Week 4 FAIL – Injuries start piling up

Continuing with a new post for this season, here are a few players who just didn’t quite live up to expectations this week. Were they over-rated to begin with? Did they just have a bad game? Were they benched because their team was dominating (or getting dominated?) It’s probably just a one week mishap, but if they land on this list a couple weeks in a row, you might start worrying! Anyways, feel free to add to the discussion with your own. Maybe someone that you blame this week’s loss on?

This week’s list could almost double as a weekly injury wrap-up, with a few players status in question right up to game time (Ray Rice & Andre Johnson,) then the entire passing game of the Eagles going out the window due to one ill-advised Mike Vick rushing attempt. These injuries no doubt hurt more than one of you out there. Anyways, here’s the list of this week’s failures. Enjoy!

Helpful post. Can I suggest you add two more columns: Cause for Failure (injury/benching/etc) and Weeks on List

      Thanks!!

Marques Colston has been a bust so far … I know he can tear it up at any moment, but he definitely has been a bust. He should be on the list

      • Brandon 2:47 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

If there was a season long FAIL post then I’d agree, but he’s already lowered my expectations to the point where his 30-60 yards aren’t all that unexpected…

        • Squish 3:41 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Agreed. I didn’t expect Colston to be an elite WR this year. The Saints spread the ball around too much to have any reliable fantasy options. Sometimes the best teams are no better than the worst for fantasy value.

Glad to hear. Those are almost the best wins sometimes, since you know a player like Maclin won’t put up a goose egg all that often. Like when you win your match-up with the second to lowest score, because you played the guy with the worst score, hah.

    Week 4 injury updates

What I’m hearing through the fantasy football grapevine…

    • Ray Rice is ACTIVE, but not confirmed that he’s starting. You might consider benching him against a tough Steelers defense if you have a decent alternative.
    • Andre Johnson is ACTIVE – You may still consider an alternative if you have a decent one, considering he’s going up against a solid CB and no one knows how that ankle really feels other than AJ. MORE BAD NEWS!
    • Steven Jackson is ACTIVE
    • Jahvid Best is ACTIVE

    • Jbob 12:45 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I need to replace Thomas, who should I go with John Kuhn, Lawrence Maroney, or Jonathan Stewart, pick 2.

      Thanks!

    • Squish 4:53 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Wow you forgot one. Arian Foster is being benched today because he violated some conduct policy. He’s active, he’s just not going to play. Still can’t find a single report on the internet other than some rumors as to what happened but he’s not playing. Guess the major news streams are at fault for not noticing this one. I should net at least 2 losses because of it…

Also, Andre Johnson was indeed inactive this week.

      • e-roc 6:42 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Correction Squish: Foster just didn’t start. He’s already over the 100+ yd mark with a long TD run.

So Ochocinco, Ward and Naanee (filling in for Andre) put tgeother a wapping like 80 receiving yards between them. It’s now Tom Brady vs Gronkowski+Green-Ellis tomorrow…..come onnnn Brady!

    • Nero 12:06 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

You are probably already pre-ranking some weekly waiver pickups for this week; however I’m in a league with no waiver wire, so you can pickup/drop on the fly … I got PITT Defense on bye next week, here are my available options, please pick one:

      Buffalo (vs Jax)
      Jacksonville (@ Buffalo)
      Carolina (vs Chicago)
      Washington (vs Green Bay)
      NYG (@ Houston)
      Denver (@ Baltimore)
      St Louis (@ Detroit)
      Detroit (vs St Louis)
      Tampa Bay (@ Cincy)
      ATL (@ Cleveland)
      Cleveland (vs ATL)

Now, I’m gonna keep PITT def and drop Naanee for one of these defenses … who do you think shows up? Suprisingly, St. Louis has given up the least amount of points and are tied with NYG for the most points scored for a defensive unit over the first 4 weeks (41 points); ATL checks in @ third with 34 …

I’m contemplating either Detroit or St Louis – they both generate turnovers; Detroit has 13 sacks (NYG has 16, but a majority of those came last night and they go into houston next week, so nuh uh) … if not St Louis or Detroit, then maybe ATL @ Cleveland? Let me know your thoughts …

      • Brandon 12:15 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

It’s crazy to say it, but I think you might be on to some thing there with the St. Louis defense. They play a Lions offense that is turning the ball over with regularity as well, so if they get lucky they could take an interception back for a score or something.

You might consider Carolina against the Bears as well if Cutler doesn’t start next week (and maybe even if he does?)

        • Nero 12:27 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That’s true Brandon … I was just hoping not to deploy St Louis this week and try either Detroit or ATL … iono bout Carolina (but I agree with you, if Cutler isn’t there, then yea I will consider them … but if he is, I’d rather go with a Detroit or ATL) … only reason I’m saying no to St Louis this week is because Detroit is actually playing some good ball … they are scoring points … they put up some points on GB and they got some take aways @ GB … BUT Detroit has given up 100 points as well … i think I will grab St Louis right now, and wait to hear news on Carolina vs Chicago … so no ATL for sure right?

          • Brandon 1:30 pm on October 4, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Atlanta seems decent against the Browns and I’m sure they can get the quarterback (whoever it happens to be) to turn the ball over at least once. Peyton Hillis is running well though and limit the turn overs if they can just feed him the ball.

Injury update: The word floating around the Twitterverse is that Ray Rice and Jahvid Best practiced in full and should be good to go this weekend. Unfortunately though, Andre Johnson, Steven Jackson, Pierre Thomas and Owen Daniels will be most likely be game-time decisions 🙁

    • Wolf 8:00 pm on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m lookin at Jacoby Jones on my bench more and more. If Andre and Daniels are out what do you think of his chances?

      My alternatives are:
      D Thomas
      L Moore
      R Williams
      A Hernandez (W/T spot)
      L Naanee
      D McCluster

Yes. My bench is almost all waiver WRs. I scooped up a bunch to possibly find some trades if I need them later on.

Hard to get a bearing on Andre Johnson this week, but obviously if he doesn’t play I love Jacoby Jones. I do like Lance Moore as well, who I think sees an increased number of targets with Reggie Bush sidelined again.

Go with Jahvid Best, who is starting this week. As for Andre Johnson though, that’s a tough one. If you want to be safe, you might start Lance Moore, who should see an increased number of targets with Reggie Bush out. Hard to figure out what’s going on with AJ right now though. Will post if I hear any update on him.

User Requested Player Ranks – Week 4

As I’ve mentioned previously, this year we’re trying something a little different when it comes to player rankings. We’re letting our readers decide which players show up on the lists. This means less work for me (or at least spreads out the work) while ensuring that all requested players show up on the lists and all quandaries are resolved. Hopefully last weeks rankings helped at least a few teams out there win their match-ups and hopefully this week’s do the same!

Remember, if you have any Flex slot questions, continue to post those as comments and we can respond to them individually. Anyways, feel free to start posting your line-up questions, along with any questions/comments about this new format. As usual, I’ve added some of the players from my own teams to get things started. For a permalink to the rankings for the week, view the Google Docs spreadsheet here.

Interesting. I was torn between Thomas and Mcfadden, and was going to go w/ Thomas based on the D they were up against, but might reconsider now (MJD being the third option, but too difficult to bench him).

As for WRs, I was thinking about benching either Calvin or Santana for Mark Clayton (difference being on the road against better Ds, or at home). Once again this makes things more difficult!

He’s moved down a few spots over the past week or two and if he can’t put up some decent numbers against the Colts porous run defense, then it might be time to start considering others ahead of him.

      Hello-

I am being offered M. Forte, A. Bradshaw, and J. Knox for R. Wayne. To give you an idea of what I’m working with, my team consists of Vick, S. Jackson, P. Thomas, B. Green-Ellis, J. Snelling, Ken Darby, A. Boldin, B. Lloyd, lee Evans, Roy Williams, C. Cooley, and Flacco. Do you think the trade is worth it?

      • Brandon 3:31 pm on September 29, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Forte, Bradshaw + Knox for Reggie Wayne? I think you have to do this trade, given your current team.

First, it would give you some decent options at running back this weekend (and in the future) with S-Jax and PT possibly out this weekend. Second, your WR would still be solid with Boldin, Knox and Lloyd.

You could then probably package up some of the excess RB depth and trade it for a decent alternate WR. I’d almost even say you could wait for Steven Jackson to have a decent game, then trade him for the best receiver you can get.

I would keep Brown. He’s getting more involved in the offense each week and who knows when Addai will get knocked out for a game or two. Green-Ellis is just the RB of the week for the Patriots. Who knows if he’ll even be the primary ball carrier this week (he probably will, but you know what I’m saying.) If Kuhn has a good game this week though, I could change my tune…

      • Brandon 1:23 pm on September 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Just added Turner. As for Boldin, he gets props because A) the Steelers pass defense is around the middle of the pack so far this season in terms of yards allowed and B) because it could be worse if they played teams with better passing games. The one marque receiver they played against so far was Roddy White, who had 111 yards. As for Rice, he’s high up the list because of the key role he plays in his team offense, but also because there are some great running backs that haven’t been added to the list yet 🙂 If I add a few more top tier guys, you may see his rank fall.

Still no definitive word on the PT Cruiser. The latest news though is that Ladell Betts, not Christopher Ivory, would start if Thomas can’t go. Don’t waist a pick up on Ivory. However, you should definitely drop Woodhead for Percy Harvin if possible!

Nicks, Jennings, as you mentioned, and for the third one I’d gamble on Joseph Addai. I like his match-up with the Jaguars, with the Colts expected to go up a score or two early, they could start running the ball for once (I know, a novel idea!) I have Clayton and Knox listed at basically the exact same spot on my rankings, so you could flip a coin on them if you’re not digging Addai this week.

Ha! Sucky thing is that I have to use at least one of em! This could possible ruin my winning steak!! 🙁

Where would a “healthy” Ryan Mathews fall on this list?

      • Brandon 9:01 am on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Added him with an “injury worries” note, but it appears he’ll be playing. The Cardinals are terrible against the run and Mathews could have a great game if he stays healthy the entire time 🙂

Please add Chargers & Falcons DSTs, and Donald Driver. Thank you.

Oh never mind, just saw it. Brain lapse.

You should see them all on there now

      Z. Miller, B. Gradkowski, D.Thomas, Crabtree

      • Brandon 9:13 am on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Added them. Gradkowski is playing against the worst pass defense in the league and might be forced to throw early and often, so he could end up surprising this weekend.

So, I’ve got MJD, Ronnie Brown, Moreno(who is out for the week), and Green-Ellis. I’m for sure starting MJD. With Green-Ellis not incredibly established, and Ronnie Brown being somewhat inconsistent thus far(and now reportedly having a bit of a hamstring issue), I’m not sure who to start. So, Brown, or Green-Ellis? Whattaya think, Brandon?

      • Brandon 12:23 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Go with Ronnie Brown. Not sold on Green-Ellis at this point, even as a Pats fan 🙂

      Mind adding:

      -Gore
      -Bengals

      thanks

Added Gore and Cincinnati was on there. I like Gore this week (and most weeks!) Good luck

So according to this, you would play Jahvid Best over John Kuhn? I’ve heard Best is doing better with his injury, so now I’m trying to weigh the players themselves against the defenses they’re facing (Kuhn has an easier matchup).

      • Brandon 12:09 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Kuhn is still a backup on a pass-first team, while Best is starting. Go with Best.

Concerned with R. Mathews and A. Johnson situation..and my back up options are less than. Do I go Tolbert and do I dare sit Johnson?? Injury and going against great CB. D.Thomas and Crabtree are my options unless I go to the waiver??

      • Brandon 12:12 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Keep Mathews and AJ in there with those alternatives.

      • Brandon 12:29 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Uh oh, latest tweet by Adam Schefter not looking good for AJ. Throw Demaryius Thomas in there instead if you can’t risk the goose egg!

Can you add Garrard and Kevin Walter.

      • Brandon 12:11 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Added them. I like Walter, hate Garrard.

And for a flex spot who do you like, Mark Clayton or Vernon Davis?

          • Brandon 12:20 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Clayton. Still worried about the 49ers offense until they show something.

Whats your reasoning to play Seattle D over
      the Jets D?

      • Brandon 12:45 pm on October 3, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Chance of big play in kick return game, as well as Steven Jackson’s injury possibly turning the Rams in to a one dimensional team. If Bradford throws enough, there will have to be chances for turnovers. Jets may keep Bills in check, but odds of big plays could be a bit less.
