By the way, if you’re currently a Tim Hightower owner in distress over the re-emergence of Ryan Torain, I don’t want to say I told you so, but…

So what are your guys’ thoughts on Torain? I’m a Hightower owner and we bid on Free Agents. I’m thinking I have to go with a large bid on him just to protect myself.

      • Matt 10:38 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

If Torain can stay healthy he’s easily the most talented guy in the Redskins backfield, and given that Shanahan is capable of working wonders with even middling RB talent (true fact: Reuben Droughns currently coaches a football team in Serbia), he could be in line for a big season.

Interestingly enough, I posted just last week on Twitter how I wish I had drafted Hightower in any of my leagues. Now I’m glad I didn’t! How the turntables have…turned.

The screenshot below is from the keeper league I’ve commished for several years (what is it now, Brandon? Six? Seven?). I loved my team in this league before the season and saw it as a playoff lock. But after losing 193-178 this week (the next-highest score in the league was 148, and my score was the fourth-highest that any team has put up so far this season) I’m the only remaining winless team. Brandon’s at the top of the standings with a whopping 42 more points than my team. I still think my team is strong enough to sneak into the playoffs and do some damage, but now I’m going to need some extra luck to make that happen.

There are points/standings imbalances like this in most leagues, but it’s usually not quite this bad.

That sucks bro. You’ve scored a crap load of points so don’t do anything hasty with your roster just yet. Obviously you’ve got Mike Tolbert on your squad so you know what your doing. It won’t take a lot to get into the top 8 and into the playoffs. You’ve got another 9 games to go, and you’ll only need to be 6-3 to make it. You’ve hit the hardest part of your schedule early. You’ll be fine.

I’m just fooling around man, I really do agree that 0-4 is no time to panic. I kept Vick and Hillis from last season and added Ray Rice, Matt Forte, Beanie Wells and Dwayne Bowe (among others), so this is a team that could easily go on a run (which is of course why I liked it so much before the season started).

    • Patrick 11:39 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

That’s pretty good. But Bowe is a total liability.

      • Matt 11:41 am on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, my receivers are a little weak… haven’t gotten much out of Percy Harvin either. But the potential is there. Vick’s health will be a major determining factor, though I did keep Matt Ryan as my backup and you could certainly do worse than him.

Hey Matt. I want your take on this situation I have going on. In a 2QB-12 team league, so every starting QB is on someone’s team. Me, I got stuck with Jay Cutler and Tarvaris Jackson (thanks to autodraft). There is a guy in my league who is looking to trade Cam Newton. He proposed an absolutely preposterous trade offer middle of last week. (Cam and Carnell Williams for LeSean McCoy and Arian Foster). Well it appears he is getting on the desperate side to get some RBs or WRs (based on the msg he just posted in our league). What do you think would be a fair and attractive offer?

My Team: Hakeem Nicks, Torey Smith, Mario Manningham, Jordy Nelson, Nate Burleson, Eric Decker, Arian Foster, LeSean McCoy, Beanie Wells, Bernard Scott, James Casey, Jay Cutler, Tarvaris Jackson, DET def, Jermichael Finley, Mason Crosby.

His Team: Michael Vick, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Greg Jennings, Chad Ochocinco, Javhid Best, BJGE, Jason Witten, Denarius Moore, Mike Sims-Walker, Devin Hester, Carnell Williams, Knowshon Moreno, Danny Woodhead, Roubie Gould, NYG def.

Also, what do you think about getting rid of Scott and picking up either Stewart or Reggie Bush?

(I am still new to what makes trades attractive this being my Rookie year and all, so any help is appreciated. And my QB situation is really killing me. Now 0-4 on the season. One tip I did get from Brandon was to try splitting up the Giants WR duo by looking to swap Manningham and Sims-Walker. I am interest in hear your take on this.)

      • Matt 12:27 pm on October 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Based on what this guy apparently thinks Cam Newton is worth, I think you’re wasting your time trying to make a deal with him. Is he starting Newton over Vick?

I’d drop Scott for Stewart – he’s an OK plug-in start now whereas Scott is really just a Benson handcuff.

I agree, you have to make a move at QB. You’re positively stacked at RB so that’s where I’d focus on making a move. Try and work a 2-for-2 deal where you improve at QB and lose some RB value… something like McCoy and Cutler for Drew Brees and Shonn Greene… obviously that’s just an example off the top of my head but you get the idea.

        • Neil 6:40 pm on October 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

He is not starting Cam over Matt Ryan or Vick. This is what I am thinking. There is another person who is showing interest in Cam this week, and unfortunately, no one else is willing to trade a QB at this time. (at least not without me giving up more than I would like to).

Here are the two trade scenarios i have come up with. Which do you think is more reasonable?

Cam and Mike Sims-Walker for McCoy and Manningham
          -or-
Cam and Moore for McCoy and Manningham

Hey Matt I have a question. I have Hillis, Bradshaw, and Wells as my 3 RB’s in my league, can only have 3, 2 start 1 sits. Hillis has burned me pretty bad, but Bradshaw and Wells have been pretty decent for a RB2 option with their TD’s being the saving grace. But Matthews is out there, nobody has picked him up yet, should I drop one of my RB’s and pick up Matthews, or just keep the 3 I have? The thing that worries me is that Bradshaw is splitting carries with Jacobs, and Jacobs gets the short yardage TD runs that really hurt Bradshaw’s TD’s in fantasy. Hillis has been on and off since the season started, and Wells is showing up pretty big this year. So what do you think I should do?

      • Matt 3:54 pm on October 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I think Ryan Mathews actually has the highest upside of any of these four, so absolutely you should pick him up. The only hard thing to decide on is who to drop. I’d drop Bradshaw because he gets the fewest carries.

        • ManningFan 3:56 pm on October 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

So you think Hillis will eventually turn it around? He’s been splitting 50/50 lately.

Would I be jumping the gun picking up Curtis Painter after his competent debut tonight? My QB situation is absolutely killing me. I have Big Ben and Cutler. Frankly I don’t see either surviving the whole season behind those lines, and even if they do, they’re doing virtually nothing for me.

I know most of Painter’s points this week came on a pair of home run plays by Garçon, so I’d have very tempered expectations, but with the weapons on that offense is it unreasonable to think he has the best upside available on the average wire and a better option than Cutler going forward?

      • Matt 4:49 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Wow, that’s a unique setup. Keep an eye on the Ryan Mathews injury situation; he practiced fully on Friday so at this point it looks like he’ll get most of the carries but if things change there then Tolbert is an excellent start. Steven Jackson should be in your lineup. Denario Alexander should not. Decker’s a sneaky start, high-risk but if he pays off you’ve got some bragging rights for starting him. Love Sproles this year as he continues to put Reggie Bush’s memory to shame.

If Mathews is healthy then I think you should go with SJax, Dez, Decker and Sproles. If not, sub in Tolbert for either Decker or Sproles.

Take it from a Bills fan – Chandler is clearly Fitzpatrick’s top red-zone option. He doesn’t do much else, but at the TE position in fantasy football, touchdowns are golden. Start Mathews, Turner, Washington, Holmes, Nelson.

        • james hance 9:02 pm on October 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

i humbly disagree, stevie johnson is the top red zone option die hard bills fan here, take it from me

    • Culver 4:56 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Here’s my situation. I have CJ2K and a second-tier QB in Big Ben. Behind Johnson I have some decently consistent but unspectacular RBs who are unlikely to put up big numbers. Because of that, I’m sitting at 0-3 and the only way I’m likely to win any games until Johnson pulls himself together is with high-risk, high-reward WR plays hoping one hits me a home run.

My WRs: Greg Jennings, Reggie Wayne, Sidney Rice, Jacoby Ford, Devrey Henderson, Eric Decker (2WR, 1RB/WR flex league)

Jennings is locked in at WR1. My question is, would I be crazy to bench Wayne and start both Decker and Ford (assuming Ford plays) with the hopes that shootouts against GB and NE respectively lead to one or both of them having monster days?

      • Matt 5:33 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Reggie Wayne is one of the bleakest stories in fantasy football this year – there’s just not much reason to hope he’ll ever be an elite option this season. I’m confused as to why you’re not automatically starting Rice at WR2 – he’s hot right now and that alone makes him a stronger start than anyone other WR on your roster besides Jennings. Decker and Ford are both huge-risk plays with significant upside.

        • Culver 6:29 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I wanted to give Rice another week to prove his first game back from injury wasn’t a fluke. I like him, but I just have a hard time imagining anyone on that offense rising above the level of serviceable, you know? If Chris Johnson were performing well, I would start Jennings/Rice for the consistency without hesitation, but I feel like I need to go for the high risk guys with the outside potential to replace Johnson’s production in the short term. I dunno, am I overreacting and overthinking?

          • Matt 6:39 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I just think that compared to your other options he’s the strongest start. His ceiling is just as high as the other guys and his risk level is lower.

What do you think of starting Sanchez over Shaub this week. Standard league, non ppr. The Jets running game hasn’t been great so I’m expecting Sanchez to have to throw most of game. With Foster back in the lineup I’m expecting Houston to try to avoid going to the air through the PIT secondary. Not sure what to do… But gotta pick one that hopefully doesn’t have a dud game. I’m leaning Sanchez.

      • Matt 5:45 pm on October 1, 2011 Permalink | Reply

You’re thinking creatively and ignoring the conventional wisdom, and that alone means you’re probably a better fantasy football manager than most. That said, I’d still start Schaub over Sanchez just based on past performance and the proven potential firepower of the Houston offense. But if you want to go with your gut on this one, I wouldn’t blame you. It’s not a crazy start and it might work out for you.

      QB vick
RB forte bradshaw (tate, ridley, addai, bernard scott)
WR boldin harvin (d nelson, d moore)
      TE Finley

Jennings is probably the best player but unless you see ridley or addai as a legit starter down the road the point difference between jennings over boldin/harvin probably won’t be enough to make up for losing bradshaw.
