walker, so Sims-Walker would be the odd man out. Keep Calvin Johnson in there though, as he should still have a decent chance to put up better numbers than the others with Shaun Hill at quarterback.

It hurt, but Walter got luck with the touchdown and would have had a crappy day too if he hadn’t scored. Roll the dice at least one more week with Sims-Walker, who will hopefully be trying to make a statement this game. Good luck!
