Just a note, I’ll be away this weekend running the Maine Marathon (my first marathon!) so after tonight, I won’t be in a position to offer any of my amazing fantasy football advice! I know it’s heartbreaking, but hopefully Matt (along with the other readers) can hold down the fort and lead everyone to a week 4 victory. Good luck in advance!

By the way, if any of our readers also run, check out my personal blog TheRunningBran.com and we can talk running…like how many fantasy points I score for finishing the marathon šŸ™‚

So funny because it’s true. As a Felix Jones owner in two leagues, I laughed at the “running play” part even as it killed me a little bit on the inside. Source: Reddit

    Gaming Google

If you’ve ever run a blog with any kind of significant traffic and a decent Google PageRank, you’ve almost surely encountered them before: Marketing companies who offer to pay you to write a post with a link to a certain website, often on the behalf of surprisingly large and well-established companies. It’sĀ SEO 101: Google’s algorithms are built around reputation and trust, and links are considered an indication of trust. If enough high-PageRank blogs link to a marketer’s website, Google can be duped into ranking it higher for certain search terms.

A link by itself isn’t good enough, though: Google has known from the beginning that people would try to game the system, so over the years they’ve developed increasingly sophisticated means of detecting misleading links. They can still be beaten (in theory at least) if websites Google trusts with a high PageRank are willing to put that trust at risk by cooperating with black-hat marketing types who typically ask the blogger or website owner to post a credible-looking “editorial” along with a strategically-worded link.

Brandon and I have a stock reply for these situations – We don’t mix ads with content, but if you’d like to post a normal ad (identified as such) in the sidebar, let us know. We’re fine with unobtrusive, non-misleading ads, but we think it’s a violation of our readers’ trust to ever post anything that looks like real content but is actually an ad – not to mention that if Google ever caught on, they’d blacklist us in a second.

Which brings us to yesterday, when we were contacted with the following proposition:

User Requested Player Rankings – Week 4

As with last year, instead of automatically ranking every player at every position (like the big sites with the big bucks do :-)), I’ll be ranking all requested players against other requested players. For example, if you have four wide receivers and you’re trying to fill three spots, you just comment with the four names and I’ll rank them against eachother. In essence, this will accomplish the same thing as if you were to scan a complete list of wide receivers for where your four guys rank.

Here’s a link to the Google Doc spreadsheet for those viewing on mobile devices. Anyways, feel free to start submitting names for me to rank! I’ll start the list off with a few guys that were on the list last week.

Just a disclaimer…I’m more likely to put your players on the list faster if you just give me a couple names to compare. When you comment with your entire team, it makes me less likely to get the players listed until the very last minute. (View the rankings after the jump)… (More …)

Sounds like a pretty good deal, as long as you can find some additional depth at wide receiver. I have to image that Chris Johnson’s numbers will go up over the course of the season and if he can return to a top 10 RB, then he and Ray Rice will hold it down for you.

I need to pick up a TE because I can’t trust Gates to play. Who should I drop to make room – D. Henderson, Manningham, or James Stewart in my standard scoring league of 10.

      • Brandon 2:21 pm on September 29, 2011 Permalink | Reply

What’s your depth at RB look like? I’m thinking Stewart is who I’m leaning towards, but Henderson could start losing looks with Marques Colston returning.

        • Shane 3:07 pm on September 29, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have CJ, Turner, Tate, Addai, Ingram and Stewart at RB and Mike Wallace, Maclin, N. Washington, Manningham and Henderson at WR. Not a lot of free agents left at RB in the league. Henderson has had (2) 100 yard games and 2 TD’s and Manningham hasn’t done much on a NYG up and down team but everyone seems to think Manningham has a big upside.

          • Brandon 9:59 am on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Seems like you have some good depth at RB, so maybe drop Stewart. Henderson and Manningham could both turn out to be solid WR3’s this year and you’re more likely to start them than Stewart.

If he ends up being scratched it makes it easy, but if he seems to be complaining still this weekend, you may put Best in there for him. Good luck!

I’ve got Big Ben a couple spots ahead of Campbell this week. While Campbell IS playing the worst pass defense in the league, this seems like as good as any for New England to actually step up with a few big picks. At receiver, I have Brandon Lloyd way ahead of Deion Branch.

Hey Brandon – Interesting question for you…

In my league, which gives 1 point for every 20 return yards, Antonio brown is the #27th WR right now in fantasy points. That’s above Bowe, Nicks, Burleson, Branch, DeSean, etc. etc. Obviously, most of these other guys will pick it up and likely surpass him, but how much weight would you give to his return opportunities? Do teams usually stick with a return man for the season unless they start fumbling? Would you drop any of these for Brown in this league: Mike Thomas, Dexter McCluster, Henderson, Burleson?

      Thanks!

      • Brandon 10:37 am on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I think Antonio Brown will continue to increase his role in the passing game and his numbers could improve. I have no issue with you dropping Mike Thomas or even Nate Burleson for him.

Hey Brandon, it’s me again. I got proposed a trade yesterday, but I don’t feel it is a move I *should* take.

Proposed Trade: Cam Newton and Carnell Williams for LeSean McCoy and Arian Foster.

      My team is:
QB: Jay Cutler, Tarvaris Jackson (keeping in mind this is a 2QB league)
WR: Hakeen Nicks, Nate Burleson, Jordy Nelson, Mario Manningham, Torrey Smith
RB: LeSean McCoy, Beanie Wells, Bernard Scott, Arian Foster
      TE: Jermichael Finley, Ed Dickson
      K: Mason Crosby
      D: Detroit

      His team is:
QB: Cam Newton, Michael Vick, Matt Ryan
WR: Greg Jennings, Chad Ochocinco, Denarius Moore, Devin Hester, Mike Sims-Walker
RB: Jahvid Best, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Carnell Williams, Knowshon Moreno, Danny Woodhead
      TE: Jason Witten,
      K: Robbie Gould
      D: NY Giants

I feel that I am giving up a lot more than he is offering. What would you consider an “attractable” counter-offer. I realize that I do NEED a (much much much) better QB2, but I don’t know if it is worth giving up the #4 and #13 RB for Cam and an non-top20 RB in Carnell (who was limited in practice due to health issues).

As always, any help is GREATLY appreciated!

      • Brandon 11:50 am on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Definitely do NOT take that trade as is. You’re giving up two potentially top 10 RB’s for an overachieving rookie QB and a backup RB. I guess it depends on who he values the most of his quarterbacks. Is Newton the one you can get the easiest? Can you get Matt Ryan for cheaper? Also, I would try to package Mario Manningham in the deal too to sweeten it, with maybe Sims-Walker in return. That way you break up your Giants receiver duo. If Cam Newton is the easiest to get, maybe something like this:

Arian Foster, Mario Manningham for Cam Newton and Sims-walker? You could replace Foster with McCoy I guess, but I’d recommend you hang onto him if you can. Either way, you shouldn’t give up one of your starting RB’s + more for Newton who’s value is pretty high still.

    • Neil 11:59 am on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I could actually prolly get Ryan for cheaper. He starts Newton, and has Ryan on the Bench. Should I attempt a Ryan, Walker for Foster, Manningham, or is that too “generous” for Ryan?

You might hang on to what you have for a few more weeks. See if Arian Foster can build up some good numbers then possibly trade him straight up for a good QB…maybe to some other team if necessary. Can you stay put with Tarvaris Jackson for a few weeks?

You still didn’t put up Santana Moss..

    • flippy flop 4:23 pm on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Why would you play Henderson over Meachem? I have em both. But I’m playing Moss, Decker, and can’t decide over the two New Orleans WR’s..

      • Brandon 9:41 pm on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’m worried that Marques Colston steals some looks from Robert Meachem, but Henderson is the deep threat extraordinaire and he should still get his 60 yard bombs. Good luck!

Why are you picking Phillips over Stafford? For three weeks I have benched Stafford and he has done better than Phillips each time? Was planning on going with Stafford this week. Good luck with your run!

Sorry I meant Phillip Rivers and Mathew Stafford^

Thanks man. You actually convinced me. Philip Rivers is a little banged up too this week so I flipped them. At some point Rivers should return to form though and I’ll be there to rank him high! šŸ™‚

Trade question I’m hurting at wr, thinking of trading j best and Lloyd for Steve smith (car) and burleson, i only need to play two rb’s and have forte, mccoy, best, mccluster , and sproles in a ppr league, am I giving up too much for smith ?

      • Shane 1:53 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Yes, you are giving up too much for smith. try going after a top tier WR. Fitzgerald or Roddy or Jennings. Sit on Jahvid through the next two weeks and see if he has a great game. he might be enough value to trade straight up for on of those guys to the right buyer.

First time on this site, glad I found it. I need some help this week, 14 team league, PPR. I’ve had injuries left and right so I have some tough choices this week.

Go with Big Ben playing New England or chance it with Jason Campbell who’s playing Houston?

Then, I usually go with 3 running backs and 2 receivers. With five spots open, out of this list list who should I go with?
Mccoy (obviously he gets a spot)
      Gore
      Tolbert
      LaDamien Tomlinson
      Colston
      Deion Branch
      Devin Hester
      Steve Smith (phi)
      Mohamed Masaquoi

(I have Austin and had Britt but we know what happened to them)

      Thank you so much!

      • Matt 5:06 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Big Ben without a doubt – New England has serious issues in its secondary so any decent QB is a great fantasy start against them, especially since the Pats offense is still so potent. They’re going to be in a shootout every week.

Keep an eye on Gore’s status pre-game and get him in there if there aren’t any red flags. Tolbert’s probably not a great start given the positive trend in the news about Mathews. Colston is a very shaky start with Payton saying he plans to limit him.

I’d start McCoy, Gore (assuming he’s ok), Branch, Smith and Tomlinson.

        • Jared 6:21 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

My mistake, big ben is playing Houston and Campbell’s playing New England.

    • Jared 5:14 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Thanks. You think Steve Smith (Philly) will start seeing more action? I had picked him up in case Maclin didn’t play cus of the hamstring, but news says he’s likely playing…

who do you like better ryan mathews or denarious moore this week as a flex play. Considering ryan mathews has been injured and moore faces a weak patriots secondary

Any of our readers using Pickemfirst? I might be able to hook you up with a free upgrade to their PRO version if you ask nicely! (Check back next month for some more free upgrades! šŸ™‚

To those who have never seen it in use, here is what it looks like when you run Pickemfirst while looking at our waiver wire spreadsheet. The green means the player is available in one of your leagues. Blue means he’s on one of your teams. Gray means he’s taken in all of your leagues. The red star is new and means that there is an update or recommendation for the player.

I’ve been using it since last season and it has changed the way I read blogs and news updates! It’s really fantastic.

The only thing that bothers me is I can’t seem to get it to auto-load. I need to click the button and then select NFL in order for it to process a newly opened page.

What’s different in the Pro version? I’d love to check it out!

      Thanks

Hey Brandon, thanks for the help so far, you’ve been awesome.

I have two pending trade offers from the same player:

      1.
      Send LeSean McCoy, Phi RB
      Send DeAngelo Williams, Car RB
      Receive Reggie Wayne, Ind WR
      Receive Packers D/ST, GB D/ST

      2.
      Send Fred Jackson, Buf RB
      Send LeSean McCoy, Phi RB
      Receive Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buf QB
      Receive Beanie Wells, Ari RB
      Receive Reggie Wayne, Ind WR
      Receive Packers D/ST, GB D/ST

My defense is kinda lacking, have the Chargers, but Jackson and McCoy are my top scorers, so my gut instinct tells me to decline both trades. What do you think?

      • Brandon 1:35 pm on September 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’d decline. Can’t you just pick up a decent defense off free agency, like Tampa Bay (playing the Colts this week) or something?

      At RB: S.Jackson B.Tate F.Jones M.Ingram or B.Scott.
      At WR: W.Welker S.Johnson E.Decker S.Rice P.Harvin.

Have to start 2 WRs and 2RBs and 1 flex play.

    • Chris 3:44 pm on September 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

What do you make of this whole Chris Johnson thing? Is he going to eventually get it going? I just got offered him and Dez Bryant for DeSean Jackson and Santonio Holmes. We play 2 WR, 2 RB, and a flex. It would leave me with AP, Chris Johnson, Fred Jackson, Tim Hightower at RB. Then Steve Smith (Car), Dez Bryant, Deion Branch, and Antonio Brown as my wideouts.

I can’t see a reason not to do this…unless the whole CJ thing is for real.

      • Brandon 10:49 am on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have to believe that Chris Johnson will improve and he claims that he’s “finally in game shape”…even though I’m pretty sure that’s just him trying to excuse himself for his crappy play in previous weeks. This trade looks pretty good for you too, especially once Dez Bryant is finally healthy. You’ll be stacked at RB and won’t be able to play them all each week though…so sometimes there’s too much of a good thing šŸ™‚ You could always get CJ, wait until he has a good game or two, then spin him off for an awesome receiver like Larry Fitzgerald or Wes Welker or something!
