    Free agency updates

    • QB Bruce Gradkowski signs with the Cincinnati Bengals…and becomes their new starter I think?
    • New Orleans Saints reportedly have re-signed WR Lance Moore to a new contract.
    • RB Frank Gore threatening to hold out when training camp begins. Add him to the list of slightly risky first round picks, along with Chris Johnson (also threatening to hold out.)
    • RB DeAngelo Williams re-signs with the Panthers. Jonathan Stewart cries.
    • The New York Jets sign free agent receiver Santonio Holmes to a new long term deal.
    • Wide receiver Donte Stallworth to the Washington Redskins.
    • I’m hearing Donovan McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings as a veteran bridge for rookie Christian Ponder.
    • The Buffalo Bills bring in some competition for incumbent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick with the signing of journeyman Tyler Thigpen.
    • Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck signs a deal with the Tennessee Titans, immediately becoming the starter and giving some credibility to the passing game…if they had any receivers.

The Wire: Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 2, 2008

Here’s a look at the players to target on your league’s waiver wire this week. This list is ordered by the percentage of ESPN leagues in which the player is available; even if you’re not a ESPN user, it’s a decent indication of how likely you are to find the player on waivers in your league. We also note here how strongly we feel about this pickup with three categories: Instant Starter, Grab ‘n’ Stash, or Desperation Pickup.

Greg Lewis, WR, Eagles (0.0% owned, Desperation Pickup) – If you’re looking for a WR3 option for week two and you miss out on the Eddie Royal sweepstakes, take a look at Greg Lewis. Behind DeSean Jackson, Lewis was the most consistent option for McNabb in the passing game, reeling in five receptions for 104 yards. Until Reggie Brown comes back and maybe even when he does, Lewis could see plenty of targets in an offense that seems to be pass first…no matter who’s running the routes.

Matt Cassel, QB, NE (0.2% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – He still hasn’t shown anything to write home about in his time as the quarterback for the Patriots throughout the preseason and now in week one, but he just has too many weapons to put up bad numbers all season long. Pick him up if you’re hurting for a backup quarterback and hope that he can properly utilize Randy Moss (he did already with Moss this past weekend) and Wes Welker at some point in the season.

Dante Rosario, TE, CAR (0.2% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – Seven receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown are numbers you would appreciate coming from any WR/TE on your team. That’s what you’ll find available on your leagues waiver wire with the Panther’s tight end Dante Rosario. He appeared to be a favorite target of Jake Delhomme (at least while Steve Smith was out…and he’s out again this weekend), and although he suffered a foot sprain, it doesn’t appear to be serious and he could be someone that can put up decent numbers from the position all season long.

Anthony Fasano, TE, Dolphins (4.1% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – Fasano, meet Sparano. Miami’s offense with Pennington at the helm involves the tight end position in a big way, and Fasano’s got the size, talent and obvious connection with his QB to take full advantage. He’s an OK start right now, but if you’ve got another decent option at TE, I’d hold off on starting him for another week to see if he continues to see so many looks. (More …)

    A few updates 'n' links

JaMarcus Russell is a big fatty.

Warrick Dunn‘s a Buc again. Could get interesting with Earnest Graham, who was arguably the biggest surprise of 2007. He probably won’t challenge Graham for the starting spot, but he could steal some carries and (especially) looks. (The question with Cadillac Williams isn’t whether he’ll start in ’08 – he won’t – but rather whether he’ll ever start in the NFL again).

Julius Jones is officially a Seahawk, and if he was getting half of the carries in a backfield shared with the man-beast that is Marion Barber, it seems pretty likely that he’ll get something similar in Seattle. One thing’s for certain: Shaun Alexander‘s days of being a fantasy RB1 are long gone, never to return. (More …)

Oakland Raiders sign Javon Walker to HUGE contract

Apparently the Raiders have decided that Javon Walker is a better receiver than Randy Moss and have agreed to sign him to an insane 6 year, $55 million contract. If the Raiders couldn’t get it done with the greatest receiver of this era, then why the hell would they think they could with Walker? How can they justify paying Walker so much money, especially considering the fact that he’s coming off a season where he played in a whopping five games and that he’s only started every game in a season once in the past six years? Many questions surround this move by the Raiders, but one thing is certain…they will be a bad team again next year, unless JaMarcus Russell turns into Tom Brady over night.
