Hits & Misses – Week 9: Baseball is finally over!

Now that baseball is finally over, we can focus on the sport that should have a spotlight at this point in the year…football. Before we get to the players though, remember to enter in our contest to win a $50 NFL.com gift card simply by predicting the top fantasy quarterback of the week (my QB “hits” might help you out!) Also, if you’re feeling generous, head over to the Fantasy Football Librarian’s site and vote for FFGeekBlog.com in her first annual Readers’ Choice Poll.

Anyways, that’s enough self-promotion…here are our “Hits” and “Misses” for week nine, listing players you want to make sure are in your lineup, as well as those you might consider shelving for the week (or at least lowering your expectations!) (More …)

Okay, I need some help this week with my WRs and RB positions. I need 3 WRs and 2 RBs and a flex…I have Colston, Smith(nyg), Knox, Collie, and I just picked up Malcolm FLoyd in case he starts to shine…for RBs I have Forte, Portis, R. Williams, Buckhalter and I just picked up Moats, maybe for later…any ideas would be appreciated. If I don’t win this week it isn’t looking good for my team!!! Thanks a bunch

      • Brandon 2:37 pm on November 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

At receiver, I’d go with Colston, Smith and Collie, then use Forte, Portis and Williams as your running backs and flex positions. Good luck!

Hey guys – I’m in 2nd place, but I am hurting at RB – only reliable option I have is DeAngelo Williams. Who should I start (in a non-PPR league) out of: Willie Parker, Ryan Moats, Maurice Morris (I also have Larry Johnson, but he isn’t an option this week or for the rest of the season, lol)

      • Brandon 3:34 pm on November 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’m not a fan of your options there, but if I had to pick one I guess I would go with Ryan Moats and hope he gets a bunch of carries again this weekend. If Slaton fumbles early, you’re golden…otherwise, cross your fingers!

haha how many teams are in your league to have you be in 2nd place with those kind of RB options? — anyone on waivers like a Justin Fargas? that is a scary group to pick from

      • sal 10:37 pm on November 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

i felt the temptation of trading LT and Hightower for DeAngelo and LJ – worst trade I’ve ever made – 12 team league – these guys are hawks on the waiver – that’s the best I can do. Couldn’t even get Jamaal Charles, lol

Hey guys – I’m in a PPR league and I need help making a tough call: do I start Steve Smith (NYG) or Hightower?

      • Brandon 4:58 pm on November 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I guess at this point it’s safest to go with Hightower, as he racks up receptions, receiving yards, gets a few rushing yards and is used for short yardage situations. He’s an anomaly, but he gets it done!

Can i trust starting slaton this week?
my other option is knowshon moreno

      • Amir 5:58 pm on November 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Slaton scares me you might want to wait until closer to game time — they should name a starter by Sunday

      • Brandon 9:46 am on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

You’ll probably want to go with Slaton, but as Amir points out, the closer you can wait till game time to make this decision, the better.. Moreno is still splitting carries with Buckhalter AND they’re playing the Steelers this weekend. I think Slaton will get every chance in the world to play as long as he doesn’t fumble again, so if he keeps the ball safe, he should be in there.

Should I start Mike Wallace, Jeremy Maclin or Steve Smith? Vernon Davis or Brent Celek?

      • Brandon 9:44 am on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Vernon Davis and Steve Smith (either CAR or NYG is fine.)

Brandon- you are offered Forte for Jacobs (with Portis + Turner as your other RBs in a non-PPR league) what do you do?

Some discussion was had but it quickly went away from my context

      • Brandon 9:52 am on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I think I would do this trade at this point. I like Jacobs’ upside more than Forte down the stretch, as he’s been running better than Ahmad Bradshaw lately and I think the team is going to focus a bit more on the running game after their three game skid and inconsistency in the passing game.

      • Mal 10:23 am on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

You would do the trade even though you like Jacobs’ upside more??? I am the one with Jacobs and am being offered Matt Forte? So you mean DON’T do the trade to clarify?? Cheers

Oops! My bad, read that wrong. Do NOT do the trade in that case…hah.

Hines Ward or Mike Sims-Walker for my flex spot? Shockey or Celek?

      • Brandon 10:33 am on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Although he wasn’t great last week, Sims-Walker’s match-up this weekend is too good to pass on. Start MSW. At tight end, go with Shockey, who has been on fire these past few weeks.

Need help – beacause of the bye week, I have Bradshaw, Sproles, and Maroney to plug in. Also could claim Jaamal Charles off waivers. Who should I play to fill the RB2 slot? (Standard League)

      • Brandon 5:04 pm on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I like Ahmad Bradshaw against the Chargers, who haven’t been great at stopping the run. Bradshaw seems to have injury worries every week, but he still manages to play and should have a decent game this week. Good luck!

    • Jojo 3:34 pm on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Who do I start this week?? D. Williams, J. Stewart, P. Thomas, R. Mendenhall (need 2) and @ WR I need 1 more with R. Moss. Housh, Collie, or Mannigham? I know Housh has matchup but that guy is driving me nuts!! (Standard score)

      • Brandon 5:09 pm on November 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

DeAngelo Williams and Pierre Thomas, then I think you have to go with Houshmandzadeh against the Lions, as Manningham has injury/dropped passes/inconsistency issues. Collie is a close second, but I just like Housh’s matchup more.

Brandon- Out of these four who sould i start at WR this week? Miles Austin, Nate Burleson, Mike Sims-Walker, or Hines Ward? Thanks

I like Austin, Burleson and Sims-Walker this week.

While Saints running back Mike Bell’s 143-yard performance this weekend had no impact on any of my match-ups, I felt the need to complain on behalf of all those who were negatively affected by his existence in week one. Doesn’t it just grind your gears to think that a waiver wire, injury fill-in scored more fantasy points than potential first round draft picks Michael Turner, Matt Forte, Steven Jackson, Brandon Jacobs and Chris Johnson? Let’s just hope that Pierre Thomas takes back over when he returns and the fantasy football world can right itself.

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head based on the performance of my fantasy teams (and those that were against me)…

    • Drew Brees is ridiculous. This was one of those match-ups that seemed too good (or bad, if you were playing against him like I was) to be true, but in the end somehow Brees played even better than expected and pretty much won the week for a team that had him playing.
    • With Pierre Thomas out, Reggie Bush ran the ball just seven times. What?
    • After his awful first half performance, Jay Cutler looked 200% better in the second half (besides that last interception!) I was regretting having drafted him for most of the game, but I was able to sleep a bit better after he at least threw one touchdown pass.
    • Devin Hester and Earl Bennett should have solid seasons with Cutler…but what happened to Greg Olsen?!
    • Felix Jones underwhelmed in the first game of the season.
    • Carson Palmer couldn’t throw a touchdown pass against the Broncos?
    • Is Julius Jones that good? Or is St. Louis that bad?
    • Jake Delhomme is making my Steve Smith draft pick look pretty scary right now.
    • While the Jets defense looks solid, the Eagles defense went crazy. (In one of my leagues, my opponent had Philly DEF, Drew Brees and Julius Jones. I lost.)
    • Randy Moss needs to go HUGE tonight so the Patriots can beat T.O. and the Bills…and I can pull off the win in my other league!
    • Matt 1:06 pm on September 14, 2009 Permalink | Reply

St. Louis is still that bad. Julius Jones is officially a “sell high” candidate after just one week.

    • Matt M 1:49 pm on September 14, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Opponent had Brees too. Jake Delhomme cost me wk 1. He can’t make Steve Smith look bad all year right?

      • Brandon 1:55 pm on September 14, 2009 Permalink | Reply

The unfortunate part is that no matter how Delhomme does, he usually still finds a way to get Steve Smith 100 yards and a score. The fact that it didn’t happen yesterday makes me a bit nervous. I’d give them another week before going into panic mode though…just cross your fingers!

10-4 this week for my teams with an all important win in my cash league.

All I can say is that the Eagles defense and John Carlson, both of whom I specifically targeted, can go a long way towards a winning week 😉

Then again so does having Brees, Flacco, AP and Thomas Jones in a keeper league. Too bad they weren’t on my team 🙁

Now to decide what to do with Benson and J. Jones now that they got their one good week of the year out of the way…

        • Brandon 9:28 pm on September 15, 2009 Permalink | Reply

You could try trading Benson and Jones to some unsuspecting team manager in your league…depends on who you play with I guess.

It does not appear that Pierre Thomas will play this weekend, so for all those of you who drafted him, hopefully you have a solid backup (possibly backup Saints RB Mike Bell?) you can plug-in for week one. Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans newspaper, The Times-Picayune, tweets:

Pierre Thomas not dressed for prax. I’d rule him “out” for Sunday. Will get official word later today.

    • Matt 8:57 am on September 10, 2009 Permalink | Reply

      Prax? Who says that?

When Kim Jong Il says Plaxico Burress, I bet he pronounces it “Praxico.”

    • Hopefully managers who drafted Pierre Thomas to be one of their starting running backs had a Plan B for at least week one, as he now has a laceration that required stitches in addition to the knee injury that he’s been suffering from for the past few weeks. Even if he plays, it might not be at the level you are expecting from one of your top draft picks. If he doesn’t play, expect a lot more work for backup Mike Bell and Reggie Bush.
    • While the running back committee in Tampa Bay is sure to cause headaches for fantasy team managers all season, the latest update is that Cadillac Williams, not Derrick Ward, has been named the team’s starter. Pretty amazing stuff considering the injury he is returning from, but apparently they will still rotate all three running backs (Earnest Graham being the other) all season, so good guess on who to start if you have one of these guys on your team.

I’ve got Pierre Thomas, Ronnie Brown, Jamal Lewis, and Mike Bell (insurance). Should I wait and see and start Bell if Thomas does not play? I can’t see playing Jamal against Minnesota this week.

      • Brandon 10:03 am on September 9, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Ken, it’s looking more and more like Pierre Thomas is going to be a game time decision unfortunately, but due to his lingering injury troubles, I’m sure Mike Bell will get at least some of the carries, so he might be worth the risk. If Thomas is ruled out, then by all means start Bell. Early in the year though Jamal Lewis is going to get plenty of carries while the team decides how much to mix in backup James Davis, so it might not be the end of the world if you have to start him and hope that he can break at least one long run or score a touchdown.
