    Is Tarvaris Jackson worth starting?

Obviously, you’ve got better options. At least I hope you do. But if you’re desperate, my feeling is that Jackson’s not an abysmal option if Favre sits (and I’m not saying he will). Jackson has been a first- or second-team quarterback (ok, mostly second-team) for several years now. He’s never had a weapon like Randy Moss at his disposal or a tight end as good as Shiancoe.

OK, when it comes to talking up Jackson as a fantasy QB, that’s all I’ve got. It’s easy to take the other side and bash him, so I’m not going to bother, especially since two better low-end options have emerged this week (Fitzpatrick and Kitna), but for what it’s worth, I don’t think it’s ridiculous to start Jackson this week if you’re feeling both desperate and adventurous. The upside’s there, and its name is Randy Moss.

Hey, the rankings thread is really long so I’m gonna ask this here. Need to play 2 WRs out of this motley crew; Roy Williams, Donald Driver, Steve Breaston, and Brian Hartline. PPR league. Thanks!

      • Brandon 12:25 pm on October 31, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Not that great of options, but I’d go with Roy Williams and gamble on Steve Breaston. Good luck!

Speaking of DeAngelo Williams, he missed practice yesterday and is questionable for Sunday, which is too bad given that the Panthers are taking on the Rams. If Williams doesn’t practice again today, Jonathan Stewart looks like a very solid start.

I have McFadden, Felix Jones, Steven Jackson, and Jonathan Stewart. I can play 3 of them. IF D-Willi can’t go, do I put Stewie in the line up? If so, who do I sit?

      • Matt 7:04 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Felix Jones is the only one I’d consider benching for Stewart. If DeAngelo Williams will sit this one out, then I’d start Stewart. If Williams is going to play but be limited, it’s a harder choice but I’d probably go with Jones.

        • Hawgman 8:24 am on October 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, I think I will be sticking with Felix. I like his match-up vs the Jags and I feel like the Romo-less Cows will be leaning more on the running game. Also, I am not convinced that the Hello Kitty’s O-line can open holes for Stewart or anyone else for that matter. It’s not line D-Willi has been blowing things up this year.
          Thanks for the thoughts….

I have been offered a trade Randy Moss & Carson Palmer for Mike Wallace & Michael Vick. I have Wallace & Vick, I am in a 12 man league with 2 RB, 2 WR and a Flex. My starting QB is Ben Roethlisberger and my top four WR are Wallace, Marshall, Roddy White, and Ochocinco. Should I accept this trade and get Randy Moss & Palmer as a back?

      • Hawgman 9:41 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

My thought is – You don’t need either player. Wallace (the SEA version) is getting targeted more than Moss and has a better QB chucking it to him (right now anyway). And if Vick does as well as he was before getting broken, he is a much better QB than Palmer.
You don’t want him to use Vick and BMW against you. Better to have them on YOUR bench than in your opponents starting lineup. Just my opinion…

      • Brandon 10:27 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Don’t do this trade. Vick and Wallace could outproduce Moss and Palmer down the stretch.

User Requested Player Ranks – Week 8

As I’ve mentioned previously, this year we’re trying something a little different when it comes to player rankings. We’re letting our readers decide which players show up on the lists. This means less work for me (or at least spreads out the work) while ensuring that all requested players show up on the lists and all quandaries are resolved. Hopefully last weeks rankings helped at least a few teams out there win their match-ups and hopefully this week’s do the same!

Remember, if you have any Flex slot questions, continue to post those as comments and we can respond to them individually. Anyways, feel free to start posting your line-up questions, along with any questions/comments about this new format. This week I’ve kicked off the lists with the top five players from last week at each position.

Spreadsheet after the jump. [Note from Matt: We’re moving the spreadsheets to the posts themselves instead of including them in the home page because they tend to slow the home page down, something I noticed as I was building the new design.] (More …)

Why do I feel hesitant to drop Jay Cutler? I picked up Kinta, so now I have Alex Smith, Mark Sanchez, Kinta and Cutler. I need to let one of them go. I can’t believe I want to hold on to Cutler. I think he reminds me of an ex boyfriends of mine, I kept getting my hopes up for him but he just wouldn’t do right! lol

      • Brandon 10:19 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I wonder why you feel hesitant to drop Alex Smith?! He’s out 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury and wasn’t necessarily lighting up the scoreboard to begin with 🙂 Grab Ryan Fitzpatrick or Matthew Stafford, who along with Kitna and Sanchez should give you a viable starter each week.

Okay, I’m not that attached to Alex, although week 7 he did better than Cutler even after getting injured in the 2nd quarter. He got 10 pts and Cutler got like 3.5 or so…

For kickers this year it has generally been a good plan to play whoever is playing the Bills. Thus Succop should top the list this week.

Hah, at the moment I guess. This isn’t a complete list of course. If I added Peyton Manning, he’d shoot to the top of the list, but other than that there isn’t a clear cut favorite this week at the position. The regulars (Brady, Brees, etc) have been slumping. Any suggestions for who should be at the top?

I’m surprised that you have ranked Brandon Jackson above Jahvid Best this week, but I guess I’m just more excited about Best saying he’s pretty close to 100%. The Minnesota D has been a disappointment for me this year, though, so I’m quick to agree with your placement on that. Seattle and Tampa Bay both are available in my league, so I’ll probably spot-start one of those instead. Thanks.

      Two trades that I’m thinking about proposing but would like some further wisdom on;

Larry Fitz & R. Torain for Adrian Peterson
      Or
Larry Fitz & R. Torain for Greg Jennings and Reggie Bush.
Not necessarily which is better, but what are your thoughts on both individually?

What say you? Thanks for your help!

      • Brandon 2:23 pm on October 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think I like either of them to be honest. The first one might be alright if you have decent WR depth, but I don’t like the other deal at all. I’m not convinced in the long run that Jennings and Bush are any better than Fitz and Torain (and could be worse if Torain stays starter all year.)

        • Andy 2:29 pm on October 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Well, I’ve got a bit of depth at receiver:

          WR Hines Ward
          WR Pierre Garcon
          WR Reggie Wayne
          WR Brandon Lloyd
          WR Deon Branch
          WR Larry Fitz
WR Austin Collie(out for a bit)

          and at RB I’ve got:

          RB Knowshon Moreno
          RB MJD
          RB R. Torain

If you could add them to the chart too, that’d be great. thanks again.

      Brady

Should I start Fitzpatrick over Brady this week? Im very tempted after dropping Mike Williams (Tampa Bay) for Fitz. Also should I pick up Lee Evans at this point? I have Hakeem Nicks, Danny Woodhead, Braylon Edwards, and Mike Williams (Seattle) at this point. I would have to drop one of those or one of my RBs which are compromised of C Johnson, Ahmad Bradshaw, Jamaal Charles, Jahvid Best, Lagerette Blount, and Shonn Greene to pick him up. Thoughts?

      • Brandon 9:55 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

It seems insane, but I have Fitzpatrick 2 spots ahead of Brady this week, so I guess I’m saying to start him :-\ As a Patriots fan though, I hope Brady proves me completely wrong. As for Lee Evans, I’d pick him up and drop Blount. You seem pretty solid at RB with the other guys and I can’t see you starting him as long as Cadillac is healthy and stealing carries.

    • Adam 6:29 pm on October 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Do I drop Tony Gonzalez and pick up Pettigrew or leave a hole in my lineup this week?? Gonzalez has been underperforming except his 2 TD game, but he will almost certainly be picked up if I put him on the waiver wire. Thanks!

Got them on there. Blount is apparently splitting carries with Cadillac now, so he should get 10-12 carries or so per game. He’ll need to make the most of those to become a fantasy factor though. Keep an eye on him though to see if they start using him around the goalline more (would be nice if they scored more to begin with though.)

Hey guys – wanted some feedback on a trade that was proposed to me this week. (non-ppr)

      Give:
      Ben Roethlisberger
      Mike Wallace

      Get:
      Calvin Johnson

My other QB is Rogers and I have Nicks/Jennings/Garcon/Crabtree as my other WR’s.

He may be a bit desperate as he had Romo as his only QB on the roster – so I am gonna try to work him down to taking Crabby instead of MW but not sure how that works out.

      Your thoughts?

Also – curious to see how close you really think Kitna & Rodgers really are – Jets will be tough coming off a bye & ready for GB at home, Kitna has Jac – crazy to pick up Kitna for a spot start this week over Rodgers? (would need to drop Freeman – who I’m holding just for Rodger’s bye in week 10 – to pick up Kitna. Could still possibly get Freeman, or Fitzpatrick, back again next week for that wk 10 game).

      Thanks

      • Brandon 1:48 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Added those guys. As for Kitna/Rodgers, I currently have Rodgers one spot ahead of Kitna and actually think their numbers could be pretty similar. Rodgers is the better quarterback for sure and plays a Jets pass defense that is a bit overrated at this point. Kitna has a great match-up and solid receivers, but is a bit riskier because you don’t really know what to expect from him. I’d drop Freeman for Kitna anyways though, as I think there could be weeks where you start Kitna over Rodgers if it turns out that he can put up decent numbers.

        Hello,
My story, I’m in a 14 team league (Yahoo). I did not know what I was doing at all during the live draft, ended up with a sub-par team. I’ve been trying to catch with very limited waiver choices. The top 5 league members are experienced FF players and great at grabing talent. I was dead last at one point in the season. my goal is to stay in the top 7 this season!

        My current roster:
        John Kita
        Hinds Ward
        Steve Johnson
        Chris Johnson
        Knowshon Moreno
        Health Miller
        Mark Sanchez
        Jay Cutler
        Danny Woodhead
        DeSean Jackson
        BenJarvus Green-Ellis
        Alex Smith
        Rob Bironas
        Matt Prater
        Washingon Redskins
        Seattle Seahawks
        ———————-

Players available as Free Agents as of last night:
        James Jones GB – WR
        LeGarrete Blount Bucs – RB
Travaris Jackson – Vik – QB
        Troy Smith – 49ers – QB

II wouldn’t bother with the free agents you have listed. I had a few questions about your league though. 1) Do you have restrictions on the number of roster moves (limit to number of moves or extra cost for each move?) and 2) do you start two defenses and two kickers? If the answer to these questions is no, then I recommend you drop your extra kicker and defense and just pick those positions up on a week-to-week basis. That way you can grab James Jones and LaGarrette Blount or whatever other decent free agents are in the league. Hopefully this helps!

I really like the one kicker strategy. I drafted Vinatari. When he went on bye last week, I dropped him and grabbed Carpenter (his bye week is past and he hasn’t missed this year).
I didn’t get a D/ST until the next to last round and most of the other teams in my league already had 2. I’ve just been rolling with the Bears (drafted) and the Dolphins (FA pick-up).

Thank you, that’s excellent advise. I never use that extra kicker anyway!

I’m debating about James Jones….I need to do more research on him. I don’t understand why he’s so “hot” right now.

        • Brandon 7:00 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

James Jones is doing well right now because Donald Driver has been a bit beat up and Jermichael Finley is out for the year. He won’t blow you away with his numbers, but he could make a serviceable WR3 for a couple games.

I picked up Cassel as backup to Brees for week 10.. I see now that Brees vs. PITT and Cassel vs. BUFF this week, any thoughts on the tough/easier matchup?

**It wouldn’t have ever crossed my mind but I lost this past week by 2.2 points and I blame it on Brees with his 3ish fantasy points through the first half and 4 interceptions, especially since he’s my team’s namesake, Pimpin Ain’t Breesy..

check this one, it added the parentheses at the end up there.

Gotta stick with Brees, even with a tougher match-up. Cassel has been getting lucky with his yards-to-touchdown ratio and I think that changes this week. I see the Chiefs running the ball all day on the Bills and think Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones will end up with the scores. The Saints have a pretty weak running game on the other hand and Brees should throw all day.

Like your image there by the way. Is that Carlton next to Drew Brees?

Okay yeah sweet, Brees all day sounds good to me!!

haha, Yeah it is, it doesn’t get more pimp than Carlton Banks

Has there been any word who is going to replace Dallas Clark for the Colts?

      • Brandon 3:39 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Jacob Tamme. The team president claims he’s everything Clark was offensively, but that’s yet to be seen. He’s worth a gamble if you’re in a bind at TE, since he has one of the best throwing him the ball.

    • Tommy 3:30 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I think Foster deserves to be #1… had over 200 rush yards against the Colts week 1

      • Brandon 3:48 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Got him near the top, but doubt he’ll repeat his ridiculous game from week 1. He won’t catch anyone off guard this time and the Colts seemed to have improved against the run dramatically since then. Plus, the game is in Indy this time around.

      hi brandon,
could you throw mcnabb on QB rankings, and do you think mcnabb is due for a big game? otherwise i have to pick fitz or ktina.

also, for WRs could you add amendola, and gettis? i am so weak at WR unfortunately, (drafted VJAX 8th round) esp w/ roddy on a bye. i am starting steve johnson, amendola, gettis unless you recommend blair white as a plug for this week.

      thanks a lot!

why do you have big ben so low on the list?

      • Brandon 8:42 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

He’ll probably end up doing a bit better than my rankings have him, but the Saints have been great against the pass this season. They’re the third best team in the league in passing yards allowed per game (180) and are allowing less than one passing score per game. This will be a big game in determining if the old Big Ben is back in business.

      Can we add:

      Calvin Johnson
      Mike Wallace

      Thanks

      • Brandon 9:45 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Added them. Love Megatron this week with Stafford back and a bad Redskins pass defense in town.

    • Brian 8:17 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Just curious why your so high on Jennings? I have him and am trying to decide between him and Mike Wallace.

I keep going back and forth on Jennings matchup – doubt the Packers will be able to run the ball much and thus pass a lot. Then fully expect the week I start Jennings against the Jets will be the day Revis reverts to 2009 form and locks him down.

      • Brandon 8:37 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, my ranking is based on the assumption that Revis will NOT revert back to 2009 form this game 🙂 Right now the Jets pass defense is highly overrated and is actually the 11th worst in the NFL in yards allowed to receivers per game and they’ve given up 10 receiving touchdowns in six games. The Saints defense on the other hand is #2 in the league in yards per game to receivers. I’d start both if possible, but I assume you have a couple other solid receivers?

      • Brandon 9:44 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I moved Jennings down a bit just now. Figured there is a better chance of Revis returning to his glory days after using the bye week to heal. Only moved him down a few spots though.

I need to pick up a Defense this week. Where does Dallas fall in your list?

I can’t decide if I should play Donald Driver or not. Also Mike Sims-Walker and Robert Meachum.

Ugh, my team turned out to be lousy.

      Brandon,

Non PPR I need to start 1 of these RB’s this week. Torain, Benson or Wells. Which one ? My other RB is Chris Johnson. Thanks,

      • Brandon 8:34 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Wells could have a big game against a bad Bucs run defense (plus Tim Hightower is in the doghouse) but I have no faith in that offense. Go with Ryan Torain against the Lions.

Got them on there. Thumbs up for Charles…not so much for the others. For Moore it all depends on if he gets a touchdown or not…kind of a crapshoot.

    • matt 11:45 am on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Do you think Pierre Garcon has a good chance of playing on his hamstring injury? If He doesn’t I have to pick up a new WR. I think I can get Kenny Britt, Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Dez Bryant, or Steve Johnson. Who do you like best this week?

      • Brandon 1:45 pm on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I think Garcon will play. Are all of those guys free agents or something? That’s a crazy league if so. There’s no way Britt, Colston and Steve Johnson should be free agents unless you’re in a 4 team league or something. Even then I’m not sure!

I’d go with Cooley against the Lions. Probably the safest option out of those guys. Royal has injury concerns and hasn’t been great lately. Shipley on the other hand needs a great game from Palmer to get opportunities to put up good numbers. Sooooo….in the name of goats blood, Cooley shall wrecketh.

but still deciding between mcnabb, or picking up kitna/fitz

      thanks!

      • Brandon 10:48 am on October 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Just added them. I’d go with Kitna if you have a roster spot to spare. Good luck with those receivers! Too bad it’s not last week…you would have scored some decent points 🙂

      My current team is:

      QB: Big Ben, Michael Vick
RB: Ryan Mathews, Gore, Forte, J Stewart, Pierre Thomas
      TE: Vernon Davis
WR: Roddy White, Calvin Johnson, Santonio Holmes, Jacoby Jones, Lee Evans
      K: Gostkowski
      Def: Chicago

I wanted to add another strong receiver to my team. A team in my league is down on Miles Austin since Romo got hurt, what do you think about trading Big Ben for Austin, and then picking up Kolb to serve as Vick’s backup in case he gets hurt again? I love the upside with Vick and would like to have him as my starting QB. I would then drop Evans because in my PPR league return yards count, and Jones is now returning kicks as well as punts.

      What do you think?

      • Brandon 11:08 am on October 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That sounds like a decent trade, but it’s a little risky as you don’t know how Austin will do now that Kitna is the quarterback. If he ends up doing well though, you’ll be stacked at WR with White, Megatron and Austin. I would keep Lee Evans though. What was the reason behind dropping him?

    • Adam 4:54 pm on October 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Can you please add Donald Brown to the list?

      • Brandon 10:38 am on October 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Added Brown. Not high on him this week, especially if he splits carries with Mike Hart. He’s a little beat up as well with hamstring issues. He should play though, but it’s risky with his game being Monday night. Good luck!

Ok I need help at my flex position.

I have 2 rb Chris Johnson, and beanie wells going this week.
I have 2 WR in Mike Wallace, and Mike Williams TB.

I need to fill my flex with either davone Bess, or knoshon moreno. I historically lean toward rbs however receivers seem to do very well the past year or 2. What do you think?

      • Brandon 11:04 am on October 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Well that didn’t quite work out as expected. Talk about a let down, as Stewart finally gets a chance to start puts up nearly identical (bad) stats as last week. Maybe it’s time to just give up any hopes for Stewart this year as the Panthers offense hasn’t shown much of anything.

He’s definitely worth a roster spot and after this week, his schedule looks pretty inviting. Holmes should only get better with each week he plays with Mark Sanchez, so I’d definitely take a shot on him.

If you've been as frustrated by DeAngel…

If you’ve been as frustrated by DeAngelo Williams as I have this season but haven’t quite given up on him yet, the Charlotte Observer offers a couple of reasons to hold out hope that he won’t be a total bust:

Until last week, Carolina’s downfield passing attack had been virtually nonexistent. But quarterback Matt Moore and rookie receivers David Gettis and Brandon LaFell connected on several big plays in a 23-20 win against San Francisco. […] Carolina also could benefit from an upcoming, five-game stretch against teams ranked 15th or lower in the NFL in run defense.

The good news for Williams owners is that backfield mate Jonathan Stewart has been even worse, so there’s little risk that he’ll lose any carries. It’s no use trading him now; you won’t get any kind of value for him. Bench him if you have better options, but keep an eye on the matchups and the performance of Carolina’s passing game, which just needs a little respect to open things up on the ground.
