The Wire – Week 15: Slim Pickings

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week 15. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis. We’re coming down to crunch-time now, with the playoffs starting/continuing in nearly every league out there at this point, so hopefully you don’t have to rely too much on the players listed here. As usual, good luck to everyone as you try to get one step closer to that league championship!

Made it to playoffs, need some help though, I’m playing Kevin Faulk instead of McCoy as flex, using R.Bush and Maroney at RB. Thought about Meachem in the flex, buy NE plays Buffalo. Got J.Stewart on the bench this week, might have to put Meachem in for Fitzgereld if he is hurt. I have Alex Smith for next week verse the Lions, cause I know Manning won’t really play that last game, if I make it to the next round. What do you guys think?

      • Brandon 10:31 am on December 16, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’m not sure you can justify starting Kevin Faulk over Robert Meachem in the flex spot. If Larry Fitzgerald doesn’t play, I’d put Meachem in the WR slot, then as long as Brian Westbrook doesn’t play, put LeSean McCoy in the flex spot. Kevin Faulk does have a touchdown in the past two games, but that isn’t his strong suit and when the Bills and Patriots played in week one, Faulk had under 60 combine yards.

I’m thinking of starting Meachem over Ochocinco in the playoffs. I have to play 3 WR and my other two are Vincent Jackson and Miles Austin. I also have Steve Breaston on my bench and without LF he could have a nice game. Any suggestions? Ochocinco has underperformed for me so is Meachem a better choice?

        • Brandon 8:26 am on December 17, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah I’m fine with Meachem over Ochocinco. Meachem has a better match-up this week and should have a decent game against Dallas, who just got beat up by the Giants and Chargers receivers in recent weeks.

My QB situation is horrrible. I have David Garrard and Brady Quinn. Which one do I start? Slim picking on the wire. Also who is the better flex play: Addai or Sidney Rice?

      • Brandon 8:23 am on December 17, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Sidney Rice over Addai, who could be benched at half-time if the Colts have a big lead. As for your unfortunate quarterback situation (I can’t believe I’m saying this,) go with Brady Quinn. He has a much better match-up and while the Browns offense has been putrid this season, Quinn has a few decent games as of late. Plus, you won’t have to sit there and agonize over a bad Garrard outing for three days if he puts up a stinker tonight. Good luck!

The waiver wire is unavailable for me in the playoffs and I’m forced to choose between starting Marion Barber and Pierre Thomas going head to head in the same game. Pierre has had better games recently, but Mike Bell is supposed to be back, and New Orleans’ run D is worse than Dallas’.

      • Brandon 8:24 am on December 17, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Neither has scored touchdowns in the running game lately, but the fact that Pierre Thomas is used in the passing game makes him more valuable here.

I’m playing the number one seed in the playoffs this week. This would be a huge win. I need 3WR 2RB and 2 flex.

      Players I have
WR: TO, Smith(NYG), Hakeem Nicks, Antonio Bryant, Dwayne Bowe, Roddy White, Crabtree, Sims-Walker, Chambers
      RB: Pierre Thomas, Ganther, Hightower

Cribbs is also available in my league. I’m most likely playing Ganther after his performance last week. Not to sure about Hightower since he’s been losing carries and having fumble issues of late but he is playing Detroit.

      • Brandon 11:44 am on December 20, 2009 Permalink | Reply

At receiver, I like T.O., Steve Smith and Michael Crabtree. Did you start Pierre Thomas last night? If so, go with Quinton Ganther alongside him. In the flex spots, go with Hakeem Nicks and take a gamble on Roddy White, even if he’s against Darrelle Revis.

The Wire: Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 10, 2008

Here’s a look at the players to target on your league’s waiver wire this week. This list is ordered by the percentage of ESPN leagues in which the player is available; even if you’re not a ESPN user, it’s a decent indication of how likely you are to find the player on waivers in your league. We also note here how strongly we feel about this pickup with three categories: Instant Starter, Grab ‘n’ Stash, or Desperation Pickup.

Sage Rosenfels, QB, Texans (1.3% owned, Instant Starter) – It looks like starter Matt Schaub will be out for at least a month, so if you were counting on him to lead you to the fantasy football playoffs, you might want to rethink your strategy. Rosenfels will fill in for Schaub in the meantime and while he’s prone to turn the ball over every once in a while, he’ll still put up decent fantasy stats for your team in this pass-happy offense.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs (8.6% owned, Grab ‘n’ Stash) – With Larry Johnson already out, the Chiefs also lost backup Kolby Smith for the season with a knee injury. This means that Mr. Charles and his 106 yard effort on Sunday will be the starter for the rest of the season (or until he also gets hurt.) He still plays for the Chiefs though, so I wouldn’t be too eager to jam him into your lineup right away! (More …)

How about Culpepper for owners hard up for a QB? He may start this week with Orlovsky getting hurt and his big arm and Calvin Johnson could create some big plays.

I thought about putting Culpepper on this list, but he’s been out of the game for a while and we’re not even sure he’s starting at this point. If you’re in a deep league, you could consider him, but otherwise I’d let him play a game or two first…

Do you see any value in Brandon Lloyd?

    • Shirley 6:43 pm on November 4, 2008 Permalink | Reply

Flacco and Edwards are still available in my league. I already have Flacco lined up on my waiver list. Should I go with one of the QBs listed above instead? I also have Romo sitting on my team so I pretty much just need a QB for a week or two. I had Orton who was doing splendidly until his injury on Sunday.

    • Brandon 10:09 am on November 5, 2008 Permalink | Reply

@Michael: Brandon Lloyd makes an worth-while pick up if you have room to spare on your bench. You’re going to want to see what form he is in when he returns to the field before plugging him into your lineup, especially with Rex Grossman at the helm. At best, he’ll become a decent WR3 play towards the end of the season and into the fantasy playoffs.

    • Brandon 10:16 am on November 5, 2008 Permalink | Reply

@Shirley: Because of the fact that you just need a quarterback for a week or two, I don’t think it makes sense to pick up a “project” like Brady Quinn. However, I’d go for Sage Rosenfels before Joe Flacco or Trent Edwards. Rosenfels picks up a pretty solid passing game and should be the quarterback long enough (Shaub will be out for about a month most likely) to pick up the slack until Romo returns to form.

The Wire: Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 6, 2008

Here’s a look at the players to target on your league’s waiver wire this week. This list is ordered by the percentage of ESPN leagues in which the player is available; even if you’re not a ESPN user, it’s a decent indication of how likely you are to find the player on waivers in your league. (Due to technical difficulties, only the names of the week 6 players are on the list now…and by technical difficulties I mean I deleted it by accident! Anyways, you should be looking at the week 7 waiver pick-ups now anyways.) (More …)
