Week 5 FAIL – Houston, we have a problem

Continuing with a new post for this season, here are a few players who just didn’t quite live up to expectations this week. Were they over-rated to begin with? Did they just have a bad game? Were they benched because their team was dominating (or getting dominated?) It’s probably just a one week mishap, but if they land on this list a couple weeks in a row, you might start worrying! Anyways, feel free to add to the discussion with your own. Maybe someone that you blame this week’s loss on?

This week’s list is headlined by a couple of Houston Texans big timers, along with the one and only, Peyton Manning! Anyways, here’s the list of this week’s failures. Enjoy πŸ™‚

Note: In case you’re interested, I made a new, master list of FAILs for the season, so check it out!

Good trade. The only sketchy part is Foster for Rice – that one could go either way.
But yeah, take that sh*t and run with it.

      • Squish 3:17 am on October 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’d make this trade every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Foster’s balloon is beginning to pop and Ray Rice has been underachieving. Wayne is an upgrade at WR over Royal and gives you 3 studs at the most inconsistent position. Ryan for Roethlisberger is a slight downgrade at QB but only temporarily. I expect Big Ben to be just as good as Ryan once he shakes the rust off.

Ha, my friend ended up backing out.

With my team, would you trade Matt Ryan and Eddie Royal for Hakeem Nicks, Alex Smith, and Kevin Kolb?

As an owner of both rice and foster i would make this trade… matty-ice is pretty close to big ben in terms of qb1 value and wayne is a huge upgrade over eddie royal as a clear cut top 5 wr.. As far as foster and rice go its pretty close but after seeing rice punch in two goal line tds and a schedule that only gets easier down the stretch (minus pit) I would pull the trigger

        • Brandon 9:08 am on October 13, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Not sure that trade is all that great. Can you trade Colston/Ryan for Nicks (and one or both of those trashy QB’s)? I love Hakeem Nicks, but also think Eddie Royal will be solid this year and you’re giving up one of your top QB’s for some guys who may not even be starting in a few weeks.

The guy I’m playing this week is in desperate need of a Wide Receiver, as he has none benched and Ochocinco is on bye. He has Ryan Mathews, and I would like to trade for him as I think he’ll improve considerable over the next few weeks. I was thinking of trading Brandon Jackson and Lance Moore for him. Is that too much? Too little?

        I appreciate your help.

        • Brandon 12:17 pm on October 14, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I think that is a fair trade. Lance Moore is so inconsistent and Reggie Bush should return, stealing some of his value as well. Mathews should be much better than Jackson when the dust settles.

Hey guys, I’m looking for a bit of defensive advice. I drafted Baltimore’s defense which hasn’t performed very well for fantasy purposes. I’m thinking about dropping them and streaming from here on out. Does that sound reasonable?

The defenses out there in my league include TEN, ATL, DET, NE and KC. Any thoughts on which to pick up or should I just hang onto BAL?

      • matt 12:21 am on October 13, 2010 Permalink | Reply

hang onto BAL, they will come around and ed reed is due back soon

        • J 2:07 am on October 13, 2010 Permalink | Reply

TEN, KC, and NE are all worth it… Especially KC or NE.

      • Brandon 9:11 am on October 13, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I like Tennessee and Atlanta this week. If your league awards return yards as part of the DEF/ST unit (only one person I know has a league like that) then NE and KC are also solid. I’m worried about New England though. They got VERY lucky last game with the blocked kicks and some interceptions, but besides that one game, they haven’t been all that great. Brandon Tate helps with his kick returns, but I don’t see that happening every week. I use the “streaming” approach in all my leagues though, so I can’t tell you not to do it πŸ™‚

        • Squish 12:26 am on October 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I actually had Bernard Scott on my roster still and don’t think he’ll get picked back up so I went after the SD defense who just got dropped today. That being said would you rather play SD or BAL defense this week? I’m leaning SD.

          • Brandon 10:44 am on October 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Go with San Diego. Baltimore is actually one of the worst scoring defenses for fantasy at this point…which seems odd. In one of my leagues, it’s the 3rd worst defense! On the other hand, San Diego is the fourth best. Plus, the Ravens are playing the Patriots, who are sure to put up points and hopefully won’t turn the ball over (go Pats!)

I almost wish LeSean McCoy were ruled out for Sunday since I wouldn’t have this dilemma. I’m sure it’s the same for every McCoy owner.

I need to start 2 RB + 2 flex that I want to use for RB as well (I’ve got some depth)

Clearly, I’m starting Turner and Arian Foster

Next, I need to choose 2 between Bradshaw, Torain and McCoy.

User Requested Player Ranks – Week 5

As I’ve mentioned previously, this year we’re trying something a little different when it comes to player rankings. We’re letting our readers decide which players show up on the lists. This means less work for me (or at least spreads out the work) while ensuring that all requested players show up on the lists and all quandaries are resolved. Hopefully last weeks rankings helped at least a few teams out there win their match-ups and hopefully this week’s do the same!

Remember, if you have any Flex slot questions, continue to post those as comments and we can respond to them individually. Anyways, feel free to start posting your line-up questions, along with any questions/comments about this new format. This week I’ve kicked off the lists with the top five players at each position. For a permalink to the rankings for the week, view the Google Docs spreadsheet here.

I’d roll the dice with Kevin Kolb. Orton has been the best by far this year, but he plays against an awesome Ravens defense IN Baltimore. As long as Kolb stays in the full game, he should put up some solid numbers.

Just because I have a player ranked high doesn’t automatically mean I predict a huge game from them, just that I like their chances more than whoever happens to be on the list at the moment a bit less.

Got them on there. I think Maclin does alright this week as long as Kolb can stay in for the entire game (or if Vick comes back and starts the whole game…which would be surprising.) It’s the games where the starter gets hurt that Maclin and DeSean Jackson have had difficulty with.

Can you explain why a commissioner would reject the following trade:

      Marques Colston + Ryan Mathews

      Calvin Johnson + BenJarvus Green-Ellis

      Doesn’t seem fair to me!

      • Brandon 8:46 am on October 8, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Not sure why the commissioner would reject the trade. At first glance it seems that the CJ/BJGE guy is getting ripped off, but if Colston doesn’t pick it up and Green-Ellis stays the primary back in NE, it’s not that lopsided of a deal. The commish shouldn’t be intervening unless he thinks there’s some conspiring going on between teams to make a super team or something. Is that the case? πŸ™‚

        • Aaron Dhiman 6:12 pm on October 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Right. Commish said CJ had more points than Colston and Mathews combined, and he wouldn’t take into account the fact that Mathews was hurt for a couple of games. We worked out the trade by substituting Steve Smith (Giants) for Colston, which is basically all the same to me.

Yeah, sometimes the Commish gets too active!

They’re all basically splitting carries, but I’d go with Ladell Betts. He’s healthy and should see more action in the Saints passing game over his partner in crime (Chris Ivory.) Wells/Hightower are going to get shut down as the defense won’t even give quarterback Max Hall the time of the day. LeSean McCoy’s fractured rib worries me, so I’d keep him on the bench. Good luck!

Flex Question: Need to start one Betts or Harvin?

      Thanks.

Hmm, I guess Ladell Betts is the safer play, but I like Harvin as higher risk, but much higher reward!

In the long run, would it be worth it to drop Hines Ward in exchange for Pierre Garcon?

      • Andy 6:30 pm on October 9, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Or Donald Driver for Pierre? Or neither?

        • Brandon 11:54 am on October 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I wouldn’t drop either of those guys for Garcon until Pierre strings together a couple solid games first.

Last minute question. Mcnabb or favre?

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to answer this one. Was out doing yardwork. Who’d you end up starting?

The Wire – Week 5 pick-ups: Another crop of back-up running backs

Here are your potential waiver wire pick-ups for week 5. If you’re a Tom Brady owner, I seriously recommend that you consider Sam Bradford as your quarterback this week, as he has a great match-up with the Lions. Other players of intrigue this week include Ryan Torain, Mike Tolbert, Davone Bess, and Brandon Pettigrew, so take a look and see if any of these guys can help your squad overcome some injuries and bye weeks…

Brandon, I’m absolutely devastated with my second WR (14-team league) – anyways, I currently have Steve Johnson starting, but I’m doubting that. I got Murphy on the bench (not sure if he’ll play against SD) …. so on the waiver wire, we’ve got Naanee (umm I dropped him, so no way), Mike Thomas, or Danny Amendola …

I think Thomas and Amendola have great matchups, but should I drop Steve Johnson for one of them, and which one?

      • Brandon 4:35 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Hmm, not sure those guys are all that much of upgrades over Johnson. They’re all guys who will catch 3-6 passes, but Johnson apparently knows how to find the endzone. Don’t bother with Naanee though…that guys a fluke until he has another big game!

      Time to add Lynch! πŸ™‚

      • Nero 3:51 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yup … someone dropped him in my league the other night and I immediately picked him up. It’s a league where there is no waiver wire, so that was a good move. I also got Spiller on my bench, so maybe he will see some upside as well …

By the way, as per my previous question above, Mike Thomas just got picked up by someone, but the person who picked him up dropped MSW … both Jags receivers (funny) … so who should I pick up now?

        • Brandon 4:36 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Not sure I’d bother with Sims-Walker either. Stick with Steve Johnson for now…even if he is a Buffalo Bill.

Cool, that is what I was thinking. Oh, but one more thing – I just noticed that Laurent Robinson might be ready to return for the Rams; should I pick him up?

      • Brandon 4:31 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

He’s already there! Time to update his Notes though. However, I’m not sure I’m diggin’ his new digs. The Seahawks offense is pathetic for the most part.

If you had the opportunity to drop either Dwayne Bowe or Kevin Walter for Brandon Tate, would you do it? Which one would you drop (and why)?

      • Brandon 3:29 pm on October 6, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Was just looking at Dwayne Bowe’s stats and was surprised at how terrible he was doing this year. I’d almost say to drop Bowe for Tate, but given that Bowe is the first option in an offense that doesn’t have many other options in the passing game, you might hang on to him for another week or so and see if he gets more involved.

Teams on a bye during week 5: Miami, New England, Pittsburgh, Seattle. Adjust your rosters accordingly!

Which defense is the best moving forward – KC, Titans, San Fran or Minn? Someone dropped Minn. in my league but the schedule looks tough.

      • Brandon 4:28 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I actually like Kansas City…but AFTER they play against Indy this week. Tennessee has been the best so far out of the group though.

The Saints D was let go. What do u think of them?
And I just picked up Torain and someone in my league offered me Sims-Walker for him. Good move? My WR are A.Johnson, J. Maclin, S. Holmes, D. Thomas and Crabtree. RBs are Bradshaw, Tolbert, Mathews, Caddy and now Torain.

          • Brandon 3:32 pm on October 6, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Keep Torain. MSW hasn’t done much of anything this year and it seems that Clinton Portis will be out for 4-6 weeks, meaning Torain should see plenty of carries.
