FFGeekBlog League of Champions draft results

As with the keeper league that Matt and I are in, I figured we should show off our newly drafted teams and let everyone vote on who ended up with the better squad (hopefully the results are better this time!)

Note: This league is NOT a PPR league, in case that affects your vote.

Sorry, looks like I’m in the minority here, but Matt won by default. A BU TE AND Def Brandon? Really?

What’s a “BU TE and Def”? Boston University? 🙂

        Or “big upside”?

      • Brandon 8:39 am on August 31, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Ohhh….backup. hah, my bad! I’m high on Owen Daniels and Aaron Hernandez this year, so had to grab both. As for the backup defense, I might drop one, but there wasn’t a lot of better options when it came to the last pick of the draft.

Didn’t mean for a decoder ring to be required on that one.

Brandon – can you explain Vincent Jackson in the 2nd round? That one really baffled me.

    • Mike 8:58 am on August 31, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Its a tuff decision actually and I would have picked a tie I think if that was an option. How Ryan Mathews went in the 7th round is beyond me. Good teams guys.

      • Brandon 9:06 am on August 31, 2011 Permalink | Reply

My thought was that Mike Tolbert was scaring people away from drafting Mathews, but he went even later, hah. I was about to draft Tolbert in round 7 if I remember correctly, but he went just before my pick so I grabbed Owen Daniels. The Chargers offense should be solid this year, so I assume everyone that can stay healthy should have a good year.

I think the main point I based my vote on is that it’s keeper… that makes Brandon my choice

    FFGeekBlog Keeper League draft results

Last night Matt and I took part in our annual keeper league draft and you can see the teams we ended up with below. So who made out the best? You can see the keepers with the small “k” next to them. The league is 0.5 PPR, in case that matters to you.

Interestingly, Matt and I play each other in the first week of the season, so we should know the answer pretty soon!

oh nm, I didn’t notice the “K” next to him

yeah his 12th round pick looks pretty nice next to my 12th round pick 🙂

I think Josh Freeman may be the sleeper QB this year. You may get the better end of this Brandon!

            • Brandon 10:25 am on August 24, 2011 Permalink

That’s what I was hoping, but that game against the Patriots scared me where they made him look like a rookie again. Maybe he’s still shaking off the rust?

            • Yenool 10:32 pm on August 26, 2011 Permalink

Freeman shouldn’t be a keeper though. You really didn’t have any other options? He’s a fringe top 12 QB this year in that system. You obviously have the adv in WR while Matt has the RB adv. So the scale tips in Matt’s favor based on QB.

19-13? It was all tied up earlier today! Was Matt’s draft really that much better than mine?!

    • Matt 1:22 pm on August 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

The thing I’m happiest about with this draft is that paying attention to the PPR factor netted me three really valuable RBs. Rice, Hillis and Forte ranked 3rd, 4th and 8th among all RBs in receptions last season.

      • Brandon 1:55 pm on August 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Looks like the people have spoken…and they love your draft, ya bastard. Oh well, we’ll see what really happens come week 1! I like my team for PPR as well, with some solid WR and pass catching RB’s.

        • Matt 3:42 pm on August 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

As well they should. When your starting lineup in a PPR league includes Vick, Ray Rice and Peyton Hillis, that’s reason to feel pretty good.

    • Brandon 1:35 pm on September 30, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Hmm, at this point in the year my team (43 votes) is 3-0 and Matt’s (64 votes) is 0-3.

My Yahoo public league team (note: make sure to check league settings!)

public league team 2011A few nights ago I signed up for my annual Yahoo public league team, which I always do ahead of my official leagues for A) practice and B) because I get antsy and want to stare at a fantasy football team. Anyways, I signed up for a 10 team league, thinking it was probably going to be pretty close to standard Yahoo scoring rules. One thing I noticed up front was that it was a two defense league, which seemed a little odd, but I didn’t think twice about it really.

Anyways, when I got to the draft, picks 2-4 were quarterbacks! I was pick number 5 and was excited to draft Ray Rice there, but then I started wondering why all the QBs were drafted so early. I looked at the scoring settings for the league and realized that the scoring is weighted towards them. When the draft came back to me though in the second round, all the top tier quarterbacks were gone, so I didn’t want to waste a pick and ended up going with Larry Fitzgerald.

I then started wondering about the two defense thing, especially when a top defense was taken in the 5th or 6th round. Looking at the scoring from last year, the defenses are pretty much the most important position in the league! You can see the scoring in the image below.

I’ve already made a couple moves, since there are no waiver rules (another thing to check!) picking up DeAngelo Williams in return for Thomas Jones and changing my defenses around a bit. Pretty solid looking team though, don’t you think? If scoring was normal, this team would be pretty dominant, but with the way the league is set up I can only hope it works out 🙂

yeah I joined the same league and I did all the same, realized way late. My Team is BloRun&Gun, You were the guy I was swearing at who took Tomlinson late.. Yeah I was wondering why defense was going so fast. I didn’t draft a defense until about round 7. As far as normal league standards this was the first time I drafted smart for RB and WR. With that said its because everyone else was gobbling up QB’s. Oh well it will be interesting to see how this league pans out.

      • Brandon 4:08 pm on August 19, 2011 Permalink | Reply

hah, it will indeed be interesting. keep in mind that there are currently no waiver rules, so you have to closely monitor the transactions. that’s why I got deAngelo Williams so easily. not a bad 4th or 5th RB 🙂

I always read a bunch of draft strategy articles before we draft (in late August), and most of them say one of the main keys to winning is knowing the league rules.
That does look like a pretty good team…Good Luck B!

      • Brandon 7:01 pm on August 23, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Thanks man. I think it should do alright. Seems like a lot of the guys in the league know eachother, so maybe it’s a conspiracy against the new guys!

I just had my yahoo draft yesterday, and I’m not quite happy with the results:

      Q Sam Bradford
      W Reggie Wayne
      W Marques Colston
      W Brandon Marshall
      R Jamaal Charles
      R Steven Jackson
      T Mercedes Lewis
      w/r/t Tolbert
      K Henery
      DST Patriots

      B Crabtree
      B Floyd
      B Hightower
      B Snelling
      B Breaston

I focused a bit too much on rounding up my WR corps, which had given me trouble in the past. I picked Tolbert way too high, (r4 or 5 I think) to get him into my flex spot, when he is not even the main man in SD. I should have gone for an elite QB at that time (Vick went as #2 overall pick and then Rodgers during the 1st round as well), Ryan was still available 🙁

Just signed up for a Yahoo! Public league that drafts tonight, since for some reason I had forgot to sign up for my one annual public league (must have been the lockout.) Anyways, I’ll let people know of the results tomorrow, but I’m hoping for a badass team!

Are they recommending we also catch the bug? Or dislocate our fingers? Hmm…
