Terrell Owens finally signs with a team…the Allen Wranglers?

After going the entire 2011-12 season without being offered a contract by an NFL team, Owens has decided to switch gears and will now play for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League. He also becomes part-owner of the team as part of the deal. So for all of you IFL fantasy football league players out there…get your popcorn ready!

Chad Ochocinco (Johnson?) traded to the New England Patriots

As a Patriots fan, I can’t complain that New England isn’t making things interesting this season. In addition to acquiring Albert Haynesworth, they’ve now traded for Chad Ochocinco (not sure if he plans to change his name back now?) and solidify one of the most solid wide receiver corps in the league. As long as Bill Belichick can put up with his social networking, I see this move working out pretty well.

In other news, recently cut wide receiver Roy Williams has signed with the Chicago Bears. Interesting move…which I don’t see working out all that great. He has a decent quarterback with Jay Cutler, but the fact that he couldn’t succeed in Dallas, who doesn’t have a scrub at QB to begin with, raises some serious questions about his skill level at this point.

Anyone know where Terrell Owens is hiding?

Ask the Geeks – Preseason Edition

As the season nears and league drafts are taking place daily throughout the next couple weeks, we figure it’s time to get the Ask the Geeks posts started. We begin with a great question about a couple of reality show stars in Cincinnati:

    JV Prep Squad asks:

Word is TO might get more nods this year than Ochocinco. I’m tempted to place TO higher in my list of wide receivers than Ochocinco. Is this a good move?

Brandon says: While the difference in their average draft positions is starting to decrease (check out where they went in the Yahoo! Friends and Family league draft) due to T.O.’s performance in the preseason so far, you still need to target Ochocinco first. He’s been with the offense for years and has chemistry with quarterback Carson Palmer. I’m guessing that T.O. is seeing a lot of action in the preseason because Palmer is trying to develop this same chemistry with him. Both players will see plenty of targets when the season starts and Owens could provide the distraction to defenses that T.J. Houshmandzadeh did a few years ago…when the man formerly known as Chad Johnson put together some great seasons.

So of course that choice didn’t come up during my draft! I had sixth slot in a 10-person PPR league with flex offense. My team (in order of selection) is:

1-Maurice Jones-Drew (RB) (yes, I got him with the sixth pick
      2-Tom Brady (QB)
      3-Ryan Matthews (RB)
      4-Steve Smith (WR – Carolina)
      5-Matt Forte (RB)
      6-Mike Sims-Walker (WR)
      7-Vernon Davis (TE)
      8-Minnesota (DEF)
      9-Mike Wallace (WR)
      10-Matt Ryan (QB)
      11-Brent Celek (TE)
      12-Mohamed Massaquoi (WR)
      13-Stephen Gostowski (PK)
      14-Tim Hightower (RB)
      15-Kevin Smith (RB)
      16-Dustin Keller (TE)

      Thoughts welcome . . . !

quick question…this week…i need to pick two WR..my choices are Hester, Massaquoi, Patrick Crayton, Berrian, Devry Henderson, or Lee Evans…I’m leaning towards Hester and Evans..i neeeeed a win this week to make the playoffs

      • Brandon 3:13 pm on December 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

You’re in the same boat as me in terms of needing to win to make the playoffs, but luckily I’m not relying on a wide receiver corps like that (no offense, hah.) Did you end up starting Evans? Hopefully not. If you did, I’d gamble on Devin Hester and hope he pulls out a big game against the Rams. If you didn’t play Evans, then put Henderson in there as well.

        • Squish 1:18 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’ve learned one thing about Henderson. He specifically only has big games (3 or more receptions) against teams that have great coverage. Because the coverage is great, Brees is forced to throw the ball his way. I bet he has a huge game against Carolina but little or nothing in the coming weeks with an average performance at Atlanta.

Now I’m all flustered and confused… Mighty Mouse (w/Matt Moore!!) or Donnie Avery (v. bad Bears DEF: 24th PA)… Starting Wayne & Avant….

      • Brandon 3:11 pm on December 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Donnie Avery is probably the safer pick at this point, but I would say that Steve Smith has more upside. Depends on how you’re feeling about your match-up this week 🙂

        • Squish 1:20 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, I gotta go with Avery. Smith will likely see little action since they’ll be able to run at will. Avery has turned into a legitimate WR2 in recent weeks and looks to continue as he gets most of the red zone targets in STL.

I’m going to hate myself more for not starting Smith with Matt Moore in at QB…

        • Brandon 10:52 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hah, unfortunately I have to root for Steve Smith here, as I have him in my line-up in one of my biggest leagues. Let’s just hope both of them have huge games!

Like your analysis, but Revis isn’t a rookie. This is his 3rd season.

      • Squish 12:40 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Well he’s the age of most rookies if that means anything.

      • Brandon 10:20 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hah, thanks for the update. Yeah I realized this after publishing the post and forgot to update it. Not sure why I thought he was a rookie, but either way, he’s been dominant.

So I have a problem…too many skilled players. Please help me pick out my starters? I have 2 WR spots, 1 RB spot, and a RB/WR spot. The players I have are:

      RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Jac RB
      RB Rock Cartwright, Was

      WR Miles Austin, Dal
      WR Mike Sims-Walker, Jac
      WR Jason Avant, Phi
      WR Chad Ochocinco, Cin

I have MJD and Cartwright filling up the RB and RB/WR spots, with Austin and Sims-Walker in my WR spots, but all of them are expected big #s and I don’t know who to play. I’m nervous about Cartwright against New Orleans and I’m nervous about Sims-Walker also, but Ochocinco hasn’t been producing, so I’m confused. Please help.

      • Shane 6:42 pm on December 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Stick with MJD but in the flex i would take Avant over Cartwright. Did you see him last week? He got stuffed at the line 3 times, 8 rushes for 3 of less yard, and none longer than 7. I like Austin and Ochocinco this week. I like Austin because the NYG D has been bad and its a division game. I like Chad because he has been talking about how his team doesn’t throw enough and they are playing Detroit who boasts an atrocious Pass D. Expect Palmer to throw all day.

      • craig 9:51 pm on December 4, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I’d go with Ochociinco and Miles Austin as your two starting receivers, MJD as your starting back, and Jason Avant at the flex spot especially if Desean Jackson doesn’t play after taking that big hit last week. For a whole list of week 13 must starts as well as everything else fantasy football related go to http://www.thefantasyfootballguru.com

        • Squish 1:07 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Gotta agree about the two WRs recommended by the other guys. MJD is a must start as well. As usual though I still like RBs better at the flex spot. Cartwright should have a monster day against an NO defense giving up the 7th most points in the league to opposing RBs. Considering he’s the only guy left on the squad at RB and that he’s had two solid games against rush defenses as the starter, I would consider him a low end RB2 in most leagues this week.

I do agree that Avant is a very solid start if DJ is out but I’d take Cartwright otherwise and personally would take him either way.

Quick one: Looks like Julius Jones is (supposedly) healthy and will start Sunday, possibly hurting Forsett’s numbers. I can play J Charles instead – hard to predict which Denver RunD will show up, but Charles might also have decent receiving numbers. Which one, you think, assuming Jones is “healthy”?

      • Squish 1:26 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I like Charles better for upside. He has been hot recently. You can expect 100 rushing yards at least but he may not get in the endzone since Denver’s red zone run defense is 9th in the league. I like to think they’ll utilize him as scat back this week too so expect some receiving numbers. Plus, there’s always that chance that he’ll take a return to the house!

      • Brandon 10:33 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Agree with Squish here, go with Charles.

Forsett “Strained” his quad during practice today.
Jones is a safe bet now because Forsett isn’t 100%

      • Ken 3:03 pm on December 5, 2009 Permalink | Reply

i wouldn’t call JJ a safe bet. He hasn’t done much as a starter. And Forsett said he sat out as a precaution in practice. Its still possible that Forsett splits carries with Jones on sunday.

As a Forsett owner this all pisses me off. At this point Id rather not have to rely on either back.

I’d def play J Charles if I had him as an option. Him and Forsett are very similar backs and both have the possibility to make points as a receiver if the run game isn’t there…or even if it is lol. They’re great for PPR leagues

        • TJ 1:58 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Thanks guys – now do you think Steven Jackson will play tomorrow? Cold Chicago may not help his back, unlike last week. I may need to use Forsett after all if SJax is inactive…..

        • Brandon 10:32 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Steven Jackson is expected to play and should put up solid points against a mediocre-at-best Bears defense. Keep him in your line-up.

Need QB Help! Trying to trade for Favre. Who should I trade? My players include:
      QB Cutler
      RB D. Will
      J Stew
      P.Thomas
      R.Mendenhall
      WR: R. Moss
      TJ Housh
      B. edwards
      M. Manningham
      J. Avant
      TE: Celek
      K: Bironas
      D: DAL
      CIN

      • Squish 1:29 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Try to package Housh/Edwards and Pierre Thomas for Favre and a low end WR. What does the other player have that you could target in the area of WRs?

Any thoughts for a flex spot between these guys?

      Chris Brown
      Jason Snelling
      Devin Hester
      Steve Breaston
      Chris Chambers

      • Squish 1:32 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I like Chambers this week out of that group. Snelling is my next choice since I have a hunch he’ll get a majority of the carries this week with Atlanta. Hester, Breaston and Brown just aren’t viable options at this point.

      • Brandon 10:31 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I have to disagree with Squish here and actually like Chris Brown today. Looks like Steve Slaton is out and Brown should get the bulk of the carries against the Jaguars.

    • Matt 4:05 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

If Steven Jackson can’t go, I need one of the following for my RB2:
      1. C. Brown @ JAC
      2. J. Forsett vs. SF
      3. J. Norwood vs. PHI

      I also need a WR3:
      1. M. Colston @ WAS
      2. J. Avant @ ATL
      3. D. Hester vs. STL

Also, between these two for a defense:
      1. New Orleans @ WAS
      2. Denver @ KC

      • Brandon 10:24 am on December 6, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I actually like Chris Brown at running back with Steve Slaton out this week. At wide receiver, Avant is a great play with DeSean Jackson out as well and finally, for your defense, I like the Saints this week. I think they’ll force Jason Campbell to make some bad throws and could end up with some solid points off interceptions.
