User Requested Player Rankings – Week 1

As with last year, instead of automatically ranking every player at every position (like the big sites with the big bucks do :-)), I’ll be ranking all requested players against other requested players. For example, if you have four wide receivers and you’re trying to fill three spots, you just comment with the four names and I’ll rank them against eachother. In essence, this will accomplish the same thing as if you were to scan a complete list of wide receivers for where your four guys rank. Anyways, feel free to start submitting names for me to rank for week one of the 2011-12 season! I’ll start the list off with a few guys on my own teams (after the jump)… (More …)

I’m nervous about Austin/F. Jones going up against the JETS
      Need to fill 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 RB/WR from the following…
      Mendenhall, Felix Jones, Hightower, Tolbert
Miles Austin, Roddy White, Kenny Britt

      • Brandon 2:34 pm on September 7, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Just put those guys on there. As for your starters, go Mendenhall, Hightower, White, Britt and gamble with Felix Jones in the flex spot. You got some tough match-ups there though!

    • Barry 2:48 pm on September 7, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      Two dilemmas in a PPR:
One WR/TE between : Antonio Gates, Mike A. Williams, Mario Manningham
One RB between : Felix Jones, Ryan Mathews, Tim Hightower

      • Brandon 3:15 pm on September 7, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’d probably go with Antonio Gates and Tim Hightower. On any other week, I’d pick Felix Jones over Hightower, but the Jets match-up scares me. As for the WR/TE spot, you have some great options, but Gates is most likely to find the endzone. Who are your starters other than these guys?

        • Barry 3:45 pm on September 7, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have LeSean McCoy for my other RB spot
Roddy White + Larry Fitzgerald for my two other WR/TE spots…
(don’t be fooled, it is a keeper league so I already had LeSean before drafting… RWhite&Fitz were my 1st and 2nd rnd picks…)
And Tony Romo as my QB

          • Barry 3:47 pm on September 7, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Mike A. Williams was also one of my keeper… Don’t you think Jets Defense might be down a little bit this year with Shaun Ellis departure…?

I agree with Kate. I don’t see them dropping off all that much, at least in terms of stopping the run and shutting down top receivers.

Just put them on there. Got Roddy and Britt as your two wide outs, but it’s only by a hair with Britt. As for the running backs, I got MJD and Greene. Good luck!

whats your reasoning for Britt over Dez? I fear rust and lack of training camp will slow britt down to start the year??

          • Brandon 3:40 pm on September 7, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Mostly based on how good the Jets cornerbacks are. Maybe Revis covers Miles Austin and Dez gets open a couple times against Cromartie, but if Revis covers Dez, then it could be tough going. Even with some soreness, I figure Britt is the primary target in the Titans passing game and the Jags don’t figure to be great against the pass.

Although ESPN’s Matthew Berry thinks Bryant will have a great game and Britt will struggle (the other guys agree with me.) Just to make things more clear for you 🙂

      Moreno or Bradshaw?

      • Brandon 10:10 am on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Got Colston ahead of Bryant by a few spots, but both have terrible match-ups. At running back, both guys have pretty good match-ups actually, but I’m leaning towards Moreno at the moment. We’ll learn how much the team plans to use Willis McGahee in this first game, so that could affect how you pick them after week 1.

      • Brandon 9:25 am on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’d gamble on Reggie Bush. It’ll be interesting to see how the team uses him and you don’t want to miss out if he has a huge game in his debut. Especially go with Bush if your league is PPR.

      James Starks or Michael Bush

      • Brandon 9:30 am on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

It’s close…and I hate playing guys in Thursday games, but I give the edge to Starks. However, with the Broncos defense being so bad against the run last year and Bush playing late Monday night, I’d probably still go with Bush if it were my team 🙂

      Hey Brandon!

I am having trouble with my flex position: I have Moss, Collie, Bess, Branch, or LD (Tomlinson) to play in this spot. Who do you vote for????

      • Brandon 2:32 pm on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Hey Natalie, I’m voting for Santana Moss, although it’s close between he and LT. I’m still curious how much impact LT will have at this point, while Moss should get plenty of looks.

        • Natalie 8:52 pm on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

That’s so funny Brandon! I moved Moss in my flex spot over LD right before I posted this question! You know what they say about great minds! 🙂

          • Brandon 11:15 am on September 12, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Looking at LT’s rushing numbers, you’d think we made the right decision…but then he almost caught for as many yards as Moss. Similar numbers though, so hard to complain!

Need 2 RB , 2 WR and 1 flex, R. Rice, Blount, BJGE, Britt, V. Jackson and Manningham. .5 ppr

      • Brandon 9:46 am on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have to respectfully disagree slightly with Natalie below. I like Rice and Blount at RB, V-Jax and Manningham at WR, then BenJarvus Green-Ellis as the flex. Britt is still nursing an injury that gives me reason for concern. If he comes out with a huge game this week though, you might have to start playing him as your flex.

        • Natalie 8:57 pm on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

We’ll see, but I think Britt will get most of the receptions in Tennessee. Forgot about his injury though so you never know. Last year I benched him the week he went nuts and scored major fantasy points.

I hope you listened to me and played Britt! Sorry Brandon, I had to rub it in a little! 🙂

            • Brandon 11:16 am on September 12, 2011 Permalink

Hah, you win this round 🙂 Britt had a pretty strange game, scoring on a huge bomb and a really short pass. Without that bomb his numbers are pretty pedestrian…but you have to count the bomb!

Who would u go with?…F. Jones, Hightower or B. Jacobs?? I need 1 to pair with J. Charles.

      • Brandon 9:45 am on September 8, 2011 Permalink | Reply

On most weeks, I’m thinking you’ll want to go with Felix Jones, but for this week I’d go with Tim Hightower. Felix’ match-up isn’t great against the Jets. Jacobs would be an interesting play, but we need to see how the split with Ahmad Bradshaw goes.

Wow, that’s a pretty solid squad you got there. You might consider packaging up some of that wide receiver depth for a top tier WR or another flight RB.

              hmm any suggestions?

          • Brandon 3:30 pm on September 9, 2011 Permalink | Reply

If someone likes Benson in your league, you could package him with Brandon Lloyd (who I see dropping off a bit this year) for someone like Darren McFadden maybe? If the guys with the top WR in the league are shallow at the position, maybe you can pull off some crazy Brandon Lloyd + Santana Moss for Larry Fitzgerald trade or something. Just spit-ballin’ here…

Need suggestion for my flex position. The other positions I have filled are:
QB: Rivers WR: Jennings WR: Manningham RB: Ray Rice RB: McFadden TE: Owen Daniels D: Patrick Willis/ Jon Beason Defense: Browns

For my flex: I have to choose between Jonathan Stewart, Dez Bryant, Mercedes Lewis, Plaxico Burress, and Benjarvus Green-Ellis

      Thanks for any help!

      • Brandon 12:53 pm on September 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’d probably go BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who’s most likely to find the endzone out of the crew. Everyone except Marcedes Lewis is pretty decent though. Good luck with whoever your roll with though!

I am interested in your opinions on the following:

      WR: Julio Jones
      TE: Rob Gronkowski, Marcedes Lewis
      D/ST: Arizona Cardinals

      Thanks in advance!

Moss, Matthews, or Jacobs in a full ppr

        • Brandon 12:55 pm on September 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Tough one there. They all have big upside, but I might roll the dice on Santana Moss and hope he catches 10 passes.

I have Charles at RB1, but I need to choose between starting Steven Jackson or Matt Forte for RB2 this week. 10 team 1.5 ppr league. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Tough one there. I’d roll with Steven Jackson this week and hope the Rams can keep the score close and run the ball a lot.

So I have fellix jones in my rb2 with AP in my rb1…should I change out jones for mcgahee? Also. Have Dez manningham and amendola…should I change any of them for burelson?

      • Brandon 12:49 pm on September 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Keep in Felix Jones. Amendola is the only guy that I’d consider switching for Burleson, but if it’s PPR, keep Amendola. Good luck!

McGahee on bench. Dez and Felix are in. Should I sub one for Willis?

so I have crabtree on my bench. Is McCluster worth replacing him with or should i go for Fred Davis or Greg Olsen? i only have witten and i am going to need a backup when he has his bye.

WR2, .20 PPR: Reggie Wayne or Santana Moss?

      • Brandon 12:48 pm on September 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Seems crazy, but I’d have to go Santana Moss until we know what Kerry Collins can do and how it affects Wayne. Good luck!

Who should I start at flex for week 1? Thomas Jones, Danny Woodhead, or Hines Ward?

      • Brandon 12:51 pm on September 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

It’s a toss up between Hines Ward and Danny Woodhead. I might go Woodhead since I’m a Patriots homer. He can score on screens and rushes, so probably your best bet to find the endzone.

    Touchdown number normalization

I was just reviewing the stats from last year, looking at which players at each position led the league in touchdowns and it got me thinking about the likelihood of those players repeating this year. Will Arian Foster rack up 18 touchdowns again? Unlikely. How about Marcedes Lewis to score another 10? Doubtful. Anyways, here is a list of guys most likely to disappoint this year if you’re counting on them to score as many times as they did last season (as well as some guys who could/should actually improve!) Keep this in mind if you’re in a touchdown-heavy scoring league or if you’re basing your draft strategy solely on fantasy points from last season.

    Quarterbacks

    • Peyton Manning (33) – Injury worries
    • Eli Manning (31) – No more Steve Smith or Kevin Boss
    • Matt Cassel (27) – Just not confident that he can repeat, but he could prove me wrong

Guy that will improve: Tony Romo (11), Matthew Stafford (7), Kevin Kolb (7)
Guys that could improve: Philip Rivers (30), Matt Ryan (28)

    Running Backs

    • Arian Foster (18) – Very few running backs ever repeat this kind of touchdown numbers.
    • BenJarvus Green-Ellis (13) – Other backs and tight ends always a threat to cut into this number.
    • Peyton Hillis (13) – Madden curse? Just pessimistic that he puts up numbers again.
    • Mike Tolbert (11) – I see the touchdowns spreading out a bit more across the entire offense (V-Jax, Mathews, Gates, etc)

Guys that will improve: Ray Rice (6), Shonn Greene (2), Felix Jones (2), DeAngelo Williams (1)
Guys that should improve: Jamaal Charles (8), Maurice Jones-Drew (7), Steven Jackson (6), Frank Gore (5)

    Wide Receivers

    • Dwayne Bowe (15) – Expecting a drop along with the touchdowns his quarterback throws.
    • Greg Jennings (12) – Jermichael Finley should cut into this total.
    • Brandon Lloyd (11) – Not trusting Kyle Orton OR Lloyd to repeat last year’s performance.
    • Stevie Johnson (10) – Seems like a one time thing to me (plus, he plays for the Bills!)
    • Kenny Britt (9) – Should do well with Matt Hasselbeck at the helm, but take away his out-of-character, week 7 game last year and his stats normalize a bit.
    • T.O. (9) – Maybe because he’s not even on a team?

Guys that will improve: Vincent Jackson (3),
Guys that should improve: Larry Fitzgerald (6), Brandon Marshall (3)

    Tight Ends

    • Marcedes Lewis (10) – He was already on this list BEFORE the team cut David Garrard 🙂

Guys that will improve: Dallas Clark (3), Owen Daniels (2), Jermichael Finley (1)

    Brandon’s 2011 fantasy football teams

Just felt like showing off my fantasy football teams for this season, along with a couple of notes based on the similarities and differences between the leagues.

    • Got Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez on all four teams. He has great upside and could easily be the best receiver on the Patriots this year…and he doesn’t cost anything! You can grab a starting tight end earlier in the draft, such as Owen Daniels (who I got in multiple leagues), and still get Hernandez towards the end in case he has a huge year.
    • I never had the courage to draft a top tier quarterback. With a shallow running back and wide receiver class this year, it seemed more important to solidify those positions and then just grab two (or three?) quarterbacks that can be rotated in based on match-ups. It seems I went RB-RB-WR or RB-WR-RB in all of my leagues to start the drafts.
    • Based on them being on more than one of my team’s this year, some of the players I’m high on (and see good value in) are: Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Ray Rice, Steven Jackson, Frank Gore, Mario Manningham, Wes Welker, Owen Daniels, Jacoby Ford, Aaron Hernandez, DeAngelo Williams and the New England defense.
    • This year Yahoo has Toyota as one of their sponsors and in each league, they award the Toyota best drafted team (or something.) My Beer league team was the only one to win this prize, but one out of four isn’t bad I guess!
    • I wanted to pick my favorite team out of the bunch, but I actually really like all of my teams this year and expect big things from them.
    • My public league team is pretty stacked, but the scoring is wacky, so who knows how good it’ll end up doing!
