    First-Half Fantasy Player Awards

Biggest Surprise: Hard to go with anyone but Cam Newton here. He’s had a good deal of help from a re-energized Steve Smith, but the inverse is true as well – it’s so long since we last saw how dangerous Smith could be that the fantasy world had just about written him off. Those who took a late-round flier on him in keeper leagues have been on cloud nine all season. Honorable Mention: Jimmy Graham, Victor Cruz, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Biggest Flop: Again, an easy call – Chris Johnson isn’t just having a bad year, he’s having an awful one. The only reason he wasn’t benched weeks ago is because he forced his team to sign him to what looks like a ludicrous contract now. You have to wonder whether he somehow knew his best playing days were already behind him, making it imperative to sign a contract before anyone got the chance to see him play. Honorable Mention: DeAngelo Williams, Josh Freeman (a pre-season fantasy darling), Mike Williams (blame Freeman). (More …)

Is Sam Bradford returning next week a safe bet? Wondering if dropping AJ Feeley now is smart.

That’s the word on the street. If you wouldn’t start AJ Feeley this week anyways, obviously you’re free to drop him.

thats tough. Tebow has good legs, and will get at least on the ground, but its a RISKY bet, especially given his last performance. Palmer could be good, but its still not sure if he will have any gas in the tank, or know the offesne well enough, Smith has been ok and he has edwards and crabtree back, Bradford has a bad line, but dude can throw, and he has Lloyd now. Freeman has been pretty good, and has a good match up vs NO. Id say Tebow and Freeman, but keep your eye on Palmer. Just my thoughts

I have Maurice Morris…so i can play him…and if McGahee goes then i can play him too… i can go get Marion Barber, Chris Ogbonnaya, or even the lump – Kregg Lumpkin. also, need a qb…should I go Dalton? my QB choices are limited this week…travaris Jackson, AJ FEELEY, etc. what are your thoughts. i need a QB and a RB.

I wouldn’t. Wait until he comes back from his injury and see how it plays out. He might even play this week, so you’ll get an idea of where he stands.

Which WRs should I start. 2WR and a W/T flex.

Decker, Manningham, Nicks, JNelson, Antonio Brown. I am thinking Nicks, Nelson and Brown/Decker. Leaning toward Decker cause Brown is up against the Baltimore defense. Thoughts? (((I’ve got Heath Miller as my other TE (W/T flex)(Finley getting the start)))

    Peyton Hillis out today

Kind of a surprise since he doesn’t have an injury, just an illness (strep).

    • Nicole 11:23 am on September 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I just grabbed Montario Hardesty…should I play him in place of Peyton? My other options are: WR – Wel Welker, Mike Wallace (a definite start), Dwayne Bowe, Eric Decker. RB – Mike Turner (a def start), Hightower, Jacobs, Hardesty, Helu).

      • Nicole 11:43 am on September 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I obviously listed the WR’s b/c there is a flex position and we have a PPR league.

        • Natalie 12:45 pm on September 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Nicole- Peyton Hillis is OUT for todays game. If you have Hightower you need to start him and Michael Turner at RB. You definitely want to start Mike Wallace and Wes Welker at WR. The others listed are risky but Helu had a big week last week. Is Ben Tate RB available in your league to pick up in place of Arian Foster who is out this week? If so pick him up and play him in flex spot.

And your next Madden cover will feature…Peyton Hillis?

peyton hillis stiff armIn the first ever vote to see who graces the cover of the Madden football video game, fans voted for Cleveland Browns’ running back Peyton Hillis over Michael Vick. They’re trying to credit the city of Cleveland with helping to support Hillis, but I think it’s pretty obvious that it was fantasy football fans in general that got him there. Pretty impressive win for Hillis, who won the contest over heavy-weights like Aaron Rodgers, Andre Johnson, Adrian Peterson and Vick (and more.)

Anyone know why Arian Foster wasn’t even in the contest though? Strange.

While Hillis did not deliver my championship, he did get me many wins in the early and mid-season so I could get into the playoffs. But I voted for Hillis because he’s a HOG! WHOOOOO-PIG!!!

If you have any interest in Jerome Harrison, now’s the time to offer a trade for him. There’s something very strange about this situation – Harrison has displayed feature back-level talent on more than one occasion, but the organization seems unwilling to commit to him. This weekend’s matchup with Cincinnati feels like a perfect opportunity for Harrison to re-emerge as a fantasy factor. Peyton Hillis will get more carries, but I suspect that Harrison will do more with his, and in so doing he’ll upset the balance of power on a team struggling to figure out its own identity.

Hey Matt, I have a question and want some advice (not related to the Browns’ situation, I’m staying the hell away from Mangini’s outfit). In one non-ppr league and for the first time I changed approach during the draft and got (fourteenth pick overall) Wayne and Peyton Manning first and second round. In the third I drafted Arian Foster, forth I went with Gates, Nicks, Bradshaw, Hightower…etc…until the eleventh, where I caught Austin Collie. Sufice to say I’m 3-0 with a significant point advantage over the second guy in the standings. Two weeks ago a guy with itchy fingers released Brandon Marshall to the waiver wire and I got him. This week I traded Nicks for Rothcheeseburger (good deal, bad deal? dunno). I now sport a solid WR core, my running backs are earning their keep(Hightower is not going to last longer, however), and at TE and QB I can’t say I landed a sore deal. Anyways, my question is what to do with all the colts in my lineup?, should I wait until after week 10 to make a move? I know I landed big now, but if they get their home field advantage as they’re looking to, my final weeks are going down the drain. I could trade some of my receivers for another rb, but who should I keep? What say you?, thanks

      • Matt 12:14 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Given that the Colts already have one loss, I’d hold off on looking to deal those players away just yet. Week 10 is too late to make a move if you’re going to, though – assuming the other owners in your league pay attention and know that the Colts rest their starters when they can, they won’t be willing to give you much for them by that point in the season. If the Colts win their next three games and look like a safe bet to lock up home field advantage, that’s when I’d try to make a move.

Nice team btw, especially in such a big league.

Thanks man, I’ll deal with it right after the Colts’ bye

The Wire – Week 4 Pick-ups: BYE Weeks Begin!

Hopefully everyone was as successful as I was in week three, going 4-0 in my leagues. I also came very close to winning three week’s worth of skins in one league for having the most points, but Aaron Rodgers ended up screwing me. Anyways, here’s the preliminary waiver wire list for week four, using my new and improved Google Docs spreadsheet format 🙂 I’ve returned to the categories (or similar categories) that I used last year to describe each player and what type of impact they’ll make going forward. Let me know if anyone has any issues with the new format.

      • Brandon 1:39 pm on September 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m hearing that Cadillac may be losing some carries, as the coach doesn’t want to wear him down. However, that doesn’t mean Seattle is all of a sudden going to get a running game. I’d keep Cadillac for now. The ESPN rankings have them at nearly the same spot (along with Peyton Hillis):

          • Brandon 9:55 am on September 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Still think Crabtree can turn it around and maybe the new offensive coordinator is the one to do the trick. As for Gradkowski, I figure he’ll be good for about 190 yards, a touchdown and an interception on an average week. Is that good enough to be your backup?

The guy that would make the trade is absolutely stacked at WR and has no RBs.

My question is should I make this trade and if so which RB should I go after of his?

In a league where scoring is as follows: QB gets 6 pts for TD, -2 for fumble or sack, 1 pt every 25 yards. WR gets 6 pts for TD and 1 pt every 10 yards. At QB I have Bradford and Henne. At WR I have Jennings, Marshall, Maclin, D. Thomas, S. Rice and Breaston. What do you think of trading Maclin for McNabb?

      • Brandon 2:35 pm on September 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I like the idea of trying to upgrade the quarterback position, but A) I’m not a huge McNabb fan and B) you aren’t all that deep at WR at the moment with Rice and Breaston out. At least for the next two weeks, Bradford makes a solid play with Seattle and Detroit on the schedule.
