The Wire – Week 4: Ryan Torain’s tower is higher than Hightower’s?

This season I’ve continued to tweak the format of the waiver wire list, so pay attention! I’ve organized it by position now, since that probably makes more sense when you’re trying to fill a particular position. In terms of the color coding, green is guys to target, yellow is guys to wait on (except in deeper leagues) and red is one-hit-wonders.

Here is the waiver wire advice for this week in Google Doc spreadsheet format if that’s the way you prefer to digest it.

By the way, how about that awesome post title?! Probably the only one on the internet to use that one.

      Hey Brandon,

Think it’s worth swapping in Antonio Brown, J Nelson or Cruz for any of these: Washington, D Nelson, D Moore, or Holmes (who I may never start again?).

Also – who would you rather keep : Ridley or Ingram?

      • Brandon 4:37 pm on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

What do you mean by swapping in? Picking up off the waiver wire or just starting them this week?

        • TJ 5:53 pm on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Waivers – currently have Ingram & Best on bench, need to play one to cover wk 5 bye

Brown, J-Nel & Cruz still out on waivers. Didn’t move fast enough to grab Decker. Leaning towards dropping Nelson…. what do you think?

          • Schrodinger's Cat 5:09 am on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Don’t drop J. Nordy. I would definately pick up Nate Washingtor and maybe drop Victor Cruz for him. Denarius Moore still hasn’t put up big enough number to make drops for him yet.

            • TJ 9:54 am on October 5, 2011 Permalink

My current WRs: Megatron, Washington, Holmes, D Moore, & Antonio Brown. Start 2, STD scoring, but counts return yards, so Brown is averaging around 14pts/game here.

So drop D Moore for Jordy ?

            • Schrodinger's Cat 3:24 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink

I think what you have now is good. I wouldn’t drop Denarius yet. Jordy is a great pick up but he splits targets with Jennings and Finley. So as far as week 5 goes.. I’d keep what you have and maybe pickup Nelson later.

      • Brandon 3:41 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’d scoop up Jordy Nelson and Victor Cruz at the expense of David Nelson and Denarius Moore. There’s always going to be these low level WR’s on free agency and when they have a big game, they’ll get scooped up 🙂 I like Nelson and Cruz’s upsides more than the others at the moment though.

Need Advice.Hey what should I give up for blount or Fred Jackson or both.

      I have:
      RB:S.Jackson F.Jones M.Ingram B.Tate B.Scott
      WR: W.Welker S.Johnson E.Decker S.Rice P.Harvin L.Hawkins
      TE: T.Gonzalez
      D/ST: Lions Bears
      K: J.Hanson

      • Brandon 3:26 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

What should you give up? Depends on what the other people need I guess. If you could get it, nearly every player on your team would be good one-for-one except Wes Welker. Steven Jackson probably isn’t worth giving up as he is nearly equal to Blount and Jackson. Maybe there is still an Ingram believer who you can package him with Percy Harvin or something for? You may have to improve it though. Decker and Felix Jones is probably something the other guys would consider, but I’d aim for Fred Jackson with that one.

I haven’t fully hitched my wagon to the Stevan Ridley wagon quite yet, but if you can pick him up without dropping Tim Hightower that would be ideal. Both backs will likely end up in some type of rotation where they have to make the most out of limited carries, but Hightower is only behind Ryan Torain, a guy who has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. Ridley will split carries with BJGE all year.

      Need HELP.

I’m 0-4 in my league and feeling like I should make some drastic changes. I thought I had a pretty good lineup, but I keep losing by narrow margins.

      Here’s my lineup:
Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, MJD, Stephen Jackson, Darren Sproles (flex), Jordy Nelson, Brandon Lloyd, Mike Thomas, Owen Daniels.
BENCH- Joe Flacco, Johnny Knox, Fred Davis, Plaxico Burress, James Starks

I’m thinking I need to trade Joe Flacco for a decent (better) WR or RB. Any thoughts? What would be a fair trade?

      • Brandon 3:33 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Not sure exactly what kind of upgrade you’ll get for Flacco at this point unless you have some Ravens fans in your league. That looks like a pretty decent team you have and not sure how you’re 0-4! Maybe you can make some kind package with Flacco/Starks/Nelson or something to upgrade RB or WR. Just keep in mind that you’ll want a backup QB that doesn’t share a bye week with your two guys so you have someone to plug in.

Self-Rant: I HATE myself every Sunday for drafting Mike Williams (TB) over Wes Welker.

      • Brandon 3:33 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Not to rub it in or anything, but I’m glad I didn’t do that in any of my leagues 🙂

    • Jake 12:37 am on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have a 2QB league and one of them has a bye this week. I am absolutely stacked at RB (Foster, MJD, FJax, Best, Starks, Bush, Barber…don’t have much in the WR dept. though) and i am trying to make a trade for Andy Dalton.

Anyone have any advice on what to do from here? Guy said he would give me Dalton for Best, and i do really need a QB…

      • Brandon 3:37 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

All you need is a guy to fill in for your bye weeks right? There aren’t any starters available in free agency? You probably don’t even play Best though, so if you really need a QB I guess there are worse options out there than Dalton…just not that many 🙂

        • Jake 3:41 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, all i need is to fill out two bye weeks…I was offered Sanchez too from someone else (for FJax), but his bye is the same as my second QB, so it would be useless trading for one bye week for him.

There are no starters left as free agents, even the back-ups for back-ups are scooped up instantly. You are ABSOLUTELY right though, I will rarely start Best now unless there are injuries or byes, so…your advice was GREATLY appreciated my good sir.

          • Brandon 3:43 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Do it up. At least Dalton has job security as long as he can stay healthy.

Should I start Fred Jackson and Ryan Mathews, or Ahmad Bradshaw or Darren Sproles?

I’ll have those guys added to our player rankings shortly.

I have Roddy White, Wes Welker, and Miles Austin, I have Ben Roethlisberger as my no. 1 QB. My brother in law has Cam Newton and Tony Romo at QB, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin, and Denarius Moore as WR’s. Do you think he would take White and Big Ben for Denarius Moore and Tony Romo? It seems like a good move for both of us, problem is he’s a huge Tony Romo fan and hates Big Ben, but he starts Cam Newton every week.

it is a 1 qb league by the way, with 1 rb, 2 wrs, no flex

By the way, if you’re currently a Tim Hightower owner in distress over the re-emergence of Ryan Torain, I don’t want to say I told you so, but…

    • Chris 10:08 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

So what are your guys’ thoughts on Torain? I’m a Hightower owner and we bid on Free Agents. I’m thinking I have to go with a large bid on him just to protect myself.

      • Matt 10:38 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

If Torain can stay healthy he’s easily the most talented guy in the Redskins backfield, and given that Shanahan is capable of working wonders with even middling RB talent (true fact: Reuben Droughns currently coaches a football team in Serbia), he could be in line for a big season.

    • Brandon 10:12 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Interestingly enough, I posted just last week on Twitter how I wish I had drafted Hightower in any of my leagues. Now I’m glad I didn’t! How the turntables have…turned.

I had to fish Helu off the WW now I have to get Torain because I’m stuck with Hightower. Never again will I draft a Redskins RB. Rookie mistake!! gah!

I’m currently working on the waiver wire suggestions for this week, so feel free to eavesdrop as I work! 🙂

I’m letting you work, Brandon – but who’s the better BYE week waiver pickup? Steven Ridley or Issac Redman (or someone better?).
I have Rice, Steven Jax, and Felix Jones on BYEs. I’m gonna start Brandon Jacobs – he’s serviceable.

The screenshot below is from the keeper league I’ve commished for several years (what is it now, Brandon? Six? Seven?). I loved my team in this league before the season and saw it as a playoff lock. But after losing 193-178 this week (the next-highest score in the league was 148, and my score was the fourth-highest that any team has put up so far this season) I’m the only remaining winless team. Brandon’s at the top of the standings with a whopping 42 more points than my team. I still think my team is strong enough to sneak into the playoffs and do some damage, but now I’m going to need some extra luck to make that happen.

There are points/standings imbalances like this in most leagues, but it’s usually not quite this bad.

That sucks bro. You’ve scored a crap load of points so don’t do anything hasty with your roster just yet. Obviously you’ve got Mike Tolbert on your squad so you know what your doing. It won’t take a lot to get into the top 8 and into the playoffs. You’ve got another 9 games to go, and you’ll only need to be 6-3 to make it. You’ve hit the hardest part of your schedule early. You’ll be fine.

I’m just fooling around man, I really do agree that 0-4 is no time to panic. I kept Vick and Hillis from last season and added Ray Rice, Matt Forte, Beanie Wells and Dwayne Bowe (among others), so this is a team that could easily go on a run (which is of course why I liked it so much before the season started).

    • Patrick 11:39 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

That’s pretty good. But Bowe is a total liability.

      • Matt 11:41 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, my receivers are a little weak… haven’t gotten much out of Percy Harvin either. But the potential is there. Vick’s health will be a major determining factor, though I did keep Matt Ryan as my backup and you could certainly do worse than him.
