The Wire: Jackie goes to Battle for your team (except next week)

This season I’ve continued to tweak the format of the waiver wire list, so pay attention! I’ve organized it by position now, since that probably makes more sense when you’re trying to fill a particular position. In terms of the color coding, green is guys to target, yellow is guys to wait on (except in deeper leagues) and red is one-hit-wonders.

Here is the waiver wire advice for this week in Google Doc spreadsheet format if that’s the way you prefer to digest it.

Remember, Pickemfirst is a great browser plug-in to use with our waiver wire lists! Anyways, another running back has a breakout week, only to go on a BYE the following week. Always confuses people…

Which of these WRs to drop for Cruz: Washington, JNelson, A Brown (return yards league – Brown has averaged 12 PTs/game here). I’m leaning Jordy, he’s great but the inconsistency is killing me.

      • Brandon 1:56 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Of the group, it seems that Nelson has become the most inconsistent, but his upside is also higher than the other two most weeks. Cruz on the other hand has huge upside and his consistency is starting to show itself as he has taken over the WR2 gig from Mario Manningham. If you don’t start him, you might drop Nate Washington who will continue to compete with Jared Cook, more carries for Chris Johnson and second year WR Damian Williams.

Thanks, Brandon. Any opinions on a D/St of the week – return yards count (1 per 10 kick return, per 20 punt return yards – making even NE a decent D in our league…). Here’s whats out there: Min (@Chi), CIN (vs Indy), Hou (no Mario, @ BAL), Buf @NYG, NE vs Dal, OAK (vsCLE), ATL (vs Car), Mia.

Quick one Percy Harvin or DHB?? Also, If you had to bench two who would you choose; Branch, J Nelson, Holmes, Colston , Wayne, and the winner of the first question?

I need help…pick two to start….Ryan Grant, Crabtree, Dallas Clark, Kendall Hunter, Massaquoi….I have some byes, and some injuries to flex position.

    • Neil 1:12 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Who do you think I should drop to get Moore (QB-MIA). Tarvaris has a bye and I need a fill-in. Torrey Smith (WR), James Casey (RB/TE), Eric Decker (WR – BYE), Jordy Nelson (WR), Mario Manningham (WR), Nate Burleson (WR). The spots with a Bye this week for me are 1QB and 1W/T.

      • Brandon 1:57 pm on October 10, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Ditch James Casey. The guy had one fluky big game and hasn’t done squat in any other week.

I’m in a 12-team, standard league; we start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, and 1 RB/WR/TE. Would you consider any QBs mentioned above as an upgrade over Cutler as backup QB? Also, I have Foster, Felix J, Best, Ridley, and Ben Tate at RB, and Fitzgerald, Mike Williams (TB), Harvin, and Manningham at WR. I’m defintely looking to drop Tate for someone, and am considering dropping one of my unproductive WRs as well. What would you do in my shoes? I’m 1-4 in my league, so I’d appreciate any advice you may have… Thanks!!

P.S. I should mention the names who are available as free agents at this time; QB – Painter, Tebow, Alex Smith, Dalton; RB – Jackie Battle, Delone Carter, Bernard Scott; WR – Heyward-Bey, Doug Baldwin, Steve Breaston, Malcom Floyd, Greg Little. Also, because we don’t have a waiver wire process (we have a free-for-all free agency period staring at 9PM on Tues) I have to be focused and prioritized regarding any moves I make… Thanks again!

      • Brandon 9:42 am on October 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Who is your starting quarterback? If you want a gamble with relatively high upside, go for Tim Tebow (as long as he’s named the starter.) He’ll rack up the rushing yards and get some rushing TD’s in addition to his passing stats. At running back, grab Battle over Tate and possibly Baldwin/Heyward-Bey/Breaston over Manningham…although that’s not a huge upgrade anyways.

        • Randy 10:10 am on October 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Thanks, my starting QB is Romo, so I’m not sure if my backup should be someone with lower risk/reward in case Romo gets injured (since his bye was week 5), or someone with high upside in case I want to insert him on a matchup basis. I feel like “on paper”, my roster is decent, but my WRs in particular are all being shut down it seems…

I’m also curious if you like Jared Cook over Fred Davis at a backup TE. My starter is Vernon Davis… Thanks again!

          • Brandon 1:46 pm on October 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

They’re both going to be fairly inconsistent, but in the short term I like Cook over Davis. If Davis returns from the BYE with a bang though then maybe I switch my allegiances. 🙂

I just got this offer: he gives me Ingram and Stafford, I give him Jahvid Best and Michael Bush. On the surface it seems like a great deal. I have Matt Ryan and no backup, and I still have Chris Johnson, Mcgahee, Benson, Addai, and Torain. He has Brees so he’s not worried about losing Stafford. Should I push for a better trade or jump on it?

Most all the experts say start Bryant over Cruz since they’re playing NE Patriots, worst pass defense in the league. Here’s my concern……Miles Austin is back. Jason Witten is playing as well, thoughts???

Just to confirm, if I need to drop one of my WRs in the near future to open up spots elsewhere, would Manningham be the one to sacrifice? And what do you think of Greg Little’s and Mark Clayton’s prospects (once Clayton returns in a week or two)? Thanks again!

      Hey Brandon,

Think it’s worth swapping in Antonio Brown, J Nelson or Cruz for any of these: Washington, D Nelson, D Moore, or Holmes (who I may never start again?).

Also – who would you rather keep : Ridley or Ingram?

      Thanks

      • Brandon 4:37 pm on October 4, 2011 Permalink | Reply

What do you mean by swapping in? Picking up off the waiver wire or just starting them this week?

Waivers – currently have Ingram & Best on bench, need to play one to cover wk 5 bye

Brown, J-Nel & Cruz still out on waivers. Didn’t move fast enough to grab Decker. Leaning towards dropping Nelson…. what do you think?

          • Schrodinger's Cat 5:09 am on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Don’t drop J. Nordy. I would definately pick up Nate Washingtor and maybe drop Victor Cruz for him. Denarius Moore still hasn’t put up big enough number to make drops for him yet.

            • TJ 9:54 am on October 5, 2011 Permalink

My current WRs: Megatron, Washington, Holmes, D Moore, & Antonio Brown. Start 2, STD scoring, but counts return yards, so Brown is averaging around 14pts/game here.

So drop D Moore for Jordy ?

            • Schrodinger's Cat 3:24 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink

I think what you have now is good. I wouldn’t drop Denarius yet. Jordy is a great pick up but he splits targets with Jennings and Finley. So as far as week 5 goes.. I’d keep what you have and maybe pickup Nelson later.

      • Brandon 3:41 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’d scoop up Jordy Nelson and Victor Cruz at the expense of David Nelson and Denarius Moore. There’s always going to be these low level WR’s on free agency and when they have a big game, they’ll get scooped up 🙂 I like Nelson and Cruz’s upsides more than the others at the moment though.

      I have:
      RB:S.Jackson F.Jones M.Ingram B.Tate B.Scott
      WR: W.Welker S.Johnson E.Decker S.Rice P.Harvin L.Hawkins
      TE: T.Gonzalez
      D/ST: Lions Bears
      K: J.Hanson

      • Brandon 3:26 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

What should you give up? Depends on what the other people need I guess. If you could get it, nearly every player on your team would be good one-for-one except Wes Welker. Steven Jackson probably isn’t worth giving up as he is nearly equal to Blount and Jackson. Maybe there is still an Ingram believer who you can package him with Percy Harvin or something for? You may have to improve it though. Decker and Felix Jones is probably something the other guys would consider, but I’d aim for Fred Jackson with that one.

SHOULD I DROP MYSELF AND PICK UP RIDLEY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR??

      • Brandon 3:23 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I haven’t fully hitched my wagon to the Stevan Ridley wagon quite yet, but if you can pick him up without dropping Tim Hightower that would be ideal. Both backs will likely end up in some type of rotation where they have to make the most out of limited carries, but Hightower is only behind Ryan Torain, a guy who has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. Ridley will split carries with BJGE all year.

      Need HELP.

I’m 0-4 in my league and feeling like I should make some drastic changes. I thought I had a pretty good lineup, but I keep losing by narrow margins.

      Here’s my lineup:
Philip Rivers, Tony Romo, MJD, Stephen Jackson, Darren Sproles (flex), Jordy Nelson, Brandon Lloyd, Mike Thomas, Owen Daniels.
BENCH- Joe Flacco, Johnny Knox, Fred Davis, Plaxico Burress, James Starks

I’m thinking I need to trade Joe Flacco for a decent (better) WR or RB. Any thoughts? What would be a fair trade?

      • Brandon 3:33 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Not sure exactly what kind of upgrade you’ll get for Flacco at this point unless you have some Ravens fans in your league. That looks like a pretty decent team you have and not sure how you’re 0-4! Maybe you can make some kind package with Flacco/Starks/Nelson or something to upgrade RB or WR. Just keep in mind that you’ll want a backup QB that doesn’t share a bye week with your two guys so you have someone to plug in.

Anyone have any advice on what to do from here? Guy said he would give me Dalton for Best, and i do really need a QB…

      • Brandon 3:37 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

All you need is a guy to fill in for your bye weeks right? There aren’t any starters available in free agency? You probably don’t even play Best though, so if you really need a QB I guess there are worse options out there than Dalton…just not that many 🙂

        • Jake 3:41 pm on October 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, all i need is to fill out two bye weeks…I was offered Sanchez too from someone else (for FJax), but his bye is the same as my second QB, so it would be useless trading for one bye week for him.

There are no starters left as free agents, even the back-ups for back-ups are scooped up instantly. You are ABSOLUTELY right though, I will rarely start Best now unless there are injuries or byes, so…your advice was GREATLY appreciated my good sir.

I am stacked at WR (Wallace, Nicks, S Smith(car), Stevie J, and one of the above, but very thin at RB (Moreno is my only backup to Rice and Mathews.) I have been trying to work trades hard but my league is scared to deal and I don’t get emails back from anyone.

Want to target Daniel Thomas for depth as he is still available, but hate dropping either of those guys, but I think I have to with Byes approaching.

      • Brandon 9:07 pm on September 27, 2011 Permalink | Reply

yeah it’d be worth dropping either of them for Daniel Thomas to beef up your running back depth. I guess I’d drop Lance Moore, as he’s less consistent and once Marques Colston is back could lose some looks. Santana Moss has been the definition of consistency so far this year and there’s no reason to think he’ll fall off.

The Wire – Week 1: I told you to draft Aaron Hernandez

I feel like the format of the weekly waiver wire posts change every year…so here we go again! Here’s my waiver wire advice for week one of the 2011-12 NFL season, in Google Doc spreadsheet form, so it can easily be updated behind the scenes without the post being edited. Here’s the link to the spreadsheet if you’re trying to view on a mobile device and it’s hard to read.

The list shows the players, along with the percentage owned in Yahoo, so you know who will most likely be a free agent and who might already be owned. As usual, I’ll only include players that are 80% or less owned in leagues, as I assume those with a higher ownership are only available in public leagues that no one cares about. Those in green are the players you should be targeting first, with the yellow guys being those that I’m less excited about. Forget about the players in red, as they’re one-hit-wonders for the most part.

Just a note, I was really high on Aaron Hernandez this year, as was apparent by all my spamblogging about him during the preseason. Just let it be known! (More …)

If you plan on starting him in the next couple weeks, I’d go with Henderson. Burleson might have more value over the entire season, but Devery Henderson is going to get a lot of looks while Marques Colston is out.

Oops, that’s my bad. As for who to play this week, you could almost flip a coin. If I wasn’t a Patriots fan, I might go with Graham though, especially if Lance Moore is out again. With Marques Colston already out, Graham will get more looks. If you pick up Devery Henderson and start him though, you might not want to put all your eggs in the Saints passing-game basket and spread the risk by playing Hernandez.

      Darren Sproles
      Mike Tolbert
      Ahmad Bradshaw

Also, who would you go with Jacoby Jones, Jordy Nelson, or Santana Moss?

If you’re asking me who I think the top three out of those running backs are I’d go Ahmad Bradshaw, Mike Tolbert and Reggie Bush. Why can’t you hang on to the other guys though? As for your wide receivers, Santana Moss is the guy I’d stick with. Is this a keeper league with some late draft date or something?

It’s a weekly match-up league and I’ve got Kenny Britt, Jordy Nelson, and Santana Moss as my WR’s and Plaxico Burress as my BN WR.
Then I have Reggie Bush, Ahmad Bradshaw, Green-Ellis, and Tolbert. I just don’t know which two to use this week and which to BN this week.

Also, which should be my main DEF? Washington, Arizona, or Houston?

Would you pick up Sproles over Ingram?

      • Brandon 9:40 am on September 14, 2011 Permalink | Reply

No, give Ingram a chance. Sproles will be erratic, while Ingram should get more consistent and score more touchdowns in the long run.

Are you giving up Forte or Vick? Who are your other running backs and quarterbacks?

The Wire – Week 16 pick-ups: Good luck in the Championship!

Not a whole lot to say here regarding waiver wire pick-ups. At this point, if you’re relying on the waiver wire to carry you to victory, you’re in serious trouble. However, maybe you just need to upgrade one minor spot to give you that tiny edge you need to advance to the next round. As always, we’ve included the percentage owned (taken from Yahoo.) Take a look and see if any of these guys can help patch your squad together and carry you to the Promised Land…
