The Wire – Week 8 pick-ups: Johnson and Gettis and Britt, oh my!
Here are the potential waiver wire targets for the upcoming week. This week we got some huge performances from some borderline fantasy starters (and David Gettis.) Maybe next week they’ll all be starting and can disappoint a lot of people out there…just kidding, maybe. Anyways, I’ve included my thoughts on each player, as well as the percentage owned (taken from Yahoo.) Take a look and see if any of these guys can help patch your squad together and carry you to the Promised Land…

hey brandon-
definitely should’ve played steve johnson. ended up getting a nice goose egg from donald driver.
is it time to part ways with any of these guys? forsett, benjarvus, amendola, louis murphy?
I have roddy white and ATL Def on bye. Someone just picked up you’re recommended TB def, so what is your 2nd def of the week? possibly dallas? And at this point, do you drop ATL DEF or drop one of the above players for a DEF?
thanks a lot!
Jack 3:10 pm on October 25, 2010 Permalink |
sorry one more q: what about dropping mcnabb for fitzpatrick? romo is my starter.
if dallas falls out of the playoff picture after tonights game, does romo’s value go way down?
thanks again.
Brandon 3:39 pm on October 25, 2010 Permalink |
Romo’s value won’t go way down at any point in the season unless he gets hurt. It’s not like the team packs it up and turns the offense over to the back-up once the team looks like they’re playoff chances are shot. In terms of McNabb and Fitzpatrick though, that’s a tough one. Fitzpatrick is playing out of his mind right now and is definitely worth an add to your team. Anyway you can carry three quarterbacks? Maybe you could drop Louis Murphy for the time being.

I thought you were going to play Donald Driver AND Steve Johnson? Who’d you play instead?
As for the guys you mention, you might as well hang on to them for another week unless there is a hot waiver wire add in your league.
Feel free to drop the Atlanta defense and switch to a defense-of-the-week technique (unless your league penalizes for number of transactions.) Another solid defense in week 8 is Dallas, as you mention. Even Denver could be decent, even if they did just get blown up by Oakland. They play a 49ers team that could be starting David Carr.

hey Brandon,
I ended up going with amendola, driver, roddy. don’t remember why i paniced on johnson. amendola produced decent points so that was a relief.
i just dropped murphy for gettis, a longshot i know, but im weak on WRs still.
The Question now is, do I drop james starks for Dal DEF or def-of-week technique it by dropping ATL def. Do you think ATL’s def is solid from here on out?

Hey brandon,
how can this be with romo?
with mcnabb, but do I drop any of the above guys for kitna, or fitzpatrick now?

Sry, can’t type on phone. Thanks.
Brandon 6:44 am on October 26, 2010 Permalink |
You might drop Tony Romo at this point. I’ve seen estimates as early as 2 games, but more likely he comes back in around 6-8 or something. With the Cowboys season in the tank, I can’t see them rushing him back. He might just be a waste of a roster spot at this point, especially since his numbers weren’t any better than Fitzpatrick’s have been lately!

I love the new design guys!

Thanks man! We’re still working out the kinks, but it’s always good to change things up once in a while.

Fitzpatrick or Sancez as my backup going forward and specifically for week 8 as I have Flacco on a bye. Thanks for the help/
Brandon 8:41 am on October 26, 2010 Permalink |
Right now it seems that Fitzpatrick is the guy you want. The Bills offense seems to be coming together and the passing game is really picking up. Unlike the Jets, the Bills don’t have two great runners to turn to (they have two dynamic backs, who can catch passes though!)
TJ 1:37 am on October 26, 2010 Permalink |
Hernandez or O-Daniels going forward as a backup to Vernon Davis ( may need it soon – David Carr does not look good for VD)
At WR, would you choose any of the ones above (Britt, Bess, Johnson) over Branch, TB Williams, Knox? I have room for 1 more, White is on bye next week and I need to plug someone in to start next to Garcon and for later/playoffs (I have Lloyd, but wondering we’ve just passed the Bronco’s peak and it’s time for their annual meltdown).
Is anyone else happy to see Ray Rice has a bye this week?
Brandon 8:47 am on October 26, 2010 Permalink |
Although I’m a Patriots fan, I think I’m leaning towards Daniels actually for your backup tight end. Hernandez is getting looks and can put up decent yardage, but I think the Texans will actually look for Owen Daniels in the redzone…something New England hasn’t done yet with Hernandez.
At wide receiver, definitely pick up Kenny Britt for Deion Branch. At this point I think I like Steve Johnson over Mike Williams as well, as I have more faith in Ryan Fitzpatrick than Josh Freeman at quarterback and Johnson is on fire!
I like Bess too though, so if you don’t get the other guys, put in a claim for him too.
As for Ray Rice, I’m not very happy with him at the moment. Between benching Darren McFadden and having Chris Johnson and Rice put up crappy performances in games where their team scored tons of points, I lost a match-up I should have won by a mile

Will TB DEF do better this week than Seattle against Oakland?
Also, I have Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie, Greg Jennings, Kenny Britt, Deion Branch and Sidney Rice. Should I start Britt over Johnson, Wayne or Jennings this week? Is there any reason to hold on to Rice or is he just wasting bench space?
Brandon 8:25 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
I like the Tampa Bay defense over Seattle this week. At wide receiver, you might consider starting Britt over Jennings (never thought I’d say that!) as Jennings plays the Jets this week and Antonio Cromartie should have pretty good coverage on him. Keep Wayne and AJ in there though. As for Rice, I’m not expecting a whole lot from him this year. Feel free to drop him for a serviceable WR3 if there’s one available.

You guys jinxed Romo!!
So now that he’s jinxed
I have a QB problem. I want to just DROP Cutler. I have Mark Sanchez and Alex Smith. Does it make sense for me to pick up Jon Kinta ? If so, who should I drop? Cutler ? So for Alex Smith’s season totals are better than Sanchez.
AtlantaJJ 12:30 pm on October 26, 2010 Permalink |
Oh and since we are talking defense of the week. (I like that idea)
I currently own Redskins and Lions. Seattle is looking good and available on the waiver wire. The other available teams are: Dallas, Colts, Browns (bye) and Jacksonville.
The Redskins play the Lions week 8. Who should I pick up,or should I keep the Redskins and Lions. Who should I start. I’m running low on cash so I have to bid low.
AtlantaJJ 7:07 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
Well I had to answer my own question. I dropped the Lions and got Seattle. I also dropped Lance Moore, and picked up Jon Kinta to fill in for Cutler. I’m going to hold on to Cutler for now. If I had a good QB I would be a play off contender. I have Sanchez, Alex Smith, Cutler, and now Kinta.
Brandon 8:22 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
Oops, sorry I didn’t get to this one! I saw it last night but forgot to reply. At quarterback, if you still can, drop Alex Smith and pick up either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Matthew Stafford. As for defense, Seattle should do alright against the Raiders (who definitely won’t score 59 points again.)

The Romo jinx. QBs drop like flies with me as an owner. I would like to offer up a trade in my league and need your help!! Who should I offer up to get either Big Ben or Schaub?…my team
Romo-out
Bradshaw
Lynch
Torain
Mathews
Tolbert
A. Johnson
J.Maclin
M.Crabtree
S. Holmes
D.Thomas
Z. Miller
K
Def
I was going to try for Fitzpatrick as well. I read in an earlier post that dropping Romo should be okay. Still thinking that?
Brandon 8:18 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
Hopefully this isn’t too late, but feel free to drop Romo for Kitna, Fitzpatrick or Stafford at this point. There is talk that he’s done for the season now. As for offering a trade for Roethlisberger or Schaub, it all depends on what the other teams needs are.
JM 10:34 pm on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
Wasn’t too late. Thanks for the input. Now..I grabbed Fitzpatrick but feel I need more QB depth. The guy says he needs rbs and WRs. Not specific but I wan’t to be fair. Who would you offer, from my list, for Schaub?? And also looking to add a WR. Who do you like out of Lee Evans, Davone Bess and Mike Williams(Sea)?
Brandon 8:41 am on October 28, 2010 Permalink |
That’s a tough one, because the only guys that are viable one-for-one with Schaub are some of the best guys you have at each position really (Bradshaw/Torain/Maclin.) I guess you could offer Maclin and replace him with Mike Williams. I like Evans and Williams though, so see if you can scoop them up if you end up trading away some of your receiver depth.

In desperate need of immediate help, so any advice is greatly appreciated
12 team league here’s my lineup
QB:Peyton Manning
QB:John Kitna
WR:Mike Thomas
WR:Deion Branch
RB:Jamaal Charles
RB:Brandon Jackson
TE:Vernon Davis
W/T:Jermaine Gresham
W/R:Steve Johnson
W/R:Dexter McCluster
Bench:
D. Mason WR BAL
D. Jackson WR PHI
S. Holmes WR NYJ
Should I shuffle these at all?
Thinking of trying to get Hasslebeck instead of Kitna, just because he’s a sort of known quantity…
Some notable availables:
L. Blount RB TB
B. White WR IND
D. Brown RB IND
P. Garcon WR IND
M. Floyd WR SD
M. Tolbert RB SD
K. Walter WR HOU
P. Crayton WR SD
Would you recommend any of these moving forward?
Also, any names I should keep an eye out for as far as pickups?
Nero 11:00 pm on October 26, 2010 Permalink |
You better snag up Garcon! What is he doing still available in your league?
Tony 1:51 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
Hah. He’s gone as of this afternoon while I was at work. Typical.
Brandon 8:28 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
I’d start Santonio Holmes over Mike Thomas this week. As for free agents, I like Patrick Crayton for next week or so and would even consider dropping Mike Thomas for him.
Nero 10:59 pm on October 26, 2010 Permalink |
Blair White or Anthony Gonzalez – I got both, but I wanna drop one for Jon Kitna
Brandon 8:17 am on October 27, 2010 Permalink |
Not sure either of these guys is going to have a huge impact in the long term, but since Anthony Gonzalez claims to be healthy, he’s probably the best bet at the moment.
Tony 2:00 am on October 28, 2010 Permalink |
While on the subject of the colts, is Tamme a viable option moving forward?
Brandon 8:36 am on October 28, 2010 Permalink |
Apparently the Colts President, Bill Polian, claims that Tamme can do everything offensively that Dallas Clark could do, so take that for whatever it’s worth. He’s worth a gamble if you’re in a bind this week or want to stash him for later if he turns out alright, but if you have a decent option this week, go with the decent option instead of Tamme.
