The Wire – Week 16: Championship Week

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week 16. As usual, you’ll find players who are either [Startable], a [Stopgap] to get you past a BYE or injury, [Worth a look] and spot on your bench, or [One-week-wonder]s who don’t warrant a roster spot, so you make your roster moves accordingly. You’ll also see the percent owned in parenthesis. With your league championship in sight, I’ve simplified the list a bit this week, as I figure there is a lot less competition for the top waiver wire players this week. If you have any additional questions though, please feel free to ask away and I’ll try to get them before the end of the day so you can finalize your roster as soon as possible. Good luck!

Out of these 5 players I need to start 1 RB and 1 flex:
Jamaal Charles, Rashard Mendenhall, Joseph Addai, Sidney Rice or Sims-Walker? Also which defense: Arizona or New Orleans?

      • Brandon 3:59 pm on December 22, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Even though he plays a tough Bengals run defense, I think you have to go with Jamaal Charles in the running back spot, as he’s been on fire lately. In the flex spot, I’d go with Sidney Rice, who should put up big numbers on national television (Monday night) against the Bears. As for your defense, I like the Saints at home against Tampa Bay, a team that features a quarterback who single-handedly has 9 turnovers in the past three games.

my lineup for my playoff game is set all down to my last flex spot: the choices are jamaal charles or jerome harrison.
      any suggestions?

      • Brandon 4:02 pm on December 22, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’d start Jamaal Charles based on his consistency. I’ll take two straight 140+ yard and a touchdown games over Harrison’s last two (9 yards, then 286 yards/3 TD) even if Charles has a tougher match-up.

ok I have a huge dilema at my third reciever position. i have pierre garcon, josh cribbs, and michael crabtree. In my head I have made a case for all three players.. garcon has manning throwing, cribbs can take it to the barn, and crabtree is playing detroit… anybody have any suggestiions?

      • Brandon 9:48 am on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Crabtree is the safest play and should have a solid game against the Lions this week. Cribbs is too risky and probably won’t repeat last week’s performance and I’m a little scared of the Colts game plan this week.

Hey guys, wanted your thoughts before leaving for The Nightmare Before Christmas Travel begins. Here’s what I’ve got and some random thoughts (non-ppr):

      RB (2) : Sjax @Ari, Wells vs StL, Charles @ KC, Forsett @GB, F Jackson @ Atl
Have SJax (struggling lately….) and Wells (good matchup) for now, Charles helped get me here but matchup not great @ Cin. Harrison available but too risky, I think.

WR (2): Austin @ Was, Welker vs Jac, Ocho vs KC, SmithNYG vs Car, Sims-Walker @ NE
Austin, and Welker (won last week despite him, Brady still seems banged up) for now. The others may rock….or not.

TE: F Davis, J Finley, Shianco or Witten — I think one of the first two, not sure which one.
D/ST: Have GB in there per your advice, in case you’re having second thoughts: ARI, Cin, Dal, Bal available
K (it’s the money game, kickers count…..I need some FGs!): Hartley, Cundiff, Stover, Scobee, Feely, K Brown, Rackers, Mare.

Thanks for your advice, hope to take the title this weekend. Will be checking in from 5000 miles away assuming my bro-in-law’s internet connection stays strong this week.
      Happy Holidays to All!

        Falcons defense also available…

      • Brandon 10:02 am on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hey TJ, you got some tough decisions at running back, but I can’t argue with Steven Jackson and Beanie Wells. At wide receiver, stick with Welker and Austin, but Ochocinco could also be primed for a solid game. At tight end, I’m not sure how you ended up with all those guys, but roll the dice on Finley, who has the most potential this week out of the crew. At defense, Arizona makes an enticing play and is probably worth a start, especially if Keith Null starts for the Rams again. Finally, at kicker, it’s always a crapshoot, but I like Garrett Hartley. Good luck!

        • TJ 9:21 am on December 26, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Thanks, Brandon. Kept Welker in there now, will stew over Ochocinco a little before game time.

On the te’s only have 2 rostered (Finley & Shiancoe,), but all FAs are pretty safe to grab until tomorrow, hence the choices here. Good Luck to you too!

Hey Brandon, one more question for you – if I chicken out again at the last minute and pull Sjax (actually turned out to be a good move last week), wondering who you’d rank next: F Jackson @ Atl, Charles @ Cin or Harrison (just picked up) vs OAK?

    • Javier 3:05 am on December 23, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Would you start Ganther, Harrison or Morris over Addai as RB#2? How about any of them in the flex spot? My WRs are Randy Moss, SS (NYG), Sid Rice, Meachem and Britt.

      • Brandon 9:44 am on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I would start Jerome Harrison over Addai, just because there is risk that Addai could be benched after a bit to keep him healthy for the playoffs. As for your flex spot, the only change I might consider is Maurice Morris over Kenny Britt.

    • aker 11:24 am on December 23, 2009 Permalink | Reply

You were right that Ganther wasn’t a no-brainer over Bradshaw in MNF. I managed to squeak into the championship game. I have the same dilemma this week, but I’ve added Harrison to the mix. (It should be obvious that I’ve had RB issues all season.) I’m now struggling between Bradshaw who has had back to back strong performances, and the one hit wonder up against Oakland. I think it’s safe to take Ganther off the table as between these three given the matchups?

      • Brandon 9:41 am on December 25, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I know it’s hard to sit Harrison after that insane game last week, but I’d go with Bradshaw this week. He’s got a decent match-up with the Panthers and has been getting the carries in the red zone lately. Good luck!

SO I made it through last wk just barely, and only because my opponent played Brady over Big Ben, but I am here. I am up against a team that I will likely lose against, but I at least want to put up a fight. So I need some help…

Need 3 WRs Colston, Meacham, Smith(nyg), Collie, Evans, Bryant, Avery
Need 2 RBs R. Williams, Forte, Ganther
      TE Celek or Davis
Kicker Feely (i hope what he did last wk was a one time thing)
      DEF San Fran

Also need a flex position out of those listed above. This is a PPR league. Thanks so much for all your help throughout the season!!!! Merry Christmas!

Snelling isn’t startable at home against Buffalo?! Even if Turner plays and Norwood gets some touches, Snelling has done well in the past, and Buffalo is 32nd against the run.

Everyone’s startable depending on the options I guess. Who are your other running backs?

I’ve got Thomas, Addai, Bradshaw and Moreno (went a little nuts on the waiver wire – why not?!) and could get Morris or Bush if I wanted. While Thomas has underproduced, the matchup is too good to let go I think, which is also why I’m looking at Snelling over the others.

Championship week for me and I rode P. Manning to this point but have to sit him. I now have to decide between Garrard and V. Young at QB. Once other thing to take into consideration is that I have Chris Johnson with Tenn. Fearful about Titans getting shut down and losing a lot of valuable points. Either way, over thinking this decision and need clarity.

OK Bradshaw vs carolina or Hightower vs rams. I would normally go for Tim, but with wells in the mix and the threat that Tim won’t play much if they get up big I’m turning towards bradshaw.

Start Bradshaw! Wells as of the last couple of weeks is getting hotter by the week and Hightower took a turn for the worse during the S.F. game. Bradshaw is now showing his explosive hard charging form again. He has come up big lately when given the opportunity and has made the best of it.

The Wire – Week 15: Slim Pickings

Here are our waiver wire candidates for week 15. We’re coming down to crunch-time now, with the playoffs starting/continuing in nearly every league out there at this point, so hopefully you don’t have to rely too much on the players listed here. As usual, good luck to everyone as you try to get one step closer to that league championship!

Made it to playoffs, need some help though, I’m playing Kevin Faulk instead of McCoy as flex, using R.Bush and Maroney at RB. Thought about Meachem in the flex, buy NE plays Buffalo. Got J.Stewart on the bench this week, might have to put Meachem in for Fitzgereld if he is hurt. I have Alex Smith for next week verse the Lions, cause I know Manning won’t really play that last game, if I make it to the next round. What do you guys think?

      • Brandon 10:31 am on December 16, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’m not sure you can justify starting Kevin Faulk over Robert Meachem in the flex spot. If Larry Fitzgerald doesn’t play, I’d put Meachem in the WR slot, then as long as Brian Westbrook doesn’t play, put LeSean McCoy in the flex spot. Kevin Faulk does have a touchdown in the past two games, but that isn’t his strong suit and when the Bills and Patriots played in week one, Faulk had under 60 combine yards.

I’m thinking of starting Meachem over Ochocinco in the playoffs. I have to play 3 WR and my other two are Vincent Jackson and Miles Austin. I also have Steve Breaston on my bench and without LF he could have a nice game. Any suggestions? Ochocinco has underperformed for me so is Meachem a better choice?

        • Brandon 8:26 am on December 17, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah I’m fine with Meachem over Ochocinco. Meachem has a better match-up this week and should have a decent game against Dallas, who just got beat up by the Giants and Chargers receivers in recent weeks.

My QB situation is horrrible. I have David Garrard and Brady Quinn. Which one do I start? Slim picking on the wire. Also who is the better flex play: Addai or Sidney Rice?

      • Brandon 8:23 am on December 17, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Go with Sidney Rice over Addai, who could be benched at half-time if the Colts have a big lead. As for your unfortunate quarterback situation (I can’t believe I’m saying this,) go with Brady Quinn. He has a much better match-up and while the Browns offense has been putrid this season, Quinn has a few decent games as of late. Plus, you won’t have to sit there and agonize over a bad Garrard outing for three days if he puts up a stinker tonight. Good luck!

The waiver wire is unavailable for me in the playoffs and I’m forced to choose between starting Marion Barber and Pierre Thomas going head to head in the same game. Pierre has had better games recently, but Mike Bell is supposed to be back, and New Orleans’ run D is worse than Dallas’.

      • Brandon 8:24 am on December 17, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Neither has scored touchdowns in the running game lately, but the fact that Pierre Thomas is used in the passing game makes him more valuable here.

I’m playing the number one seed in the playoffs this week. This would be a huge win. I need 3WR 2RB and 2 flex.

      Players I have
WR: TO, Smith(NYG), Hakeem Nicks, Antonio Bryant, Dwayne Bowe, Roddy White, Crabtree, Sims-Walker, Chambers
      RB: Pierre Thomas, Ganther, Hightower

Cribbs is also available in my league. I’m most likely playing Ganther after his performance last week. Not to sure about Hightower since he’s been losing carries and having fumble issues of late but he is playing Detroit.

      • Brandon 11:44 am on December 20, 2009 Permalink | Reply

At receiver, I like T.O., Steve Smith and Michael Crabtree. Did you start Pierre Thomas last night? If so, go with Quinton Ganther alongside him. In the flex spots, go with Hakeem Nicks and take a gamble on Roddy White, even if he’s against Darrelle Revis.

Quinton Ganther to start for Redskins

Looks like Quinton Ganther will get first crack at a bad Raiders run defense on Sunday, with Rock Cartwright being demoted to backup status. At this point Ganther makes a decent flex play and possibly RB2 if you’re really struggling, but I’m a little worried that it will end up being a time-share in the Washington backfield when push comes to shove.

Hey guys I have gore and ap but just picked up ganther bc of gores tough matchup and due to the fact that the 49ers are starting to pass the ball more. Should I bench gore and go with ganther on this one?

I’d like to tell you to go out on the limb with Ganther, but without any real track record at all, it’s tough to bench a seasoned veteran who is the unquestioned starter on his team. Stick with Gore and hope the bad Cardinals run defense is out there tomorrow (weeks 8, 10, 12) and not the awesome defense (weeks 2, 6, 9, 13.)

      Brandon,

Looking for a little help decoiding on my last flex position. Here is my WRand RB line up:
      Andre Johnson
      Reggie Wayne
      Wes Welker
      Ray Rice
      Joseph Addai

And with my last spot I am trying to decide between Robert Meachem or Quinton Ganther. Meachem is hot but Brees has so many options, he could easily be overlooked. Ganther is a question mark but his matchup is great and should get at least 15 touches.

      Thoughts?

You have to stick with Meachem. He’s been a touchdown machine for over a month now and there is no reason why the fun has to stop if he’s one of Brees’ favorite targets in the redzone. Ganther is still a question mark as to how effective he’ll actually be.

      Brandon and/or Matt,

Terribly hard decision on final running back spot: Forte, Ganther, K. Smith, or Forsett?

      Thoughs?

Whats you take on these two?

Oak – Quinton Ganther vs Oakland or
NE – Lawrance Maroney vs Carolina

both have good match up’s thats why I’m biting my nails. By the way good luck in you play offs.

Go with Maroney, he’s more of a sure thing. Ganther is a wild card at this point.

Thanks Brandon, I was leaning towards Maroney. I just needed a little push, again good luck.

Sorry we didn’t get to this one Henry, but hopefully you ended up winning!

I’m in a pickle, I have Addai and I know that he may get rested so I picked up Ganther yesterday. Which one should I start. Ganther is actually projected to have a better week but I’m concerned about him not getting many touches and Addai is always very reliable and consistent but I don’t want to play him if he’s only going to play one half of football.

      • Brandon 3:31 pm on December 16, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’d stick with Quinton Ganther. Who knows how much action Addai will see. Usually he would be able to rack up yardage once the team has built up a lead through the passing game, but that might be the exact time that the starters head to the bench. Ganther will be in there all day long.

      Need RB help.

      Starting LT versus the Bengals.

      Need to choose b/w

      Beanie Wells at Det.
      Quinton Ganther vs. NYG
      Laurence Maroney at Buf.

Go with Maroney against the worst run defense in the league.
