The Wire: Jackie goes to Battle for your team (except next week)

This season I’ve continued to tweak the format of the waiver wire list, so pay attention! I’ve organized it by position now, since that probably makes more sense when you’re trying to fill a particular position. In terms of the color coding, green is guys to target, yellow is guys to wait on (except in deeper leagues) and red is one-hit-wonders.

Here is the waiver wire advice for this week in Google Doc spreadsheet format if that’s the way you prefer to digest it.

Remember, Pickemfirst is a great browser plug-in to use with our waiver wire lists! Anyways, another running back has a breakout week, only to go on a BYE the following week. Always confuses people…

Which of these WRs to drop for Cruz: Washington, JNelson, A Brown (return yards league – Brown has averaged 12 PTs/game here). I’m leaning Jordy, he’s great but the inconsistency is killing me.

      • Brandon 1:56 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Of the group, it seems that Nelson has become the most inconsistent, but his upside is also higher than the other two most weeks. Cruz on the other hand has huge upside and his consistency is starting to show itself as he has taken over the WR2 gig from Mario Manningham. If you don’t start him, you might drop Nate Washington who will continue to compete with Jared Cook, more carries for Chris Johnson and second year WR Damian Williams.

Thanks, Brandon. Any opinions on a D/St of the week – return yards count (1 per 10 kick return, per 20 punt return yards – making even NE a decent D in our league…). Here’s whats out there: Min (@Chi), CIN (vs Indy), Hou (no Mario, @ BAL), Buf @NYG, NE vs Dal, OAK (vsCLE), ATL (vs Car), Mia.

Quick one Percy Harvin or DHB?? Also, If you had to bench two who would you choose; Branch, J Nelson, Holmes, Colston , Wayne, and the winner of the first question?

        • nate 6:26 pm on October 14, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I need help…pick two to start….Ryan Grant, Crabtree, Dallas Clark, Kendall Hunter, Massaquoi….I have some byes, and some injuries to flex position.

    • Neil 1:12 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Who do you think I should drop to get Moore (QB-MIA). Tarvaris has a bye and I need a fill-in. Torrey Smith (WR), James Casey (RB/TE), Eric Decker (WR – BYE), Jordy Nelson (WR), Mario Manningham (WR), Nate Burleson (WR). The spots with a Bye this week for me are 1QB and 1W/T.

      • Brandon 1:57 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Ditch James Casey. The guy had one fluky big game and hasn’t done squat in any other week.

    • Randy 9:59 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’m in a 12-team, standard league; we start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, and 1 RB/WR/TE. Would you consider any QBs mentioned above as an upgrade over Cutler as backup QB? Also, I have Foster, Felix J, Best, Ridley, and Ben Tate at RB, and Fitzgerald, Mike Williams (TB), Harvin, and Manningham at WR. I’m defintely looking to drop Tate for someone, and am considering dropping one of my unproductive WRs as well. What would you do in my shoes? I’m 1-4 in my league, so I’d appreciate any advice you may have… Thanks!!

      • Randy 10:06 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

P.S. I should mention the names who are available as free agents at this time; QB – Painter, Tebow, Alex Smith, Dalton; RB – Jackie Battle, Delone Carter, Bernard Scott; WR – Heyward-Bey, Doug Baldwin, Steve Breaston, Malcom Floyd, Greg Little. Also, because we don’t have a waiver wire process (we have a free-for-all free agency period staring at 9PM on Tues) I have to be focused and prioritized regarding any moves I make… Thanks again!

      • Brandon 9:42 am on October 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Who is your starting quarterback? If you want a gamble with relatively high upside, go for Tim Tebow (as long as he’s named the starter.) He’ll rack up the rushing yards and get some rushing TD’s in addition to his passing stats. At running back, grab Battle over Tate and possibly Baldwin/Heyward-Bey/Breaston over Manningham…although that’s not a huge upgrade anyways.

        • Randy 10:10 am on October 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Thanks, my starting QB is Romo, so I’m not sure if my backup should be someone with lower risk/reward in case Romo gets injured (since his bye was week 5), or someone with high upside in case I want to insert him on a matchup basis. I feel like “on paper”, my roster is decent, but my WRs in particular are all being shut down it seems…

        • Randy 10:12 am on October 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’m also curious if you like Jared Cook over Fred Davis at a backup TE. My starter is Vernon Davis… Thanks again!

          • Brandon 1:46 pm on October 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

They’re both going to be fairly inconsistent, but in the short term I like Cook over Davis. If Davis returns from the BYE with a bang though then maybe I switch my allegiances. πŸ™‚

I just got this offer: he gives me Ingram and Stafford, I give him Jahvid Best and Michael Bush. On the surface it seems like a great deal. I have Matt Ryan and no backup, and I still have Chris Johnson, Mcgahee, Benson, Addai, and Torain. He has Brees so he’s not worried about losing Stafford. Should I push for a better trade or jump on it?

I have Dez Bryant, Wes Welker as my starting WR’s, in reserve I also have Victor Cruz that is sitting on my bench. Most all the experts say start Bryant over Cruz since they’re playing NE Patriots, worst pass defense in the league. Here’s my concern……Miles Austin is back. Jason Witten is playing as well, thoughts???

Just to confirm, if I need to drop one of my WRs in the near future to open up spots elsewhere, would Manningham be the one to sacrifice? And what do you think of Greg Little’s and Mark Clayton’s prospects (once Clayton returns in a week or two)? Thanks again!

To those who have never seen it in use, here is what it looks like when you run Pickemfirst while looking at our waiver wire spreadsheet. The green means the player is available in one of your leagues. Blue means he’s on one of your teams. Gray means he’s taken in all of your leagues. The red star is new and means that there is an update or recommendation for the player.

Hey Brandon, thanks for the help so far, you’ve been awesome.

I have two pending trade offers from the same player:

      1.
      Send LeSean McCoy, Phi RB
      Send DeAngelo Williams, Car RB
      Receive Reggie Wayne, Ind WR
      Receive Packers D/ST, GB D/ST

      2.
      Send Fred Jackson, Buf RB
      Send LeSean McCoy, Phi RB
      Receive Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buf QB
      Receive Beanie Wells, Ari RB
      Receive Reggie Wayne, Ind WR
      Receive Packers D/ST, GB D/ST

My defense is kinda lacking, have the Chargers, but Jackson and McCoy are my top scorers, so my gut instinct tells me to decline both trades. What do you think?

What do you make of this whole Chris Johnson thing? Is he going to eventually get it going? I just got offered him and Dez Bryant for DeSean Jackson and Santonio Holmes. We play 2 WR, 2 RB, and a flex. It would leave me with AP, Chris Johnson, Fred Jackson, Tim Hightower at RB. Then Steve Smith (Car), Dez Bryant, Deion Branch, and Antonio Brown as my wideouts.

I can’t see a reason not to do this…unless the whole CJ thing is for real.

      • Brandon 10:49 am on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have to believe that Chris Johnson will improve and he claims that he’s “finally in game shape”…even though I’m pretty sure that’s just him trying to excuse himself for his crappy play in previous weeks. This trade looks pretty good for you too, especially once Dez Bryant is finally healthy. You’ll be stacked at RB and won’t be able to play them all each week though…so sometimes there’s too much of a good thing πŸ™‚ You could always get CJ, wait until he has a good game or two, then spin him off for an awesome receiver like Larry Fitzgerald or Wes Welker or something!

UGH what do i do at WR? Miles austin and cowboys have a bye this week. I have Stevie Johnson at flex, Mike Wallace, And would u pick Erick Decker @ GB, or David Nelson @ CIN to fill in??? Or maybe try to find someone else on waivers???
Also at RB i havent been getting alot of productions out of blount and benjarvus ellis. I also have ben tate on the bench and LT. I think blount has to start even though hes been bad to this point and who else? LT ???

      • Brandon 9:16 pm on September 27, 2011 Permalink | Reply

At wide receiver, you could probably start either Decker or Nelson and get decent stats. Once I put up the rankings for this week I’ll let you know who is the better play. At running back, you might want to start Tate with Blount if it seems that Arian Foster won’t get 100% of the carries. If it looks like Foster is doing alright though and will play, LT is a good risk/reward play. Green-Ellis could start to lose carries to Steven Ridley.

      Brandon,

I need some trade advice. I’m the run away first place team in a money league. It’s PPR 2WR, 2RB, 1Flex but I think I can improve. Problem is I’m terrible at getting trades done. My team looks like this:

      QB – Fitz/Cutler
      WR – Welker/Bowe/Harvin/Thomas/D. Moore
      RB – Rice/McFadden/Forte/Mathews/Benson
      TE – Witten

I’m looking to upgrade at WR2 and have excess depth at RB but am unsure of who to trade. Is it too early to trade Mathews? I have a feeling he’s going to have more value next week after he solidifies his RB1 production. Do you have any suggestions for which RB to trade or which WRs to target?

      Thanks!

      • Brandon 1:38 pm on September 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Regarding Mathews, it depends on how the other guys in the league feel about him. I’m sure if there’s someone who thinks he’ll be great down the stretch, you could package him with Darnarius Moore or Harvin and get a pretty awesome receiver…guys like Fitzgerald or Jennings or Wallace comes to mind. If no one has bought into him yet, you could do the same with Forte and keep Mathews for yourself?

      • Brandon 1:38 pm on September 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Although Forte is a PPR machine usually, so he’s a pretty awesome flex play for your team.

    • Brandon 3:30 am on September 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’m wondering if one of my current WR is worth dropping to pick up Nate Washington; I have Fitzgerald, Bowe, Steve Johnson, Boldin, Harvin, and Denarius Moore.. I was actually thinking about dropping Boldin unless someone tells me that’s a completely dumb idea.. Washington with Britt still in was starting off well this season. While Boldin has been not off so well.. Harvin looks like he’s going to picking up steam and Moore has that lure of explosive potential that makes me want to keep hold of him.. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance..

      • Brandon 1:58 pm on September 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I wouldn’t drop Boldin, since he seems to be doing pretty solid and has been very consistent so far. It’s tough because you have a lot of guys with similar stats. Have you thought of trying to trade a couple of them for an upgrade? Then maybe you could scoop up Nate Washington to replace one? If there are any Percy Harvin believers in your league, maybe you could package him with Denarius Moore or even Boldin and get a guy like Vincent Jackson? Fitzgerald, Stevie Johnson and V-Jax would be pretty nice…with Washington and some others on the bench.

If you don’t do any trades though, it might not be worth making a move right now. Your bench guys are very similar in upside to Washington.

      Trade proposed

Dez Bryant (mine) for Ben Tate (theres)

      non-PPR

2 WR slots (VJax, Colston, Bryant, Henderson, McCluster)
2 RB slots (Foster, Hillis, J Stew, Hardesty, Caddilac)

On paper Foster and Hillis are badass but if they keep not front i’m in trouble!

      What are your thoughts???

      Thanks

      • Brandon 1:48 pm on September 28, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Can you trade Henderson or Colston instead? That way you wouldn’t have to worry about who to start of your Saints receivers πŸ™‚

Otherwise, the trade is good for you in the short term and gives you some insurance for Foster, but in the long term, once Bryant is healthy, your trade partner will get the better end of the deal most likely.

Colston and Foster are back this week- I’m pretty much losing a half decent WR for a handcuff (one would assume Foster will be the starting fantasy option over Tate). I’m hedign myself against a hamstring re aggravation… hmmmm

3-0 this year and now lost Kenny Britt. ….Wondering if there is anything I can or should do to keep this team winning. My team now is…….

Matt Schaub, Larry Fitzgerald, Dez Bryant, Steve Smith (Car), Lance Moore, Jacoby Ford( I just picked up),
Ray Rice, Ahmad Bradshaw, Ryan Mathews, Michael Bush.

Should I stick with what I got? or look for an upgrade? Denarious Moore, Nate Washington, Torrey Smith are already picked up off waivers. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks a lot!!

Looks like you have a decent team there without Britt. Not sure who’s available on free agency in terms of receivers, but if Jacoby Ford (who you just picked up) can start making an impact in the Raiders passing game, he might help you out and you won’t have to worry about it.

      Hey Brandon, I’m 3-0 in one of my leagues, but 1-2 in another which is giving me big headaches as of recent times. The problematic roster consists of;

      QB Tony Romo
      QB Jay Cutler
      WR Santana Moss
      WR Steve Smith
      WR Jeremy Maclin
      RB MJD
      RB Jahvid Best
      TE Fred Davis
      W/R Fred Jackson
      K David Akers
      DEF San Fran
      D Lawrence Timmons

Bench; Arian Foster, Robert Meachem, Reggie Bush, Jared Cook, James Starks, Tedd Ginn Jr., Alex Henery, Carson Palmer

Obviously holding onto Palmer still hasn’t paid off, and with bye weeks coming up, and in a 2 QB, 12 person league, there are literally not even scraps for me to pick up right now. The guy who just snatched up Orlovsky, also has Dalton and Collins on his bench, and is willing to trade for even Dalton, but he expects way too much.

Do you have any advice on what to do for week 4 (perhaps even a smart offer to make) and the upcoming –starting in a week– bye weeks?

      I appreciate your help man.

Have you tried using Pickemfirst (@pickemfirst) on our player rankings for this week yet? If not, give it a try and see if any ranked players are available in your league and might help you out this week!
