Yesterday, Michael Vick delivered his version of the Allen Iverson Practice?!? routine:

“I don’t practice to play,” Vick told the Philadelphia Daily News. “Not to be arrogant or sound arrogant, but I don’t need practice to play. It’s just being able to deal with (the pain). Working out the little kinks and getting ready to go play some ball.”

It’s good to hear him describing his injuries as “kinks,” but what does this mean for Sunday’s game? You can bet that Andy Reid would love to have Vick back for the matchup with the Falcons, who so far have looked like the team to beat in the NFC, and that Vick would be willing to play through a lot of pain to take a shot at his old team. No official word yet, but we’ll keep an eye out…

I have no clue what he is talking about. “I don’t practice to play,” then “getting ready to go play some ball”? I thought he didn’t practice to play? Confused.

Nobody ever mistook either of the Vick brothers for Rhodes scholars. I think Mike’s actually the smart one.

Week 4 FAIL – Injuries start piling up

Continuing with a new post for this season, here are a few players who just didn’t quite live up to expectations this week. Were they over-rated to begin with? Did they just have a bad game? Were they benched because their team was dominating (or getting dominated?) It’s probably just a one week mishap, but if they land on this list a couple weeks in a row, you might start worrying! Anyways, feel free to add to the discussion with your own. Maybe someone that you blame this week’s loss on?

This week’s list could almost double as a weekly injury wrap-up, with a few players status in question right up to game time (Ray Rice & Andre Johnson,) then the entire passing game of the Eagles going out the window due to one ill-advised Mike Vick rushing attempt. These injuries no doubt hurt more than one of you out there. Anyways, here’s the list of this week’s failures. Enjoy!

Marques Colston has been a bust so far … I know he can tear it up at any moment, but he definitely has been a bust. He should be on the list

If there was a season long FAIL post then I’d agree, but he’s already lowered my expectations to the point where his 30-60 yards aren’t all that unexpected…

        • Squish 3:41 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Agreed. I didn’t expect Colston to be an elite WR this year. The Saints spread the ball around too much to have any reliable fantasy options. Sometimes the best teams are no better than the worst for fantasy value.

Glad to hear. Those are almost the best wins sometimes, since you know a player like Maclin won’t put up a goose egg all that often. Like when you win your match-up with the second to lowest score, because you played the guy with the worst score, hah.

As things currently stand, would you trade Vick, Maclin and R. Mathews for MJD, V. Young and A. Collie?

Depends on who else you have at QB and WR….

I also have T. brady a QB, and both Wayne and D.Clark starting from the Colts

        make that trade.

      • Brandon 9:47 am on September 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m leaning towards sticking with Vick, Maclin and Mathews for a few reasons: 1) Vince Young doesn’t add anything to the trade, 2) I can’t imagine Collie doing anywhere but down (if only slightly) from his insane numbers so far, 3) MJD is scaring me, 4) Maclin should continue to improve with more playing time with Vick at QB and 5) you have enough Colts receivers already (that BYE week wouldn’t be pretty.)

        Hopefully that all made sense…

      • Matt 9:32 am on September 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Both are great options but as long as Brees’ knee is OK (keep an eye on it) I’d go with him. A healthy Brees will tear the Panthers apart.

Michael Vick to start in week 3

While responding to some comments tonight, I take a look over at NFL.com and what do I find but a huge, red BREAKING NEWS banner saying that Michael Vick will start at quarterback for the Eagles in week 3. Apparently it doesn’t even have anything to do with Kevin Kolb’s health either. Vick just exceeded expectations and coach Andy Reid thinks he gives the team the best chance to win. So if you were considering making some kind of move regarding Vick…maybe you want to rethink it?

    • Seth 10:29 am on September 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Should I start Vick over Brady in week 3? I started Vick over Brady in week 2 and got a 33-15 point advantage.

      • Shane 12:48 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Brady is playing the 16th ranked pass defense this week and vick is playing the 28th. remember these rankings are built on just two games but it is a pretty solid indicator for who to start. It is nearly impossible to sit Brady of Vick this week making the decision difficult. I bet by the end of the week there will only be a 2 point spread from one to the other.

      • Brandon 1:12 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m deferring to Matt on this one, since he’s in the same predicament, but I find it amusing that there seems to be so many questions on Brady vs Vick. Does anyone have these issues with Schaub, Peyton Manning or Brees vs Vick? Just curious.

      • Mal 8:17 pm on September 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Brady is your go to man- yes what happened last week can happen but you’ll feel like an idiot when it doesn’t. If you drafted a good QB you start him every week but the bye. Trade Vick to strengthen the rest of your team. You’re playing with fire not starting Tom Brady, HE IS A BEAST.

WR Legedu Naanee SD 10 —
TE Vernon Davis SF 9 —
      K Robbie Gould CHI 8 —
TDSP New York Jets NYJ 7

My team (12 person $$ league) . I traded Foster/Ryan for Schaub/Davis after week 1 to get to this point. QB’s in this leauge get 6pts for TD’s and 1pt for every 20 yrds. Standard scoring other than that.
Another team has Henne and Gerard as his QB’s.He wants to give me Bradshaw for Cutler. I told him I wanted MJD or Deangelo Williams 🙂

Question, with QBs being so important in our format would you make the trade (even if he agreed to D Williams) or keep Cutler for in case Schaub gets injured? If KC would give Charles the ball instead of Thomas Jones this would be a mute point !!!

      • Brandon 9:53 am on September 23, 2010 Permalink | Reply

How many players at each position do you start? 1 QB and 2 RB? Any flex position? Anyways, it probably makes sense to trade for one of those running backs as long as 1) you only start one QB and 2) you can find a serviceable backup for Schaub’s bye week. You don’t want to be giving up points at the RB position every week just so that you’re in good shape if your quarterback gets hurt.

Why I'm starting Vick over Brady this week

This is really, really unlike me. I’m always the guy who gives commenters on this site a hard time for benching their MVPs just because of the matchup. And I’m extremely wary of high-profile, big-name “game changers” like Vick who never live up to the absurd amount of hype that’s heaped upon them. So if this doesn’t work out, I’ll be doubly disappointed – first because it might cost me the matchup, and second because I’ll know I should’ve stuck to my modus operandi.

Also worth mentioning: I don’t like Michael Vick. He failed the trust of everyone he ever worked with, and squandered his one-in-a-billion athletic talents by never taking football seriously. That’s reason enough for me to dislike him without even getting into the unspeakable things he did to dogs.

But this is fantasy football, so what matters are the cold, hard statistics. Against the Lions, I think Vick is capable of a 40-fantasy-point night in our keeper league where passing TDs are 6 points each. He’d need something like 225 passing yards (9 points), 120 rushing yards (14 points including the 100-yard bonus) and three total touchdowns, rushing or passing (18 points). I’m not predicting that he’ll get these numbers, I’m saying they’re his ceiling for the game and that I think he’s got a decent shot.

Vick got everyone’s attention last week against a Green Bay defense that is widely considered to be one of the most well-rounded units in the league, posting over 100 yards rushing in just over one half while maintaining a 101.9 QB rating and reminding everyone of the player we thought he might mature into someday. The Lions will have had a week to plan for him, but is a well-prepared Lions defense any better than a caught-off-guard Packers defense? I doubt it.

Hmm…maybe it’s my Patriots homer-ism, but I’d still start Brady over Vick. Also remember that picking up Vick requires at least temporarily dropping a player on your roster with no guarantee that you’ll get them back depending on waivers. Matt dropped Jabar Gaffney for Vick. If Gaffney blows up this week…he may regret this decision…just sayin’! 🙂

      • Matt 4:36 pm on September 17, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yep, I’ll definitely be pissed if Gaffney blows up, but my bench was JUST THAT STACKED and someone had to go.

I thought about picking Vick up for a while yesterday (also a Brady owner), but by the time i got around to it, he was gone. Which, in the end, probably worked out best since i don’t think i had the stones to start him anyway…and it costs me $1 every add/drop.

Best of luck to you. Hope they’re both top 5 QBs.

Rodgers has the match-up and his proven track record
Vick has the match-up, but the Jury is out on whether he caught Green Bay off guard or if he’s really that ready.

Rodgers – his matchup’s a lot better than Brady’s, plus he’s going to need to throw more now that Grant’s out for the season.

    • Squish 4:40 pm on September 17, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Where would you guys place McNabb on your QB rankings? I’m run a QB carousel in my money league and ended up with Eli Manning, Carson Palmer and McNabb. Last week I made the right choice and played Palmer but this week I’m a bit stumped. On the one hand, McNabb plays a Houston Defense that gave up over 400 yards last week to Peyton. The problem is that McNabb isn’t Peyton and typically (or at least last year), the Texans have pretty solid pass defense. I’m staying entirely away from Palmer this week because he played like crap last week (other than garbage time) and this week he plays a tougher defense in Baltimore. Eli Manning is who I’m leaning towards because he seems to be the most consistently good. However, he plays a IND defense that is likely to yield a ton to the run. Like Schaub last week, he may not get a chance to pass at all this week. Thoughts?

Enjoyed reading your post Matt. I’m facing the same conundrum and have decided to start Vick over Brady. It’s definitely a roll of the dice, risky, unknown, but this week I’m facing a guy who’s a Steelers Homer (his team name is GOT SIX) and has drafted all Steelers and the Ravens QB on his roster so I’m thinking it’s a good week to take a risk like this. He even drafted Roethlisberger and has him sitting on the bench until he comes back. Low risk, high reward! I hope. I don’t like Vick or Brady, and 9 times out of 10 I’d start Brady no matter what defense he was facing. But I figure may as well see what the “new” Michael Vick can do as a starter.

      • Trav 5:16 am on September 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I have Brady and Vick as well and started Vick last week (right choice). This week I’m going to start brady. They both have good matchups, but Brady is at home, with a vengence, and something to prove. Vick of course has something to prove too, but with the way the Pats played last week…they are poised to go off this week.

        • Johnzo 8:33 am on September 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Thanks Trav. Good stuff. You’re the second vote I’ve heard for Brady.

    • Trav 3:28 am on September 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Really couldn’t go wrong this week with either. I chose Brady (wrong) but I’m ok with it. I knew what I was gonna get (3 tds), and Brady put up great points. I am trying to trade Brady/mjd for chris Johnson because I dislike having this controversy and mjd is pissing me off.

Anyways looking ahead…Miami defense has been very solid while Washington def has given up the most total yards in the NFL. I’m going with Vick for this fact plus the fact that I’ll feel worse if I go with Brady and Vick goes off again than if I go with Vick and Brady goes off…at least I’m going with the hot hand and probably the better matchup (miami likes to run alot which eats clock and will keep Brady off the field more). Good luck, but that’s what I’m gonna do…
