The case for Ray Rice as the top fantasy RB

If I had the first pick in a fantasy draft right now – PPR or not – I’d be taking a long, hard look at Ray Rice. Arian Foster, Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson are getting all the top-pick love this year, but why not Rice? He’s only 24, will have newly-acquired Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach blocking for him, and is the centerpiece of a dynamic offense that’s both devoted to the run andย capable of spreading the field thanks to the arm of Joe Flacco and the speed of new teammate Lee Evans.

On top of all that, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron recently announced that Rice will be the team’s goal-line back this year (whereas McGahee used to be the guy in those situations), so what’s not to love? So what if Ricky Williams will steal a few carries here and there? For the first time in his career, Rice is going to get the carries that count the most as far as fantasy is concerned.

Given that Rice has averaged over 70 receptions in his two full seasons as a starter, it’s getting pretty hard to argue against him as the top PPR pick. And with the way his offseason’s gone so far, I’d think twice before using my top pick on someone else in standard formats as well.

If i had a top pick, I would snag Rice, ESPECIALLY with Leach at FB (not McClain). Matt, you’re absolutely right when it comes to a PPR league… He gets to play the Browns and Bengals twice as well… Jeez.

Unfortunately, I’m drafting from the 7-spot and therefore, I have no chance at him. I’m in a PPR league and the mock drafts I’ve participated in always leave me with the following choices:
      – AJ
      – McCoy
      – Roddy White

I’ve convinced myself to pass on Vick, even if he’s available…

      • Matt 4:31 pm on August 15, 2011 Permalink | Reply

The thing with McCoy is that Ronnie Brown scares me. He could turn out to be a major goal line vulture – the Eagles aren’t saying this will be the case (yet), but I’ll be shocked if they let McCoy take the goal-line plunges when they’ve got Brown who’s 20 pounds heavier and frankly more expendable to the team.

I agree wholeheartedly! I won’t know if I have a shot at Rice in either of my leagues until an hour before, but we’ll see.

    • Hawgman 9:56 am on August 16, 2011 Permalink | Reply

If all the experts keep shouting about him, no one with a late round pick will have a shot at Rice. I am picking #7 in a 10 team league. If a couple in front of me grab QB’s I may have a shot, but only if everybody will stop talking about Rice and Leach. SHADDUP ALREADY!!!! ;-D

Deja vu all over again. You guys can keep buying in to this hype, but Leach isn’t going to solve the head coach’s love of spreading the rock around. Rice is behind the top three that you mention (and you forgot JC Superstar), and also behind McCoy, who plays in a pass-first offense.

      • Yenool 10:40 pm on August 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Why is JC so much better than Rice? He still has Thomas Jones in the backfield with him and KC doesn’t seem likely to change that much this season. I only like Charles in PPR leagues for his price.

    • Svinky 2:16 pm on August 21, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I like Rice, especially with Bean(sie) Wells. But I’ll take the Real McCoy.

    • Yenool 10:39 pm on August 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I have Rice 3rd in my standard league rankings. 2nd if CJ doesn’t sign soon. I like Arian top overall, but Peterson is pretty much 11-1300yards and 9+ TDs with that OL I don’t think there’s reason to expect a breakout year from him. So I go Arian, CJ, Rice, AP

Ricky Williams to join Ray Rice in Ravens backfield

It didn’t take long for the Ravens to find a capable backup for their start running back. Ricky Williams will replace Willis McGahee as the change-of-pace tailback and should fit the role nicely. This does very little to temper my excitement over Ray Rice this year though and I really recommend people consider him as their pick in the first round if possible!

    Random fantasy football musings

    Buying

    • Ray Rice should be awesome this year with Willis McGahee out of town and a new fullback leading the way (the same one that led the way for Arian Foster last year!)
    • I’m hearing that Raiders running back Darren McFadden is tearing it up at training camp so far. Michael Bush should still be in town and will take some of his carries, but this is McFadden’s job to lose.
    • With receiver Steve Smith a free agent at the moment who is returning from fairly serious surgery, Giants WR Mario Manningham is someone to look at for your WR3 spot (if he drops that far!) He would probably make a solid WR2 as well.
    • Is it crazy to think Tarvaris Jackson may have a decent season? He’s got Sidney Rice, big Mike Williams, Zach Miller and John Carlson to throw to. I’d prefer Josh Freeman, Matt Cassel or Sam Bradford, but still, someone to consider as a backup QB option if you’re in dire need.

    Up in the air

    • Not yet drinking the Shonn Greene Kool-aid. Rex Ryan claims they’ll feature a heavy dose of Greene, but I think we’ve heard that before. He’s a RB2 at most.
    • Same goes for Beanie Wells. Just because Tim Hightower is out of town, I’m still not ready to believe in him. Jury is still out though and he could end up changing my mind.

    Selling

    • WR Jacoby Ford was one of my big sneaky picks, but his broken hand scares me. He’ll be ready in time for the regular season, but keep an eye on him during the preseason games to see if he gets any playing time.
    • Chris Johnson’s hold out is worrisome. I guess if you get his backup to start the year you might be alright, but I prefer a guy who I know will start from week 1 (e.g. AP, Rice, Charles, etc.) Plus, I had CJ last year and he didn’t light the world on fire enough to demand the top pick this year.
    • I was hoping that people would forget about Jermichael Finley after missing most of last season with an injury, but it doesn’t seem that way. With a lack of top-tier tight ends this year (most of the top guys seem to be fading a bit) Finley could get drafted way above of your price range.

I agree with your comments about Rice, McFadden and Manningham. My only concern with Rice is that he had surgury I believe on his knee during the offseason. Either way I like the addition of a top FB to clear his way.

    • Jake 9:45 pm on August 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I agree with your comments about Beanie. He is a bust this year.

    • Hawgman 10:38 am on August 6, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Every year I draft a RB in the first 2 rounds and every year that RB has a season ending injury within the first 3 games of the season. I would love to have Run-DMC on my roster again this year, but being a life-long Razorback’s fan, I just don’t know if I should curse by boy like that. Maybe I’ll take Ingram – he played for Abalamma…. ;-P

    Week 4 injury updates

What I’m hearing through the fantasy football grapevine…

    • Ray Rice is ACTIVE, but not confirmed that he’s starting. You might consider benching him against a tough Steelers defense if you have a decent alternative.
    • Andre Johnson is ACTIVE – You may still consider an alternative if you have a decent one, considering he’s going up against a solid CB and no one knows how that ankle really feels other than AJ. MORE BAD NEWS!
    • Steven Jackson is ACTIVE
    • Jahvid Best is ACTIVE

    • Jbob 12:45 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I need to replace Thomas, who should I go with John Kuhn, Lawrence Maroney, or Jonathan Stewart, pick 2.

      Thanks!

    • Squish 4:53 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Wow you forgot one. Arian Foster is being benched today because he violated some conduct policy. He’s active, he’s just not going to play. Still can’t find a single report on the internet other than some rumors as to what happened but he’s not playing. Guess the major news streams are at fault for not noticing this one. I should net at least 2 losses because of it…

Also, Andre Johnson was indeed inactive this week.

      • e-roc 6:42 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Correction Squish: Foster just didn’t start. He’s already over the 100+ yd mark with a long TD run.

        • Squish 8:35 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, he saved my fantasy team. Has anyone heard why he was being held out?

Did he get the FFGeekBlog jinx with my post about ranking him over Brady? That’s the risk he takes though being a mobile quarterback unfortunately.

    • Mal 1:58 am on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

So Ochocinco, Ward and Naanee (filling in for Andre) put tgeother a wapping like 80 receiving yards between them. It’s now Tom Brady vs Gronkowski+Green-Ellis tomorrow…..come onnnn Brady!

    • Nero 12:06 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

You are probably already pre-ranking some weekly waiver pickups for this week; however I’m in a league with no waiver wire, so you can pickup/drop on the fly … I got PITT Defense on bye next week, here are my available options, please pick one:

      Buffalo (vs Jax)
      Jacksonville (@ Buffalo)
      Carolina (vs Chicago)
      Washington (vs Green Bay)
      NYG (@ Houston)
      Denver (@ Baltimore)
      St Louis (@ Detroit)
      Detroit (vs St Louis)
      Tampa Bay (@ Cincy)
      ATL (@ Cleveland)
      Cleveland (vs ATL)

Now, I’m gonna keep PITT def and drop Naanee for one of these defenses … who do you think shows up? Suprisingly, St. Louis has given up the least amount of points and are tied with NYG for the most points scored for a defensive unit over the first 4 weeks (41 points); ATL checks in @ third with 34 …

I’m contemplating either Detroit or St Louis – they both generate turnovers; Detroit has 13 sacks (NYG has 16, but a majority of those came last night and they go into houston next week, so nuh uh) … if not St Louis or Detroit, then maybe ATL @ Cleveland? Let me know your thoughts …

      • Brandon 12:15 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

It’s crazy to say it, but I think you might be on to some thing there with the St. Louis defense. They play a Lions offense that is turning the ball over with regularity as well, so if they get lucky they could take an interception back for a score or something.

You might consider Carolina against the Bears as well if Cutler doesn’t start next week (and maybe even if he does?)

        • Nero 12:27 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That’s true Brandon … I was just hoping not to deploy St Louis this week and try either Detroit or ATL … iono bout Carolina (but I agree with you, if Cutler isn’t there, then yea I will consider them … but if he is, I’d rather go with a Detroit or ATL) … only reason I’m saying no to St Louis this week is because Detroit is actually playing some good ball … they are scoring points … they put up some points on GB and they got some take aways @ GB … BUT Detroit has given up 100 points as well … i think I will grab St Louis right now, and wait to hear news on Carolina vs Chicago … so no ATL for sure right?

          • Brandon 1:30 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Atlanta seems decent against the Browns and I’m sure they can get the quarterback (whoever it happens to be) to turn the ball over at least once. Peyton Hillis is running well though and limit the turn overs if they can just feed him the ball.

Injury update: The word floating around the Twitterverse is that Ray Rice and Jahvid Best practiced in full and should be good to go this weekend. Unfortunately though, Andre Johnson, Steven Jackson, Pierre Thomas and Owen Daniels will be most likely be game-time decisions ๐Ÿ™

    • Wolf 8:00 pm on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m lookin at Jacoby Jones on my bench more and more. If Andre and Daniels are out what do you think of his chances?

      My alternatives are:
      D Thomas
      L Moore
      R Williams
      A Hernandez (W/T spot)
      L Naanee
      D McCluster

Yes. My bench is almost all waiver WRs. I scooped up a bunch to possibly find some trades if I need them later on.

      • Brandon 11:52 am on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Hard to get a bearing on Andre Johnson this week, but obviously if he doesn’t play I love Jacoby Jones. I do like Lance Moore as well, who I think sees an increased number of targets with Reggie Bush sidelined again.

    • BillsFan 3:09 pm on October 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I Have Cedric Benson and Payton Hillis in my RB spots.
My problem is i have a flex position that is RB/WR/QB, not sure who is a better play in this position, Pierre Thomas or Sam Bradford. I like Bradfords matchup, and PT’s Knee is psyching me out. I am 0-3 so this is make or break week for me.

      Thanks

Easy one here, with the PT Cruiser OUT this week! Go with Bradford and good luck ๐Ÿ™‚

Trouble for me this week, I have Andre Johnson and Javid Best, my bench options are Mike Tolbert and Lance Moore. Please help!

      • Brandon 11:54 am on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Go with Jahvid Best, who is starting this week. As for Andre Johnson though, that’s a tough one. If you want to be safe, you might start Lance Moore, who should see an increased number of targets with Reggie Bush out. Hard to figure out what’s going on with AJ right now though. Will post if I hear any update on him.
