The Wire – Week 14: Who's Starting Vince Young in the Playoffs?

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week fourteen. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis. This week we start off with a few quarterbacks who’s play has improved dramatically over the next few weeks. Early in the season, did you ever imagine starting Alex Smith or Vince Young (or Bruce Gradkowski?) in the playoffs? Me neither.

*whew* Limped into the playoffs with 3 straight L’s but still managed to secure a Bye week.

My QB situation has been a crap shoot because I own McNabb, VY, and Alex Smith. Who do I start this week? Purely based on match-ups, I want to start VY…

I was 7-2 and tied for first – 4 straight losses has made me the 5th seed.. guys are just not performing :/

      • Brandon 3:37 pm on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hard to sit McNabb against a Giants defense that just got lit up by Tony Romo. Plus, if you actually look at the last few games the Rams of played, they haven’t been all that bad against the pass (shut down Hasselbeck and Cutler.) Stick with McNabb.

        • e-roc 3:46 pm on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’ll stick with McNabb… My team has under-performed for 3 straight weeks. Not looking good…

      Best week 14 flex play?
      Sidney Rice vs CIN
      Joseph Addai vs. DEN
      Jamaal Charles vs BUF

        Jamaal Charles, definitely.

      • Brandon 3:39 pm on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I agree with Tommy here, go with Jamaal Charles. The Bills are the worst team in the league at stopping the run.

Hey Guys – First off, thanks for helping me win my division, you guys are the best.

Wanted to know your thoughts on my playoff roster:
      – At RB I have SJax, Wells, Charles, F Jackson, & Forsett. Thinking about swapping someone for Harrison, as a posible week 15 option should something happen (like SJax’s back finally caving in). Maybe FredJack, or Forsett if it looks like they’ll be sticking to Jones….?
      – At WR, Welker, Austin, Ocho, SimsWalker, Smith(NYG). Meacham is available. Worth swapping one for him – will Ocho shine again?
      – D/ST – GB & CIN, who do you like going forward? (can also grab DEN, CAR, ARI)
      And for the rest:
      – TE – Witten & Shiancoe
      – K is always the flavor of the week, and Q is Brees.

Big question about whether I’m safer carrying 2 QBs in case Brees gets hurt (would grab Smith), but I’d have to drop something (probably the extra D/ST, hard to part with the others) Are there 2 D’s worth carrying, or do you think I can safely stick with one (probably GB this week, at least)

      Thanks!

      I’m thinking

…And I the Ravens DEF too, just swapped CIN for them

        • e-roc 8:12 am on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

You’re pretty stacked at WR.. They’re all #1’s on their respective teams. At this point, the only guy I would consider swapping is Steve Smith (NYG) for Meachem since he plays for an offensive juggernaut.

        • Brandon 3:45 pm on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Not sure Garcon is worth the add with the Colts about to clinch home field advantage through the playoffs and Peyton Manning seeing a drop in playing time.

      • Brandon 3:52 pm on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

It might not be a huge upgrade, but feel free to drop Forsett for Harrison. At least you’re assured he’ll get some carries. At wide receiver, I agree with E-Roc on Steve Smith. He hasn’t found the endzone a whole lot lately and actually has some pretty bad match-ups down the stretch (PHI, WAS, CAR.) I like Witten at tight end and love the Packers defense this week against Jay “Interception Machine” Cutler.

warner or A. smith this week

      • Brandon 3:41 pm on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Although there are some hip injury worries, Kurt Warner should be good to go on Monday and with the weapons he has at receiver, you have to start him over Alex Smith. This will all change if you find out that Warner is looking less likely to play later in the week, but for now plan on starting the old man.

2 RB 2 WR 1 Flex: MJD, McGahee, Addai, Rock Cartwright; Randy Moss, Steve Smith (NYG), Sid Rice, Britt and Maclin (will go if I get Meachem off waivers).

Although Miami is great against the run, MJD can still receive some passes, he should remain #1… I think the Colts will start resting starters, and Denver is quite tough for Addai. Cartwright will get a million touches and might score 0 TDs… and McGahee could score 3 in 3 carries! Oh boy…

For WRs I am only positive about Moss… Steve Smith *might* be ok against Brown and Samuel… it seems Young can throw the ball, so Britt has potential to wreck the Rams. I don’t like Rice against the Bengals and Maclin was dissapointing.

PD: Hoping to pick up Heap and Ravens to replace Olsen and Vikings… Baltimore’s schedule is pretty soft for the rest of the season.

      • Brandon 3:55 pm on December 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Jones-Drew and Cartwright (and hope he gets lucky against a bad Oakland run defense.) At receiver go with Moss, Britt (worth a gamble) and either Meachem or Smith, depending on if you got Meachem.

3 WR 2 RB 2 Flex: Sims Walker, Roddy White, T.O., Smith(NYG), Smith(Car), Crabtree, Chambers, Mike Wallace, Pierre Thomas, Ganther (starting against OAK), and Hightower.

I was thinking Wallace might have a good game if Ward doesn’t play. KC doesn’t have a good pass defense so TO might have a break game.

I’m pretty sure with Thomas and Ganther but Hightower is a good goal line back.
      Please help me out.

      • Dennis 3:06 pm on December 10, 2009 Permalink | Reply

        I also have Chris Brown.

        WR – Sims-Walker, T.O., White
        RB – PT and Ganther
Flex – Steve Smith (CAR) and Mike Wallace

I’m starting Mike Wallace tonight I think, especially if Hines Ward isn’t playing. If ward starts, you might consider swapping him for Steve Smith (NYG) though.

Who to start? Vince Young vs Stloy or Hasselback vs Houston?

      • Brandon 4:28 pm on December 10, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I love Vince Young’s match-up, but I think Hasselbeck is the safer bet. If you’re a gambling man, try your luck with Young though.

Im having a tough time deciding who to start this week at WR and QB…

At QB I have Romo and Smith, and I was dead set on Romo until I read this article…

At WR, ( in a league where we can start 5) I have
      Sims-Walker (vs MIA)
      Desean Jackson (vs NYG)
      Andre Johnson (vs. Sea)
      Santonio Holmes (vs. CLE)
      Kenny Britt( vs.STL)
      Pierre Garcon( vs. DEN)

Britt has been lighting people up lately and so has Garcon. I’m afraid to bench Holmes because of Cleveland’s horrible defense. I need some major help her guys.

      Thanks!

      • Brandon 4:40 pm on December 10, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hah, didn’t mean to make you second guess yourself, but you’re good to go with Romo anyways. He’s coming off two good performances in a row and plays a Chargers defense that just got beat up by the Browns of all teams.

At wide receiver, you might bench Kenny Britt, even if he has been playing well lately with Vince Young. If he doesn’t catch touchdowns in two of the last three games, he finishes with pretty bad numbers actually, so he’s a gamble.

Greetings!  I’m having a tough time week, finally moved into 4th in our standings, and working to protect that spot and make a team good enough to give some of our overpowered teams a run for their money come weeks 15-17 and I could use some assistance.  Here’s my lineup.

      QB:
      QB: Peyton Manning
      WR: Larry Fitzgerald
      WR: Marques Colston
      RB: Jamaal Charles
      RB: Cedric Benson
      TE: Heath Miller
      W/T: Mike Sims-Walker
      W/R: Jason Avant
      W/R: Kenny Britt

      On the bench:
      QB: Mark Sanchez
      RB: Mike Bell
      RB: Brandon Jacobs

Last week I finally benched Jacobs having moved in Britt into my lineup instead, figuring it was finally time, and it really came back to bite me.  I’ve got one empty spot on my roster and would be more than willing to make some moves should there be some options deemed better.  There are few availabilities at the QB position (Gradkowski, Boller, Moore being really the only real choices..and not necessarily good ones.)  TE Miller’s stock has certainly fallen in the last few weeks, and I’m wondering if Scaife, Finley or Carlson might not be better choices here? (All are available.)  Also, I’m not sure about WRs in the next few weeks, since Bess, Breaston, Bryant and Devin Thomas are all available.

      Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?

      • Brandon 4:51 pm on December 10, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’m a little confused about the empty QB spot you mention. I’m assuming you obviously want to pick up a quarterback and plug him in there. Is Chad Henne or Ryan Fitzpatrick available? I like them more than the guys you mention. If not, then I guess I’d go with Bruce Gradkowski (even though he’s one of my “misses” this week) and hope he continues where he left off last week.

With DeSean Jackson most likely playing, I’d plug in Brandon Jacobs for Jason Avant as well.

Finally, stick with Heath Miller, who is my tight end “hit” this week.

        • Tony 6:34 pm on December 10, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Sorry for not clarifying that empty spot. I had Sanchez in there previously, and he’s hurt this week. Henne and Fitzpatrick are both already taken as well. 2 QBs and 12 people make for slim QB pickings…

          Starters Available at QB:
          Gradkowski
          Moore
          Boller
          Freeman

        • Brandon 6:07 pm on December 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Stick with Gradkowski. Moore is an enticing option considering how bad the Patriots defense has been lately, but they’re playing at home and should be a lot better against the Panthers (considering they only have to cover one receiver!)

      WR1 Wayne?_bad Match up & may Colts may rest players. , WR2 & Flex (MSW-D, White-Q, Mason, Smith NY, Britt_”VY -Q”).
      Finally:
Do I pick up a back up QB for Rodgers (Smith & Young is avaliable). I have 2 _Kickers. Hartley & Gostkowski). Hartley will have better weather conditions. and 2 TEs (Celek I Shiancoe). Who would you drop?

      What do you think, thanks

      • Brandon 6:12 pm on December 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Mason as your WR2 and LT in the flex spot.

In terms of picking up a backup quarterback, there really isn’t a whole lot of season left and you won’t be benching Rodgers unless he gets hurt (knock on wood.) If you’re going to drop anyone, I guess you could drop Gostkowski, since you probably don’t need him anymore with Hartley playing now.

Wide receivers to watch out for (sleepers)

With most fantasy football league drafts complete, it’s time to skim the waiver wire for some players to keep an eye on. If you’re in a Yahoo league, these are the guys you would click the little ‘Add to Watch List’ flag next to their name. I guess you could consider these as “sleeper picks”, but they’re really just guys who have shown promise in the offseason and whose numbers could surprise you when the season is all said and done. I’ve also included a bonus running back waiver wire pickup in case you were interested.

    Wide receivers to watch:

    1. Davone Bess, MIA – Last season Bess ended the year with a respectable 54 receptions, but it was the end of the year where he really shined. Over the last six games of the season, Davone had 35 catches. This year he’s fighting to be the number two receiver alongside Ted Ginn, but in the end he should again be Pennington’s go-to guy and should put up some decent numbers.
    2. David Clowney, NYJ – Apparently he didn’t win the battle to be the #2 receiver for the Jets, but he’s faster than Chansi Stuckey and had a solid preseason. Look for him to get a lot of looks in the passing game no matter where he is on the depth chart.
    3. (More …)

I am officially on the Hakeem Nicks bandwagon. He apparently just worked his way up to #4 WR on the depth chart and Im surprised he isnt #2. I suppose the Giants want to give former high pick Manningham a shot but Nicks’ pre-season explosion may keep him off the field and push Manningham down the depth chart.

      • Brandon 2:02 pm on September 12, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah I agree, I think he’ll move up the depth chart mid-way through the season, but I’m still holding off on my final judgement until we see what this year’s version of the Giants offense is all about.

    Ask the Geeks: Darrius Heyward-Bey

Atg ButtonThis week we got a question about the top receiver taken in the NFL draft and his relevance to fantasy football this season:

Ken asks: Hey What do you guys think about Darrius Heyward-Bey? Is he worth picking up on waivers as a “wait-and-see” guy?

Oakland wide receiver Chaz Schilens was close to being Mr. Irrelevant in last year’s NFL draft, but he could be the best the team has at the position this year and he made a pretty big statement by catching five passes for 52 yards in the first preseason game. Schilens might be a decent sleeper pick in your league’s draft and will probably end up with better stats than the team’s high-profile rookie receiver, Darrius Heyward-Bey, who was not effective at all in the game (one catch for 8 yards.)

When someone named Chaz Schilens might be your best option at any position, you can kiss the season goodbye.
